Lettera agli Efesini 5

1 Siate dunque imitatori di Dio come figlioli diletti,	1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 e vivete nell'amore, come Cristo che ci ha amati e ha dato per noi se stesso a Dio in olocausto come ostia di soave odore.	2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
3 La fornicazione, l'impurità di qualsiasi sorta, l'avarizia non si senta neppur nominare tra voi, come a santi si conviene.	3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4 Non oscenità, non discorsi sciocchi, non buffonerie, tutte cose indecenti; ma piuttosto il rendimento di grazie.	4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5 Perché, sappiatelo bene, nessuno che sia fornicatore, e impudico, o avaro (che è un idolatra) ha l'eredità nel regno di Cristo e di Dio.	5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
6 Nessuno vi seduca con vani discorsi, perchè a causa di questi vien l'ira di Dio sugli increduli.	6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
7 Dunque non vi associate con loro.	7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8 Una volta eravate tenebre, ma ora siete luce nel Signore. Vivete come figli della luce.	8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
9 Or frutto della luce è tutto ciò che è buono, giusto e vero.	9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
10 Esaminate ciò che piace al Signore	10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 e non vogliate prendere parte alle opere infruttuose delle tenebre, anzi condannatele;	11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
12 perchè le cose da essi fatte in segreto sono vergognose anche a dirsi,	12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
13 ma tutte queste cose, che sono da riprovarsi, sono messe in chiaro dalla luce, essendo luce tutto ci che si manifesta.	13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
14 Per questo è detto: Alzati tu che dormi, risorgi dai morti, e Cristo t'illuminerà.	14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
15 Guardate adunque, fratelli, di condurvi cautamente: non da stolti,	15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 ma da prudenti, riscattando il tempo, perchè i giorni sono cattivi;	16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 quindi non siate imprudenti, ma studiate bene quale sia la volontà di Dio.	17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 E non vi ubriacate col vino, sorgente di lussuria, ma siate ripieni di Spirito Santo.	18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Conversate tra di voi con salmi, inni e canti spirituali, cantando e salmeggiando di tutto cuore al Signore,	19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 ringraziando sempre Dio e Padre nel nome del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo per ogni cosa.	20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Sottomettetevi gli uni agli altri nel timore di Cristo.	21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
22 Le donne siano soggette ai loro mariti come al Signore,	22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 perché l'uomo è capo della donna, come Cristo è capo della Chiesa, egli salvatore del corpo di lei.	23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Or come la Chiesa è soggetta a Cristo, così le donne devono star soggette ai loro mariti in ogni cosa.	24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25 Voi, uomini, amate le vostre mogli come anche Cristo amò la Chiesa, dando se stesso per lei,	25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 per santificarla, purificandola col lavacro di acqua, mediante la parola di vita,	26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 affinchè la Chiesa gli potesse comparire davanti gloriosa, senza macchia, senza grinze, senza altre cose del genere, ma santa ed immacolata.	27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28 Così appunto i mariti devono amare le loro mogli, come i propri corpi; chi ama la sua moglie ama se stesso.	28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29 Or nessuno ebbe mai in odio la propria carne, anzi la nutre e la circonda di cure, come anche Cristo fa per la Chiesa,	29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30 giacchè noi siamo membra del corpo di lui, della sua carne, delle sue ossa.	30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 Per questo l'uomo abbandonerà il padre e la madre e starà unito alla sua moglie, e i due diverranno una stessa carne.	31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 Questo sacramento è grande, io però parlo riguardo a Cristo ed alla Chiesa.	32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Ma ciascuno di voi in particolare ami la sua moglie come se stesso, e la moglie porti rispetto al marito.	33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
