1 Saul era figlio d un anno, quando cominciò a regnare e regnò due anni sopra Israele.	1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.
2 E poi si scelse tremila Israeliti, due nella dei quali stavano con Saul in Macmas e sul monte di Betel, mille con Gionata, in Gabaa di Beniamino; tutto il resto del popolo lo rimandò, ognuno a casa sua.	2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.
3 Or Gionata percosse il presidio dei Filistei che era in Gabaa. Quando ciò fu risaputo dai Filistei, Saul fece sonar la tromba per tutto il paese e dire: « Lo sappiano gli Ebrei ».	3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. 5 Ma i Filistei s'adunarono per combattere contro Israele: essi con trenta mila carri, sei mila cavalieri ed altra turba innumerabile come la rena che è sul lido del mare, salirono e posero il campo a Macmas, a oriente di Betaven.	5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.
6 Gli uomini d'Israele, vedendosi ridotti alle strette (il popolo era scoraggiato), si nascosero nelle caverne, nelle grotte, e nei massi e negli antri e nelle cisterne.	6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.
7 Gli Ebrei poi passarono di là dal Giordano, nella terra di Gad e di Galaad. Saul era sempre in Galgala e il popolo che lo seguiva era impaurito.	7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.
8 Or avendo aspettato setto giorni, secondo l'ordine di Samuele, siccome Samuele non veniva a Galgala e il popolo si sbandava da lui,	8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.
9 Saul disse: « Portatemi l'olocausto e le ostie pacifiche ». E offerse l'olocausto.	9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.
10 Mentre finiva d'offrir l'olocausto, ecco Samuele. Saul gli andò incontro per salutarlo;	10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.
11 Ma Samuele gli disse: « Che hai fatto? » Saul rispose: « Vedendo che il popolo si sbandava, che tu non eri giunto dentro i giorni stabiliti e che i Filistei s'erano radunati a Macmas,	11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.
12 ho detto: Ora i Filistei discenderanno contro di me in Galgala, avanti che io abbia placato la feccia del Signore, e spinto dalla necessità ho offerto l'olocausto ».	12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'
13 E Samuele disse a Saul: « Hai agito stoltamente, e non hai osservati gli ordini che il Signore Dio tuo ti aveva prescritti. Se tu non avessi fatto questo, ora il Signore avrebbe già stabilito in sempiterno il tuo regno sopra Israele;	13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.
14 ma invece il tuo regno non sussisterà più in avvenire. Il Signore s'c cercato un uomo secondo il suo cuore, il Signore l'ha destinato ad essere capo del suo popolo, perchè tu non hai osservato ciò che aveva comandato il Signore ».	14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'
15 Samuele se ne andò e sali da Galgala a Gabaa di Beniamino, e il resto del popolo salì dietro a Saul contro la turba dei Filistei che li assaliva mentre da Galgala andavano a Gabaa sul colle di Beniamino. Saul, fatta la rassegna della gente che si trovava con lui, si trovò con circa seicento uomini.	15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.
16 Or Saul, Gionata suo figlio e la gente che era con essi stavano in Gabaa di Beniamino; i Filistei erano a Macmas.	16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.
17 Dai campi dei Filistei uscirono tre schiere per andare al saccheggio; una schiera prese la via di Efra verso la terra di Saul;	17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;
18 la seconda prese la strada di Bethoron; la terza andava verso il territorio che domina la valle di Seboim, di faccia al deserto.	18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.
19 Ma in tutto il paese d'Israele non si trovava un fabbro ferraio: l'avevano impedito i Filistei, perchè temevano che gli Ebrei facessero delle spade e delle lance.	19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'
20 Perquesto ciascuno d'Israele doveva scendere dai Filistei, per fare aggiustare il suo vomere, la zappa, la scure, il sarshiello.	20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.
21 Eran quindi smussate le punte dei vomeri, delle zappe, dei tridenti e delle scuri, non avendo nemmeno come acuminare un pungolo.	21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.
22 Venuto adunque il dì della battaglia, nessuno di tutta la gente che era con Saul e Gionata aveva spada, o lancia; l'avevan soltanto Saul e Gionata suo figlio.	22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.
23 Intanto un presidio dei Filistei era uscito per andare verso Macmas.	23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.
