| 1 I figli d'Israele fecero il male nel cospetto del Signore, il quale li diede nelle mani dei Madianiti per sette anni, | 1 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hand of Midian seven years. |
| 2 oppressi oltremodo da loro, si fecero sui monti degli antri, delle caverne e dei luoghi forti per resistere. | 2 And the hand of Midian prevailed over Israel; and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves and the strongholds. |
| 3 Quando Israele aveva seminato salivano il Madianita, l'Amalecita e tutti gli altri delle nazioni orientali; | 3 For whenever the Israelites put in seed the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up and attack them; |
| 4 e piantate in mezzo ad esso le tende, guastavano in erba tutte le raccolte fino ai dintorni di Gaza, senza lasciar nulla a Israele del necessario alla vita: nè pecore, nè buoi, nè asini. | 4 they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the land, as far as the neighborhood of Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep or ox or ass. |
| 5 Essi infatti, venendo con tutti i loro greggi e colle loro tende in numero sterminato di uomini e di cammelli, a guisa di locuste riempivano ogni cosa e devastavano tutto ciò che toccavano. | 5 For they would come up with their cattle and their tents, coming like locusts for number; both they and their camels could not be counted; so that they wasted the land as they came in. |
| 6 Or Israele, oltremodo umiliato davanti ai Madianiti, | 6 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the people of Israel cried for help to the LORD. |
| 7 gridò al Signore domandando soccorso contro di loro. | 7 When the people of Israel cried to the LORD on account of the Midianites, |
| 8 Il Signore mandò loro un profeta che disse: « Questo dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: Io vi feci salire dall'Egitto, vi trassi dalla casa di servitù, | 8 the LORD sent a prophet to the people of Israel; and he said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage; |
| 9 vi liberai dalla mano degli Egiziani e di tutti i nemici che vi straziavano: li scacciai alla vostra venuta e vi diedi la loro terra. | 9 and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you, and gave you their land; |
| 10 E dissi: Io sono il Signore Dio vostro; non temete gli dèi degli Amorrei, nella terra dei quali abitate. Ma voi non avete voluto dare ascolto alla mia voce ». | 10 and I said to you, 'I am the LORD your God; you shall not pay reverence to the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.' But you have not given heed to my voice." |
| 11 Or l'angelo del Signore venne ad assidersi sotto la quercia di Efra, appartenente a Gioas capo della famiglia d'Ezri. Gedeone suo figlio batteva e vagliava il grano nel frantoio, per salvarlo dai Madianiti. | 11 Now the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. |
| 12 L'angelo del Signore gli apparve e gli disse: « Il Signore è teco, o fortissimo tra gli uomini ». | 12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, "The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor." |
| 13 E Gedeone a lui: « Dimmi, Signor mio, se il Signore è con noi, perchè ci sono avvenute tutte queste cose? Dove sono le sue maraviglie raccontate a noi dai nostri padri, che ci dicevano: Il Signore ci trasse fuori dall'Egitto? Ma ora il Signore ci ha abbandonati e ci ha dati nelle mani dei Madianiti ». | 13 And Gideon said to him, "Pray, sir, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this befallen us? And where are all his wonderful deeds which our fathers recounted to us, saying, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has cast us off, and given us into the hand of Midian." |
| 14 Il Signore, dopo averlo guardato, disse: « Va con questa tua forza, e libererai Israele dalle mani di Madian: sappi che t'ho mandato io ». | 14 And the LORD turned to him and said, "Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?" |
| 15 Gedeone rispose: « Signor mio, dimmi, ti prego, in qual modo potrò io liberare Israele? Ecco, la mia famiglia è l'infima di Manasse, ed io sono il minimo nella casa di mio padre ». | 15 And he said to him, "Pray, Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." |
| 16 E il Signore a lui: « Io sarò con te, e abbatterai i Madianiti come se fossero un sol uomo ». | 16 And the LORD said to him, "But I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man." |
| 17 E Gedeone: « Se ho trovata grazia dinanzi a te, dammi un segno d'esser tu che mi parli, | 17 And he said to him, "If now I have found favor with thee, then show me a sign that it is thou who speakest with me. |
| 18 e non partire di qui fìnch'io non torni a te portando il sacrifizio per offrirtelo ». E l'altro rispose: « Aspetterò il tuo ritorno ». | 18 Do not depart from here, I pray thee, until I come to thee, and bring out my present, and set it before thee." And he said, "I will stay till you return." |
| 19 Allora Gedeone, andato a casa, fece cocere un capretto e pani azzimi d'una misura di farina, poi, messe le carni in un canestro e il brodo delle carni in una pentola, portò ogni cosa sotto la quercia e gliel'offrì. | 19 So Gideon went into his house and prepared a kid, and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the oak and presented them. |
| 20 E l'angelo del Signore gli disse: « Prendi le carni e i pani azzimi, mettili su quella pietra e versavi sopra il brodo ». Appena egli l'ebbe fatto, | 20 And the angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them." And he did so. |
| 21 l'angelo del Signore, stesa la punta del bastone che teneva in mano, toccò le carni e i pani azzimi: dalla pietra uscì una fiamma che divorò le carni e i pani azzimi, e l'angelo sparì dai suoi occhi. | 21 Then the angel of the LORD reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and there sprang up fire from the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight. |
| 22 Gedeone, visto che era l'angelo del Signore, esclamò: « Ah, mio Signore Dio, io ho veduto l'angelo del Signore faccia a faccia! » | 22 Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the LORD; and Gideon said, "Alas, O Lord GOD! For now I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face." |
| 23 E il Signore gli disse: « La pace sia con te: non temere, non morrai ». | 23 But the LORD said to him, "Peace be to you; do not fear, you shall not die." |
| 24 Gedeone allora edificò in quel luogo un altare al Signore, e lo chiamò: « Pace del Signore », come al presente è chiamato. Essendo egli tutt'ora in Efra, che appartiene alla famiglia di Ezri, | 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it, The LORD is peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. |
| 25 in quella notte il Signore gli disse: « Prendi il toro di tuo padre, e un altro toro di sette anni, poi, distrutto l'altare di Baal, che è di tuo padre, e tagliato il boschetto che è intorno all'altare, | 25 That night the LORD said to him, "Take your father's bull, the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal which your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it; |
| 26 erigerai un altare al Signore Dio tuo sulla cima di questa pietra sopra la quale già ponesti il sacrifizio: preso poi il secondo toro, l'offrirai in olocausto sopra una massa di legna del bosco che avrai tagliato ». | 26 and build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order; then take the second bull, and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down." |
| 27 Gedeone, presi dieci uomini dei suoi servi, fece come il Signore gli aveva ordinato; però, temendo la famiglia di suo padre e gli uomini di quella città, non volle farlo di giorno; ma eseguì ogni cosa di notte. | 27 So Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had told him; but because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night. |
| 28 Quando gli uomini di quella città, levatisi la mattina, videro l'altare di Baal distrutto, il boschetto tagliato, e il secondo toro posto sopra l'altare di fresco eretto, | 28 When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered upon the altar which had been built. |
| 29 si dissero l'un l'altro: « Chi l'ha fatto? » E mentre ne cercavano l'autore, fu loro detto: « Tali cose l'ha fatte Gedeone figlio di Gioas ». | 29 And they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" And after they had made search and inquired, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing." |
| 30 Allora dissero a Gioas: « Mena qua tuo figlio, che deve esser messo a morte, perchè ha distrutto l'altare di Baal, e ne ha tagliato il boschetto ». | 30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has pulled down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it." |
| 31 Ma Gioas rispose loro: « Siete forse voi i vendicatori di Baal, da combattere per lui? Chi è suo nemico muoia avanti che spunti la luce di domani. Se egli è Dio, si vendichi di chi ha distrutto il suo altare ». | 31 But Joash said to all who were arrayed against him, "Will you contend for Baal? Or will you defend his cause? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been pulled down." |
| 32 Da quel giorno Gedeone fu chiamato Ierobaal, per chè Gioas aveva detto: « Baal si vendichi di chi ha distrutto il suo altare ». | 32 Therefore on that day he was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, "Let Baal contend against him," because he pulled down his altar. |
| 33 Or quando i Madianiti, gli Amaleciti e i popoli d'Oriente, radunatisi insieme e passato il Giordano, vennero a porre il campo nella valle di Iezrael, | 33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and crossing the Jordan they encamped in the Valley of Jezreel. |
| 34 Spirito del Signore investì Gedeone, che, sonando la tromba, radunò la casa di Abiezer, affinchè lo seguisse. | 34 But the Spirit of the LORD took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. |
| 35 Poi mandò messi a tutto Manasse, che lo seguì; altri messi ad Aser, a Zàbulon e a Nettali, che vennero ad unirsi con lui. | 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they too were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali; and they went up to meet them. |
| 36 Gedeone disse a Dio: « Se tu salvi Israele per mezzo di me, come hai detto: | 36 Then Gideon said to God, "If thou wilt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said, |
| 37 io metterò sull'aia questo vello di lana: se la rugiada sarà soltanto sul vello, restando tutta la terra asciutta, io saprò che per mezzo di me libererai Israele, come hai detto ». | 37 behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that thou wilt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said." |
| 38 Così avvenne. E alzatosi di notte, Gedeone spremette il vello, e riempì una conca di rugiada. | 38 And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. |
| 39 Poi disse di nuovo a Dio: « Non si accenda il tuo furore contro di me, se cerco un'altra prova e, chiedendo un segno nel vello, prego che il solo vello sia asciutto, e tutta la terra molle di rugiada ». | 39 Then Gideon said to God, "Let not thy anger burn against me, let me speak but this once; pray, let me make trial only this once with the fleece; pray, let it be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew." |
| 40 Il Signore fece in quella notte come egli aveva domandato: restando il solo vello asciutto, la rugiada fu per tutta la terra. | 40 And God did so that night; for it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew. |
