| 1 David passò in rassegna la gente che era con lui e costituì capi di mille e capi di cento. | 1 Then David mustered the men who were with him, and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. |
| 2 David poi divise in tre parti l’esercito, affidandone un terzo a Joab, un terzo ad Abishai figlio di Zeruia e fratello di Joab, un terzo a Ittai il Gattita. Il re disse alla gente. «Ho stabilito di uscire anch’io con voi». | 2 And David sent forth the army, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the men, "I myself will also go out with you." |
| 3 Ma la gente rispose: «Non uscirai! Perché se dovessimo darci alla fuga, nessuno farebbe attenzione a noi; se morisse una metà di noi, nessuno farebbe attenzione a noi: ma tu sei come diecimila di noi. Ora dunque è meglio che tu resti per esserci di aiuto dalla città». | 3 But the men said, "You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore it is better that you send us help from the city." |
| 4 Il re rispose loro: «Farò ciò che pare bene ai vostri occhi». Il re allora si pose di fianco alla porta e, mentre tutta la truppa usciva cento per cento e mille per mille, | 4 The king said to them, "Whatever seems best to you I will do." So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands. |
| 5 diede quest’ordine a Joab, ad Abishai e a Ittai: «Con dolcezza per me verso il giovane Assalonne!» Tutta la truppa udì l’ordine del re a tutti i capi nei riguardi di Assalonne. | 5 And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom. |
| 6 La truppa uscì in campagna contro Israele e fu data battaglia nella foresta di Efraim. | 6 So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim. |
| 7 Ivi l’esercito di Israele ebbe la peggio di fronte ai servitori di David e fu grande la strage quel giorno: ventimila uomini. | 7 And the men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men. |
| 8 Là si estese la battaglia sulla superficie di tutta la regione; la foresta divorò più gente di quanta non ne divorò la spada in quel giorno. | 8 The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword. |
| 9 Ora Assalonne venne a trovarsi di fronte ai servitori di David. Assalonne montava su un mulo e il mulo entrò sotto il folto di un enorme terebinto; la testa gli rimase fortemente impigliata nel terebinto ed egli si trovò sospeso tra cielo e terra poiché il mulo, che gli era sotto, era passato oltre. | 9 And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. |
| 10 Lo vide un uomo e lo annunciò a Joab: «Ecco, ho visto Assalonne appeso a un terebinto!» | 10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, "Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak." |
| 11 Disse Joab all’uomo che gli annunciava ciò:«Ecco, lo hai visto e perché non lo hai colpito là sul posto? Affar mio il darti dieci sicli d’argento e una cintura!», | 11 Joab said to the man who told him, "What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a girdle." |
| 12 Rispose l’uomo a Joab: «Quand’anche mi sentissi gravare sulle palme mille sicli d’argento, non stenderei la mano contro il figlio del re, perché con le nostre orecchie abbiamo udito quanto il re ordinò a te, ad Abishai e a Ittai: “Abbiate riguardo per il giovane Assalonne!”. | 12 But the man said to Joab, "Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake protect the young man Absalom.' |
| 13 Se invece io avessi compiuto sotto la mia responsabilità qualche perfidia, siccome nulla rimane celato al re, ti saresti messo contro di me». | 13 On the other hand, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof." |
| 14 Disse Joab: «Non altrettanto intendo starmene inattivo innanzi a te». Prese in mano tre dardi e li confisse nel cuore di Assalonne. E, poiché egli era ancora vivo nel folto del terebinto, | 14 Joab said, "I will not waste time like this with you." And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive in the oak. |
| 15 si avvicinarono dieci giovani scudieri di Joab, colpirono Assalonne e lo finirono. | 15 And ten young men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him, and killed him. |
| 16 Joab allora fece suonare la tromba affinché la truppa desistesse dall’inseguimento di Israele, perché Joab volle risparmiare il popolo. | 16 Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel; for Joab restrained them. |
| 17 Preso poi Assalonne, lo gettarono nel bosco stesso, in una grande buca, e sopra di lui innalzarono un mucchio di pietre assai grande. Intanto gli Israeliti erano fuggiti ciascuno alla propria tenda. | 17 And they took Absalom, and threw him into a great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones; and all Israel fled every one to his own home. |
| 18 Ora Assalonne si era innalzato, ancora vivo, la stele che si trova nella valle del Re, poiché si era detto: «Figli non ne ho: sia per memoria del mio nome». Impose alla stele il suo nome: così è chiamata cippo d’Assalonne fino a oggi. | 18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar which is in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to keep my name in remembrance"; he called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom's monument to this day. |
| 19 Ora Akhimaaz, figlio di Zadok, disse: «Voglio correre a portare al re la lieta notizia che Jahvè gli ha reso giustizia contro i suoi nemici». | 19 Then said Ahima-az the son of Zadok, "Let me run, and carry tidings to the king that the LORD has delivered him from the power of his enemies." |
| 20 Gli rispose Joab: «Non saresti uomo di buone notizie in questo giorno: porterai dunque un altro giorno la buona notizia; oggi non porteresti una buona notizia per il fatto che è morto il figlio del re». | 20 And Joab said to him, "You are not to carry tidings today; you may carry tidings another day, but today you shall carry no tidings, because the king's son is dead." |
| 21 Joab disse a un Chushita: «Va’, riferisci al re ciò che hai visto». Il Chushita si prostrò innanzi a Joab e corse. | 21 Then Joab said to the Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed before Joab, and ran. |
| 22 Ma Akhimaaz, figlio di Zadok, tornò a dire a Joab: «Avvenga ciò che vuole, voglio correre anchio dietro il Chushita!» Joab rispose: «Perché proprio vuoi correre, figlio mio! Se anche tu vai, nulla ti darà la buona notizia». | 22 Then Ahima-az the son of Zadok said again to Joab, "Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite." And Joab said, "Why will you run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the tidings?" |
| 23 Rispose Akhimaaz: «Avvenga ciò che vuole, io corro». Allora Joab gli disse: «Corri». Akhimaaz si diede a correre per la via del Chiccar e oltrepassò il Chushita. | 23 "Come what may," he said, "I will run." So he said to him, "Run." Then Ahima-az ran by the way of the plain, and outran the Cushite. |
| 24 David stava tra le due porte. La sentinella che era andata sul terrazzo della porta al disopra del muro, levò gli occhi e vide: ed ecco un uomo correva solo. | 24 Now David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and when he lifted up his eyes and looked, he saw a man running alone. |
| 25 La sentinella diede un grido e avvertì il re. Il re disse: «Se è solo, una buona notizia è sulla sua bocca». Mentre quegli andava man mano avvicinandosi, | 25 And the watchman called out and told the king. And the king said, "If he is alone, there are tidings in his mouth." And he came apace, and drew near. |
| 26 la sentinella vide un altro uomo correre e gridò al custode dicendo: «Ecco, un altro uomo corre solo». Il re disse: «Anche costui porta buone notizie». | 26 And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gate and said, "See, another man running alone!" The king said, "He also brings tidings." |
| 27 La sentinella aggiunse: «Vedo il modo di correre del primo: sembra il modo di correre di Akhimaaz, glio di Zadok». Disse il re: «È uomo dabbene colui: viene per una lieta notizia». : | 27 And the watchman said, "I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahima-az the son of Zadok." And the king said, "He is a good man, and comes with good tidings." |
| 28 Akhimaaz si avvicinò e disse al re: «Pacel» e si prostrò di fronte al re faccia a terra. Poi aggiunse: «Benedetto Jahvè tuo Dio, che ha tolto ogni scampo agli uomini che avevano levato la mano contro il mio signore re». | 28 Then Ahima-az cried out to the king, "All is well." And he bowed before the king with his face to the earth, and said, "Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who raised their hand against my lord the king." |
| 29 Il re disse: «Nulla di male al giovane, ad Assalonne?» Rispose Akhimaaz: «Ho veduto una grande moltitudine quando Joab spedì un servitore del re e me, tuo servitore: ma non so di che cosa si trattasse». | 29 And the king said, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" Ahima-az answered, "When Joab sent your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I do not know what it was." |
| 30 Il re disse: «Scostati e fermati là». Si fece da parte ritto in piedi. | 30 And the king said, "Turn aside, and stand here." So he turned aside, and stood still. |
| 31 Ed ecco il Chushita giunse e disse: «Il mio signore re ode la buona notizia: perché Jahvè ti ha fatto giustizia oggi liberandoti dalla mano di tutti coloro che sono insorti contro di te». | 31 And behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, "Good tidings for my lord the king! For the LORD has delivered you this day from the power of all who rose up against you." |
| 32 Disse il re al Chushita: «Nulla di male al giovane, ad Assalonne?» Il Chushita rispose: «Siano come il giovane i nemici del mio signore re e tutti coloro che insorgeranno contro di te con cattiva intenzione!» | 32 The king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" And the Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil, be like that young man." |
| 33 And the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!" |
