BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 MA sopra gli empj l'ira si stette senza misericordia insino al fine. Perocché egli di lor prevedeva anche il futuro:	1 But the godless were assailed by merciless anger to the very end, for he knew beforehand what theywould do,
2 Come dopo di aver permesso a quelli di andarsene, e di averli licenziati con molta premura, ripentitisi gli avrebbono inseguiti.	2 how, after letting his people leave and hastening their departure, they would change their minds andgive chase.
3 Quindi essendo tuttora involti nel lutto, e spargendo lagrime sui monumenti dei morti, si appigliarono ad un altro stolto consiglio, e quelli, che avean cacciati via colle suppliche, li perseguitarono come fuggitivi:	3 They were actual y stil conducting their mourning rites and lamenting at the tombs of their dead, whenanother mad scheme came into their heads and they set out to pursue, as though runaways, the people whomthey had expel ed and begged to go.
4 Ora a tal fine li conduceva una meritata necessità; la memoria delle passate cose perderono, affinché il nuovo gastigo supplisse a quel, che mancava a' loro tormenti:	4 A wel -deserved fate urged them to this extreme and made them forget what had already happened,so that they would add to their torments the one punishment outstanding
5 E miracoloso passaggio avesse il tuo popolo: quelli poi nuovo genere di morte provassero;	5 and, while your people were experiencing a journey contrary to al expectations, would themselvesmeet an extraordinary death.
6 Imperocché tutte le creature ciascuna nel suo genere servendo a' tuoi comandi prendevan nuova forma, affinchè i tuoi servi si conservassero illesi.	6 For the whole creation, submissive to your commands, had its very nature re-created, so that yourchildren should be preserved from harm.
7 Cosi la nuvola faceva ombra ai loro alloggiamenti, e dove prima era l'acqua, comparve asciutta terra, e strada senza intoppo pel mare Rosso, e nell'abisso profondo una verdeggiante campagna;	7 Overshadowing the camp there was the cloud; where there had been water, dry land was seen to rise;the Red Sea became an unimpeded way, the tempestuous waves, a green plain;
8 A traverso della quale passò tutto il popolo protetto dalla tua mano, spettatore de' miracoli, e de' prodigi fatti da te.	8 sheltered by your hand, the whole nation passed across, gazing at these amazing prodigies.
9 Onde a guisa di ben pasciuti puledri, e a guisa di agnelletti esultarono, le tue glorie cantando, o Signore, che li salvasti.	9 They were like horses at pasture, they skipped like lambs, singing your praises, Lord, their deliverer.
10 Conciossiachè si ricordavano ancora di quello, che era avvenuto là, dove forestieri abitavano, come in luogo de' parti degli animali la terra produsse delle mosche, e in luogo di pesci scaturì dal fiume una turba di ranocchi.	10 For they stil remembered the events of their exile, how the land had bred mosquitoes instead ofanimals and the River had disgorged mil ions of frogs instead of fish.
11 Vider dipoi una nuova razza di uccelli, allorché mossi da concupiscienza, chiesero cibi da banchettare.	11 Later they were to see a new way for birds to come into being, when, goaded by greed, theydemanded something tasty,
12 Conciossiachè a consolare le loro brame volò dal mare la quaglia: ma sopra de' peccatori cadde il gastigo, non senza quegli indizi, che erano stati dati una volta (cioè) la furia de' fulmini: perocché con giustizia eran puniti secondo la loro malvagità.	12 and quails came up out of the sea to satisfy them.
13 Perocché la loro inospitalità fu più detestabile: gli uni non detter ricetto ad ospiti non conosciuti; gli altri poi riducevano in ischiavitù ospiti benemeriti.	13 On the sinners, however, punishments rained down not without violent thunder as early warning; andthey suffered what their own crimes had justly deserved since they had shown such bitter hatred to foreigners.
14 Né questo solo, ma anche quest'altro riflesso faceva per quelli, ch'ei ricevevano gli stranieri di mala voglia,	14 Others, indeed, had failed to welcome strangers who came to them, but the Egyptians had enslavedtheir own guests and benefactors.
15 Ma questi con atroci strapazzi affliggevan coloro, che aveano accolti con allegrezza, e che viveano con essi, sotto le medesime leggi.	15 The sinners, moreover, will certainly be punished for it, since they gave the foreigners a hostilewelcome;
16 Per la qual cosa furon puniti colla cecità: come già quelli davanti alla porta del giusto, quando in repentine tenebre involti andava ciascun di loro cercando l'ingresso della sua casa.	16 but the latter, having given a festive reception to people who already shared the same rights asthemselves, later overwhelmed them with terrible labours.
17 Conciossiachè allora quando gli elementi cangiano tra lor le funzioni, egli avviene come in un salterò, che diversifica i suoi concerti, abbenchè ogni corda il proprio suono ritenga, come può col solo vedere riconoscersi sicuramente;	17 Hence they were struck with blindness, like the sinners at the gate of the upright, when, yawningdarkness all around them, each had to grope his way through his own door.
18 Imperocché le terrestri cose in acquatiche si cambiavano, e quelle fatte per nuotare, alla terra facevan passaggio.	18 A new attuning of the elements occurred, as on a harp the notes may change their rhythm, though althe while preserving the same tone; and this is just what happened:
19 Il fuoco sopra la sua condizione ritenea sua forza nell'acqua, e l'acqua si scordava della virtù naturale di spegnere.	19 land animals became aquatic, swimming ones took to the land,
20 Per lo contrario le fiamme non danneggiarono i corpi delle fragili bestie, che dentro vi camminavano, né liquefacevano quell'ottimo cibo, che facilmente si struggea come il ghiaccio: Conciossiachè tu in tutti i modi esaltasti il tuo popolo, e lo onorasti, e non isdegnasti di assisterlo in ogni tempo, e in ogni luogo.	20 fire reinforced its strength in water, and water forgot the power of extinguishing it;
	21 flames, on the other hand, did not char the flesh of delicate animals that ventured into them; nor didthey melt the heavenly food resembling ice and as easily melted.
	22 Yes, Lord, in every way you have made your people great and glorious; you have never failed to helpthem at any time or place.
