1 Giosuè, figlio di Nun, da Setim mandò segretamente due esploratori, dicendo loro: « Andate a esplorare il paese e la città di Gerico ». Ed essi, andati, entrarono in casa d'una donna di mala vita, chiamata Rahab, e vi riposarono.	1 Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, saying, "Go, reconnoiter the land and Jericho." When the two reached Jericho, they went into the house of a harlot named Rahab, where they lodged.
2 E la nuova fu recata al re di Gerico, al quale fu detto: « Guarda, degli uomini dei figli d'Israele son entrati qua di notte per esplorare il paese ».	2 But a report was brought to the king of Jericho that some Israelites had come there that night to spy out the land.
3 Allora il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Rahab: « Fa uscir fuori gli uomini che son venuti da te e son entrati in casa tua, perchè sono spioni venuti ad esplorare tutto il paese ».	3 So the king of Jericho sent Rahab the order, "Put out the visitors who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out the entire land."
4 Ma la donna, dopo aver presi e nascosti quegli uomini, disse: « È vero, da me son venuti, ma non sapevo donde fossero,	4 The woman had taken the two men and hidden them, so she said, "True, the men you speak of came to me, but I did not know where they came from.
5 e poi al chiudersi della porta, sul far della notte sono usciti, e non so dove siano andati: inseguiteli subito, che li raggiungerete ».	5 At dark, when it was time for the gate to be shut, they left, and I do not know where they went. You will have to pursue them immediately to overtake them."
6 Essa poi fece salire quegli uomini sulla terrazza della sua casa e li nascose sotto la stoppia di lino che vi si trovava.	6 Now, she had led them to the roof, and hidden them among her stalks of flax spread out there.
7 Or quelli che erano stati mandati l'inseguirono per la strada che mena al guado del Giordano, e appena furono usciti, la porta fu chiusa.	7 But the pursuers set out along the way to the fords of the Jordan, and once they had left, the gate was shut.
8 Quelli ch'eran nascosti non dormivano ancora, quando la donna salì da loro e disse:	8 Before the spies fell asleep, Rahab came to them on the roof
9 « So bene che il Signore vi ha dato il paese: il terrore di voi è già caduto sopra di noi, e tutti gli abitanti del paese sono abbattuti.	9 and said: "I know that the LORD has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of you.
10 Abbiamo udito che il Signore seccò le acque de Mar Rosso, quando vi entraste per uscire dall'Egitto, e come avete trattato i due re degli Amorrei, che eran di là dal Giordano, Sehon ed Og, che voi metteste a morte.	10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and how you dealt with Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, whom you doomed to destruction.
11 Nel sentire queste cose, ci siam perduti di coraggio al vostro arrivo, sapendo che il Signore Dio vostro è Dio lassù in cielo e quaggiù in terra.	11 At these reports, we are disheartened; everyone is discouraged because of you, since the LORD, your God, is God in heaven above and on earth below.
12 Or dunque giuratemi pel Signore d'usar misericordia colla casa di mio padre, come io l'ho usata con voi, e datemi un segno sicuro	12 Now then, swear to me by the LORD that, since I am showing kindness to you, you in turn will show kindness to my family; and give me an unmistakable token
13 che risparmierete mio padre e mia madre, i miei fratelli e le mie sorelle, e tutto ciò che loro appartiene, e libererete le nostre anime dalla morte ».	13 that you are to spare my father and mother, brothers and sisters, and all their kin, and save us from death."
14 Ed essi le risposero: « Che moriamo noi per voi, se però non ci tradisci: quando il Signore ci avrà dato il paese, useremo verso di te misericordia e fedeltà ».	14 "We pledge our lives for yours," the men answered her. "If you do not betray this errand of ours, we will be faithful in showing kindness to you when the LORD gives us the land."
15 Allora essa li calò con una fune giù dalla finestra, chè la sua casa era attaccata alle mura;	15 Then she let them down through the window with a rope; for she lived in a house built into the city wall.
16 e disse loro: « Andate verso il monte, per non essere in contrati da essi quando ritorneranno, e state lassù nascosti per tre giorni, finché non sian tornati, e poi andrete per la vostra strada ».	16 "Go up into the hill country," she suggested to them, "that your pursuers may not find you. Hide there for three days, until they return; then you may proceed on your way."
17 Ed essi a lei: « Non mancheremo a questo giuramento che ci hai fatto fare,	17 The men answered her, "This is how we will fulfill the oath you made us take:
18 se, quando entreremo nel paese, ti farai riconoscere con questa cordicella di color scarlatto, legandola aila finestra dalla quale ci hai calati, e se raduni in casa tua tuo padre, tua madre, i tuoi fratelli e tutta la tua parentela.	18 When we come into the land, tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you are letting us down; and gather your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.
19 Se alcuno uscirà dalla porta della tua casa, il sangue di lui sarà sopra la sua testa e non ci avremo colpa noi; ma il sangue di tutti quelli che saranno in casa tua cadrà sopra il nostro capo, se alcuno li toccherà.	19 Should any of them pass outside the doors of your house, he will be responsible for his own death, and we shall be guiltless. But we shall be responsible if anyone in the house with you is harmed.
20 Se poi per tra dirci tu divulgassi quello che diciamo, noi saremo sciolti dal giuramento che ci hai fatto fare ».	20 If, however, you betray this errand of ours, we shall be quit of the oath you have made us take."
21 Essa rispose: « Sia fatto come avete detto »; e dopo averli licenziati affinchè se ne andassero, legò la cordicella di color scarlatto alla finestra.	21 "Let it be as you say," she replied, and bade them farewell. When they were gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22 Ed essi andarono al monte e vi stettero tre giorni, finché non fossero tornati quelli che li avevano inseguiti, e che non li trovarono, sebbene li avessero cercati per ogni via.	22 They went up into the hills, where they stayed three days until their pursuers, who had sought them all along the road without finding them, returned.
23 Tornati questi in città, gli esploratori scesero dal monte, e, passato il Giordano, tornarono da Giosuè, figlio di Nun, a cui raccontarono quanto era loro accaduto,	23 Then the two came back down from the hills, crossed the Jordan to Joshua, son of Nun, and reported all that had befallen them.
24 e dissero: « Il Signore ha dato nelle nostre mani tutto quel paese, e tutti i suoi abitanti sono abbattuti dallo spavento ».	24 They assured Joshua, "The LORD has delivered all this land into our power; indeed, all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of us."
