| 1 Or io, Paolo, vi esorto per la mansuetudine e la modestia di Cristo, io « che ho l'apparenza d'umile quando son tra voi, ma che fo l'ardito con voi quando son lontano », | 1 I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ--I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold to you when I am away!-- |
| 2 vi supplico a fare in modo che, quando sarò presente, non ardisca agire con quella franchezza che mi si attribuisce, riguardo a certuni i quali si figurano che noi camminiamo secondo la carne. | 2 I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of acting in worldly fashion. |
| 3 Anche vivendo nella carne, noi non militiamo secondo la carne. | 3 For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, |
| 4 Infatti le armi con le quali combattiamo non son carnali, ma potenti in Dio a distruggere le fortezze. Noi distruggiamo i disegni | 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. |
| 5 e qualunque altura che s'innalza contro la scienza di Dio e assoggettiamo ogni intelletto all'obbedienza di Cristo, | 5 We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, |
| 6 e siam pronti a punire qualunque disobbedienza, quando l'obbedienza vostra sarà completa. | 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. |
| 7 Voi guardate all'apparenza. Se alcuno dentro di sè confida d'esser di Cristo, pensi ancora che come è lui siam di Cristo anche noi. | 7 Look at what is before your eyes. If any one is confident that he is Christs, let him remind himself that as he is Christs, so are we. |
| 8 Inoltre, quand'anche mi gloriassi un po' troppo dell'autorità che il Signore ci ha data a vostra edificazione e non a vostra rovina, non avrei da provarne vergogna. | 8 For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I shall not be put to shame. |
| 9 E non s'abbia a credere che io voglia spaventarvi colle lettere, | 9 I would not seem to be frightening you with letters. |
| 10 come dicono alcuni: « Eh! le sue lettere son gravi e forti; ma la presenza del corpo è meschina, e il discorso non vai nulla ». | 10 For they say, "His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account." |
| 11 Quel tale che parla cosi pensi bene che quali siamo a parole, per lettera, da lontano, tali saremo a fatti quando saremo presenti. | 11 Let such people understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. |
| 12 Certo non abbiamo l'ardire di metterci in mezzo o di paragonarci con certuni che si lodano da loro stessi; noi invece ci misuriamo su noi medesimi, e con noi stessi ci paragoniamo. | 12 Not that we venture to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another, and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. |
| 13 Però non ci glorieremo oltre misura, ma secondo il limite del campo che Dio ci ha misurato e che arriva fino a voi. | 13 But we will not boast beyond limit, but will keep to the limits God has apportioned us, to reach even to you. |
| 14 E non passiamo i limiti, come chi non è arrivato fino a voi, perchè fino a voi ci siamo arrivati col Vangelo di Cristo. | 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you; we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. |
| 15 E nemmeno ci vantiamo di fatiche altrui, ma speriamo che, crescendo la vostra fede, anche noi c'ingrandiremo in mezzo a voi, seguendo i nostri limiti accresciuti, | 15 We do not boast beyond limit, in other men's labors; but our hope is that as your faith increases, our field among you may be greatly enlarged, |
| 16 e potremo portare il Vangelo anche nei paesi che sono al di là del vostro, senza entrare nel campo altrui, e senza gloriarci di lavori fatti da altri. | 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's field. |
| 17 Ma «chi si gloria, si glorii nel Signore », | 17 "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord." |
| 18 perchè non è approvato chi si loda, ma chi è lodato dal Signore. | 18 For it is not the man who commends himself that is accepted, but the man whom the Lord commends. |
