NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples he moved on from there to teach and preachin their towns.
Ioannes autem, cum audisset in vinculis opera Christi, mittens per discipulossuos2 Now John had heard in prison what Christ was doing and he sent his disciples to ask him,
ait illi: “ Tu es qui venturus es, an alium exspectamus? ”.3 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?'
Etrespondens Iesus ait illis: “ Euntes renuntiate Ioanni, quae auditis etvidetis:4 Jesus answered, 'Go back and tel John what you hear and see;
caeci vident et claudi ambulant, leprosi mundantur et surdi audiuntet mortui resurgunt et pauperes evangelizantur;5 the blind see again, and the lame walk, those suffering from virulent skin-diseases are cleansed, andthe deaf hear, the dead are raised to life and the good news is proclaimed to the poor;
et beatus est, qui non fueritscandalizatus in me ”.6 and blessed is anyone who does not find me a cause of falling.'
Illis autem abeuntibus, coepit Iesus dicere ad turbasde Ioanne: “ Quid existis in desertum videre? Arundinem vento agitatam?7 As the men were leaving, Jesus began to talk to the people about John, 'What did you go out into thedesert to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No?
Sedquid existis videre? Hominem mollibus vestitum? Then what did you go out to see? A man wearing fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothes areto be found in palaces.
Sed quid existis videre? Prophetam? Etiam, dico vobis,et plus quam prophetam.
Then what did you go out for? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet:
Hic est, de quo scriptum est:
"Ecce ego mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam,
qui praeparabit viam tuam ante te".
he is the one of whom scripture says: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you toprepare your way before you.
Amen dico vobis: Non surrexit inter natos mulierum maior Ioanne Baptista; quiautem minor est in regno caelorum, maior est illo.11 'In truth I tel you, of al the children born to women, there has never been anyone greater than Johnthe Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.
A diebus autem IoannisBaptistae usque nunc regnum caelorum vim patitur, et violenti rapiunt illud.12 Since John the Baptist came, up to this present time, the kingdom of Heaven has been subjected toviolence and the violent are taking it by storm.
Omnes enim Prophetae et Lex usque ad Ioannem prophetaverunt;13 Because it was towards John that al the prophecies of the prophets and of the Law were leading;
et si vultisrecipere, ipse est Elias, qui venturus est.14 and he, if you wil believe me, is the Elijah who was to return.
Qui habet aures, audiat.
Anyone who has ears should listen!
Cui autem similem aestimabo generationem istam? Similis est pueris sedentibusin foro, qui clamantes coaequalibus16 'What comparison can I find for this generation? It is like children shouting to each other as they sit inthe market place:
dicunt:
“Cecinimus vobis, et non saltastis;
lamentavimus, et non planxistis”.
We played the pipes for you, and you wouldn't dance; we sang dirges, and you wouldn't bemourners.
For John came, neither eating nor drinking, and they say, "He is possessed."
venit Filius hominis manducans et bibens, et dicunt: “Ecce homovorax et potator vini, publicanorum amicus et peccatorum!”. Et iustificata estsapientia ab operibus suis ”.
The Son of man came, eating and drinking, and they say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend oftax col ectors and sinners." Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.'
Tunc coepit exprobrare civitatibus, in quibus factae sunt plurimae virtuteseius, quia non egissent paenitentiam:20 Then he began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked, because theyrefused to repent.
“ Vae tibi, Chorazin! Vae tibi,Bethsaida! Quia si in Tyro et Sidone factae essent virtutes, quae factae sunt invobis, olim in cilicio et cinere paenitentiam egissent.21 'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done inTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
Verumtamen dicovobis: Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in die iudicii quam vobis.22 Stil , I tel you that it wil be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on Judgement Day than for you.
Et tu,Capharnaum, numquid usque in caelum exaltaberis? Usque in infernum descendes! And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised as high as heaven? You shal be flung down tohell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet.
Verumtamen dico vobis: Terrae Sodomorum remissius erit indie iudicii quam tibi ”.
Stil , I tel you that it wil be more bearable for Sodom on Judgement Day than for you.'
In illo tempore respondens Iesus dixit: “ Confiteor tibi, Pater, Dominecaeli et terrae, quia abscondisti haec a sapientibus et prudentibus et revelastiea parvulis.25 At that time Jesus exclaimed, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding thesethings from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children.
Ita, Pater, quoniam sic fuit placitum ante te.26 Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do.
Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father,just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
Venite ad me, omnes, qui laboratis et onerati estis, et ego reficiam vos.28 'Come to me, al you who labour and are overburdened, and I wil give you rest.
Tollite iugum meum super vos et discite a me, quia mitis sum et humilis corde,et invenietis requiem animabus vestris.29 Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you wil find rest foryour souls.
Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.'
