1 Da antwortete Zofar von Naama und sprach:	1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:
2 Soll dieser Wortschwall ohne Antwort bleiben und soll der Maulheld Recht behalten?	2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?
3 Dein Geschwätz lässt Männer schweigen, du darfst spotten, ohne dass einer dich beschämt.	3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?
4 Du sagtest: Rein ist meine Lehre und lauter war ich stets in deinen Augen.	4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?
5 O, dass Gott doch selber spräche, seine Lippen öffnete gegen dich.	5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,
6 Er würde dich der Weisheit Tiefen lehren, dass sie wie Wunder sind für den klugen Verstand. Wisse, dass Gott dich zur Rechenschaft zieht in deiner Schuld.	6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.
7 Die Tiefen Gottes willst du finden, bis zur Vollkommenheit des Allmächtigen vordringen?	7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?
8 Höher als der Himmel ist sie, was machst du da? Tiefer als die Unterwelt, was kannst du wissen?	8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?
9 Länger als die Erde ist ihr Maß, breiter ist sie als das Meer.	9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.
10 Wenn er daherfährt und gefangen nimmt, wenn er zusammentreibt, wer hält ihn ab?	10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?
11 Denn er kennt die falschen Leute, sieht das Unrecht und nimmt es wahr.	11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?
12 Kommt denn ein Hohlkopf zur Besinnung, wird ein Wildesel als ein Mensch geboren?	12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?
13 Wenn du selbst dein Herz in Ordnung bringst und deine Hände zu ihm ausbreitest -	13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,
14 wenn Unrecht klebt an deiner Hand, entfern es und lass nicht Schlechtigkeit in deinem Zelte wohnen! -,	14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,
15 dann kannst du makellos deine Augen erheben, fest stehst du da und brauchst dich nicht zu fürchten.	15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.
16 Dann wirst du auch das Ungemach vergessen, du denkst daran wie an Wasser, das verlief.	16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.
17 Heller als der Mittag erhebt sich dann dein Leben, die Dunkelheit wird wie der Morgen sein.	17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,
18 Du fühlst dich sicher, weil noch Hoffnung ist; geborgen bist du, du kannst in Ruhe schlafen.	18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,
19 Du kannst dich lagern, ohne dass jemand dich schreckt, und viele mühen sich um deine Gunst.	19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,
20 Doch der Frevler Augen verschmachten, jede Zuflucht schwindet ihnen; ihr Hoffen ist, das Leben auszuhauchen.	20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.
