1 Or di lì a due giorni era la pasqua, e gli azzimi: e i principi de' sacerdoti, e gli Scribi cercavano il modo di prenderlo per inganno, e ucciderlo.	1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.
2 Ma dicevano: Non il dì di festa, perché il popolo non si levi a tumulto.	2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'
3 E trovandosi Gesù a Befania in casa di Simone il lebbroso, ed essendo a mensa: venne una donna, che aveva un alabastro d'unguento di nardo di spigo di gran pregio, e rotto l'alabastro, glielo sparse sulla testa.	3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.
4 Ed eranvi alcuni, che ciò soffrivano di mal cuore dentro di se, e dicevano: A che fine si è fatto questo scialacquamento d'unguento?	4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?
5 Imperocché potea questo vendersi più di trecento denari, e darsi a' poveri. E fremevano contro di lei.	5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.
6 Ma Gesù disse: Lasciatela stare: perché la inquietate voi? Ella ha fatto una buona opera verso di me.	6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.
7 Imperocché avete sempre con voi de' poveri, e potete far loro del bene, quando a voi piacerà: me poi non mi avete sempre.	7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.
8 Ella ha fatto quel, che poteva: ha anticipato a ungere il mio corpo per la sepoltura.	8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.
9 In verità vi dico: In qualunque luogo sarà predicato questo Vangelo pel mondo tutto, sarà ancor raccontato quel, che ella ha fatto in sua ricordanza.	9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'
10 E Giuda Iscariote uno de' dodici andò dai principi de' sacerdoti per darlo nelle loro mani.	10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.
11 E questi, uditolo, si rallegrarono: e promisero di dargli del denaro. E cercava occasione favorevole per tradirlo.	11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.
12 E il primo gramo degli azzimi, quando immolavan la pasqua, dissero a lui i discepoli: Dove vuoi tu, che andiamo ad apparecchiare pel mangiamento della pasqua?	12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'
13 Ed ei mandò due de' suoi discepoli, e disse loro: Andate in città: e incontrerete un uomo portante una secchia d'acqua; andategli dietro:	13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,
14 E in qualunque luogo entri dite al padrone della casa: il maestro dice: Dov' è il mio refettorio, ove io mangi la pasqua co' miei discepoli?	14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"
15 Ed egli vi farà vedere un cenacolo grande, messo in ordine: e quivi apparecchiate per noi.	15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'
16 E i discepoli andarono, e giunti in città trovarono, conforme avea loro detto, e prepararon la pasqua.	16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.
17 E fattosi sera, v' andò egli con i dodici.	17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.
18 E mentre erano a mensa, e mangiavano, disse Gesù: In verità vi dico, che uno di voi, il quale mangia con meco, mi tradirà.	18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'
19 Ma essi cominciarono a rattristarsi, e a dirgli uno dopo l'altro: Son forse io?	19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'
20 Ed egli disse loro: Uno de' dodici, il quale intigne la mano nel piatto con me.	20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.
21 E il Figliuolo dell'uomo se ne va, come è stato scritto di lui: ma guai a quell'uomo, per cui il Figliuolo dell'uomo sarà tradito. Meglio era per un uomo tale il non esser mai nato.	21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'
22 E mentre quelli mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane: e benedettolo, lo spezzò, e lo dette loro, e disse: Prendete: questo o il mio Corpo.	22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'
23 E, preso il calice, rese le grazie, lo dette ad essi: e tutti ne bevvero.	23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,
24 E disse loro: Questo è il Sangue mio del nuovo testamento, il quale sarà sparso per molti.	24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.
25 In verità vi dico, che non berrò più di questo frutto della vite sino a quel giorno, in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio.	25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'
26 E, detto l'inno, andarono al monte degli ulivi.	26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
27 Allora Gesù disse loro: Tutti patirete scandalo a riguardo mio in questa notte; imperocché sta scritto: Percuoterò il pastore, e si dispergeranno le pecorelle.	27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;
28 Ma dopo che io sarò risuscitato, vi anderò innanzi nella Galilea.	28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'
29 Pietro però gli disse: Quand'anche io tutti si scandalizzassero, non io però.	29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'
30 E Gesù gli disse: In verità ti dico, che tu oggi in questa notte, prima che il gallo abbia cantato la seconda volta, mi negherai tre volte.	30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'
31 Ma quegli soggiugneva di più: Quand' anche bisogni con te morire, non ti negherò. E il simil dicevan pur tutti.	31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.
32 E arrivarono in un luogo chiamato Getsemani ed egli disse a' suoi discepoli: Fermatevi qui, sintantoché io faccia orazione.	32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'
33 E prese seco Pietro, e Giacomo, e Giovanni: e cominciò ad atterrirsi, e rattristarsi.	33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.
34 E disse loro: l'anima mia è afflitta sino alla morte: trattenetevi qui e vegliate.	34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'
35 E avanzatosi al quanto, si prostrò per terra: e pregò, che, se era possibile, si allontanasse da lui quell'ora.	35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.
36 E disse: Abba, padre, tutto è possibile a te: allontana da me questo calice; ma non quello, che voglio io, ma quel, che vuoi tu.	36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'
37 E tornò da loro, e trovolli addormentati. E disse a Pietro: Simone, tu dormi? Non hai potuto vegliare una sol ora?	37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?
38 Vegliate, ed orate per non cadere in tentazione. Lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è inferma.	38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'
39 E andò nuovamente ad orare, ripetendo le stesse parole.	39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
40 E tornato li trovò di nuovo addormentati (imperocché i loro occhi erano aggravati) e non sapevano cosa rispondergli.	40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.
41 E ritornò la terza volta, e disse loro: Su via dormite, e riposatevi. Basta così: l'ora è venuta: ecco che il Figliuolo dell'uomo sarà dato nelle mani de' peccatori.	41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over.The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 Alzatevi, andiamo. Ecco che colui, che mi tradirà, è vicino.	42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'
43 E non avea finito di dire, quand' eccoti Giuda Iscariote uno dei dodici, e con esso gran gente armata di spade, e di bastoni, spedita da' principi de' Sacerdoti, e dagli Scribi, e dai seniori.	43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44 E il traditore avea dato loro il segnale, dicendo: Colui, che io bacerò, è desso; prendetelo, e conducetelo con attenzione.	44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'
45 E venuto che fu, accostossi subito a Gesù, e dissegli: Dio ti salvi, Maestro, e lo baciò.	45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.
46 Ma coloro gettarongli le mani ad dosso, e lo catturarono.	46 The others seized him and arrested him.
47 E uno degli astanti mise mano alla spada, e ferì un servo del sommo Sacerdote: e gli mozzò un orecchio.	47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.
48 E Gesù prese la parola, e disso loro: Quasi io fossi un assassino, siete venuti con ispade, e bastoni per pigliarmi?	48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?
49 Ogni giorno io stava tra voi nel tempio, insegnando, né mi pigliaste. Ma debbono le scritture adempiersi.	49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'
50 Allora i suoi discepoli abbandonatolo, tutti fuggirono.	50 And they al deserted him and ran away.
51 E un certo giovinetto seguiva: Gesù coperto di una veste di lino su la, nuda carne: e lo pigliarono.	51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,
52 Ma egli, lasciata andare la veste, scappò ignudo da loro.	52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
53 E condusser Gesù dal sommo sacerdote: e si adunarono tutti i sacerdoti, e gli Scribi, e i seniori.	53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.
54 Pietro però lo seguitò da lungi sindentro al cortile del sommo Sacerdote e sedeva al fuoco con i ministri, e scaldavasi.	54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.
55 Ma i prìncipi de' sacerdoti, e tutto il consesso cercavano testimonianze contro Gesù per farlo morire, e non le trovavano.	55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.
56 Imperocché molti deponevano il falso contro di lui: ma le loro deposizioni non concordavano.	56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.
57 E alzatisi alcuni attestavano il falso contro di lui, dicendo:	57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,
58 Noi gli abbiamo sentito dire: Io distruggerò questo tempio manofatto, e in tre giorni fabbricheronne un altro non manofatto.	58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '
59 Ma la loro testimonianza non era concorde.	59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.
60 E alzatosi in mezzo il sommo sacerdote, interrogò Gesù, dicendo: Non rispondi tu nulla alle cose, che ti sono rinfacciate da costoro?	60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'
61 Ma egli taceva, e non rispose parola. Di nuovo lo interrogò il sommo Sacerdote, e dissegli: Se' tu il Cristo, il figliuol di Dio benedetto?	61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'
62 E Gesù gli disse: Io lo sono: e vedrete il Figliuol dell'uomo scendere alla destra della maestà di Dio, e venir sulle nubi del cielo.	62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'
63 E il sommo Sacerdote, stracciatesi le sue vesti, disse: Che bisogno abbiamo più di testimoni?	63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?
64 Avete udito la bestemmia. Che ve ne pare? E tutti lo condannarono per reo di morte.	64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.
65 E cominciarono alcuni a sputargli adosso, e velargli la faccia, e a dargli de' pugni, dicendogli: profetizza: e i ministri lo schiaffeggiavano.	65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.
66 E trovandosi Pietro da basso nel cortile, venne una delle serve del sommo Sacerdote:	66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.
67 E veduto Pietro, che si scaldava, e fissato in lui lo sguardo, disse: Anche tu eri con Gesù Nazareno.	67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'
68 Ma egli negò, dicendo: Nè lo conosco, né so quello, che tu ti dica. E uscì fuora davanti al cortile, e il gallo cantò.	68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.
69 E di nuovo avendolo veduto una serva, cominciò a dire agli astanti: Costui è di quelli.	69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'
70 Ma egli negò di bel nuovo. E di li a poco nuovamente gli astanti dissero a Pietro: Tu se' di quelli sicuramente: imperocché sei anche Galileo.	70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'
71 Ma egli principiò a mandarsi delle imprecazioni, e a giurare: Non conosco quest'uomo, di cui parlate.	71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'
72 E subito per la seconda volta il gallo cantò. E Pietro si ricordò della parala dettagli da Gesù: Prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte, e incominciò a piagnere.	72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.
