| 1 Poi David, partito di là, si stabilì nei luoghi più sicuri d'Engaddi. | 1 When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, "Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi." |
| 2 Quando Saul fu di Ritorno dall'inseguimento dei Filistei, ebbe quest'avviso: « Ecco, David è nel deserto d'Engaddi ». | 2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats' Rocks. |
| 3 Allora Saul, presi tre mila uomini scelti da tutto Israele, andò in traccia di David e della sua gente anche per i dirupi più scoscesi, praticabili soltanto a camosci. | 3 And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave. |
| 4 Giunto ai parchi delle pecore, che eran lungo la sua via, trovata una caverna, Saul vi entrò per far di corpo. Or David e la sua gente eran nascosti nella parte più interna della spelonca. | 4 And the men of David said to him, "Here is the day of which the LORD said to you, Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.'" Then David arose and stealthily cut off the skirt of Saul's robe. |
| 5 Dissero a David i suoi servi: « Ecco il giorno del quale il Signore ti ha detto: Io ti darò nelle mani il tuo nemico, affinchè tu lo tratti a tuo piacere ». David si mosse, e senza far rumore tagliò un lembo del mantello di Saul. | 5 And afterward David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. |
| 6 Fatto ciò, a David battè il cuore, per aver tagliato il lembo del mantello di Saul; | 6 He said to his men, "The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is the LORD's anointed." |
| 7 e disse ai suoi uomini: « Dio m'assista, affinchè io non faccia questo al signor mio, all'unto del Signore, chè io non stenda la mia mano contro di lui, essendo egli l'unto del Signore ». | 7 So David persuaded his men with these words, and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave, and went upon his way. |
| 8 Colle sue parole David tenne a freno la sua gente e non permise che si avventassero contro Saul. Intanto Saul, uscito dalla spelonca, continuò il suo cammino. | 8 Afterward David also arose, and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, "My lord the king!" And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance. |
| 9 David gli tenne dietro, e uscito dalla spelonca, gridò dietro a Saul dicendo: « O re, mio Signore ». Saul si volse indietro. David si chinò verso terra e si prostrò. | 9 And David said to Saul, "Why do you listen to the words of men who say, Behold, David seeks your hurt? |
| 10 Poi disse a Saul: « Perchè dài retta alle parole di coloro che dicono: David cerca di farti del male? | 10 Lo, this day your eyes have seen how the LORD gave you today into my hand in the cave; and some bade me kill you, but I spared you. I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed.' |
| 11 Ecco i tuoi occhi han veduto oggi come il Signore ti aveva dato nelle mie mani nella spelonca; io ho avuto l'idea di ucciderti: ma il mio occhio ti ha risparmiato; perchè ho detto: Non stenderò la mia mano contro il signor mio, essendo egli l'unto del Signore. | 11 See, my father, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for by the fact that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and did not kill you, you may know and see that there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt my life to take it. |
| 12 Anzi, osserva, padre mio, e mira il lembo del tuo mantello nella mia mano. Avendo io tagliato il lembo del tuo mantello, senza volere stendere la mia mano contro di te, riconosci e vedi che non vi è alcun male nel mio operare, nè alcuna iniquità, e che non ho peccato contro di te: sei tu invece che tendi insidie alla mia vita, per togliermela. | 12 May the LORD judge between me and you, may the LORD avenge me upon you; but my hand shall not be against you. |
| 13 Il Signore giudichi fra me e te, il Signore mi vendichi di te; ma la mia mano non sia sopra di te. | 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness'; but my hand shall not be against you. |
| 14 Lo dice anche l'antico proverbio: Dagli empi verrà l'empietà, ma la mia mano non sia sopra di te. | 14 After whom has the king of Israel come out? After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog! After a flea! |
| 15 Chi perseguiti mai, o re d'Israele? Chi perseguiti tu? Un cane morto, tu perseguiti, una pulce. | 15 May the LORD therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and you, and see to it, and plead my cause, and deliver me from your hand." |
| 16 Il Signore sia giudice e giudichi fra me e te. Egli veda e giudichi la mia causa e mi liberi dalla tua mano ». | 16 When David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. |
| 17 Quando David ebbe finito di dir queste cose a Saul, Saul disse: « Non è forse questa la tua voce, o David figlio mio? » Saul alzò la voce e pianse. | 17 He said to David, "You are more righteous than I; for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil. |
| 18 Poi disse a David: « Tu sei più giusto di me, perchè tu mi hai fatto del bene, ed io t'ho reso del male. | 18 And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the LORD put me into your hands. |
| 19 Oggi poi tu m'hai mostrato il lene che mi hai fatto, perchè, avendomi il Signore dato nelle tue mani, non mi hai ucciso. | 19 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the LORD reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. |
| 20 Chi mai, trovando il suo nemico lo lascerà andare in pace? Che il Signore ti renda il contraccambio per quello che oggi hai fatto verso di me. | 20 And now, behold, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. |
| 21 Ora, siccome io so che tu certissimamente regnerai e avrai nella tua mano il regno d'Israele, | 21 Swear to me therefore by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father's house." |
| 22 giurami pel Signore che non distruggerai la mia stirpe dopo di me, e non cancellerai il mio nome dalla casa del padre mio ». | 22 And David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home; but David and his men went up to the stronghold. |
| 23 David giurò a Saul. Allora Saul se ne tornò a casa sua, e David e la sua gente salirono in luoghi più sicuri. | |
