1 Or i figli di Ruben e di Gad, che avevano molto gregge ed immensa dovizia di bestiame, avendo veduto come le terre di Iazer e di Galaad erano atte ai pascoli,	1 Now, the Reubenites and Gadites owned very large herds of cattle. Having seen that the territories ofJazer and Gilead formed an ideal region for raising stock,
2 si presentarono a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazaro ed ai principi della moltitudine e dissero:	2 the Gadites and Reubenites went to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the leaders of the community, andsaid to them,
3 « Atarot, Dibon, Iazer, Nemra, Esebon, Eleale, Saban, Nebo e Beon,	3 'The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,
4 terre dal Signore colpite davanti ai figli d'Israele, son floridissime di pascoli, e noi tuoi sia vi abbiamo numeroso bestiame;	4 which Yahweh has conquered before the advancing community of Israel, is ideal land for raisingstock, and your servants are cattle breeders.
5 Ti preghiamo adunque, se abbiamo trovata grazia, dinanzi a te, di darla in possesso ai tuoi servi, senza farci passare il Giordano ».	5 So', they said, 'if you approve, give your servants this land for us to own; do not make us cross theJordan.'
6 Mosè rispose loro: « Dovrebbero dunque andare alla guerra i vostri fratelli, mentre voi ve ne starete qui in riposo?	6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, 'Do you intend your brothers to go into battle while youstay here?
7 Perché scoraggiate i figli d'Israele, togliendo loro l'ardire di passar nel paese che il Signore darà loro?	7 Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing to the country which Yahweh has given them?
8 Non fecero così i vostri padri, quando io da Cadesbarne mandai ad esplorare il paese?	8 Your fathers behaved in the same way when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the country,
9 Dopo esser giunti fino alla valle del Grappolo ed aver girato tutto il paese, scoraggiarono i figli d'Israele in modo da non farli entrare nella terra che loro diede il Signore.	9 for, having gone as far as the Val ey of Eshcol and seen the country, they discouraged the Israelitesfrom entering the country which Yahweh had given them.
10 Il quale, sdegnato, giurò e disse:	10 Hence Yahweh's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath,
11 « Da venti anni in su, questi uomini usciti dall'Egitto non vedranno la, terra, da, me promessa, con giuramento ad Abramo, ad Isacco e a Giacobbe; perche non mi han voluto seguire,	11 "No man of twenty years and over, who left Egypt, shal set eyes on the country which I promised onoath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . . . , for they have not fol owed me absolutely,
12 eccetto Caleb figlio di Cenezeo e Giosuè figlio di Nun, i quali hanno adempiuto la mia volontà ».	12 except for Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun: these indeed havefol owed Yahweh absolutely."
13 Sdegnato contro Israele, il Signore lo ha fatto andare errando pel deserto quarant'anni, fino a tanto che non fosse consumata, quella generazione che aveva fatto il male dinanzi a lui.	13 Yahweh's anger being aroused by Israel, he made them wander in the desert for forty years, untilthe generation that offended Yahweh had all disappeared.
14 « Ed ecco ora, sorger voi in luogo dei vostri padri, rampolli e schiatta di uomini peccatori, ad accrescere il furor del Signori, contro Israele.	14 And now you rise up in your father's place, offshoot of sinful stock, to increase Yahweh's burninganger with Israel even more!
15 Se voi non volete seguirlo, egli abbandonerà il popolo nel deserto, e sarete la causa dello sterminio di tutti ».	15 If you turn away from him, he wil prolong the time spent in the desert, and you wil bring about thisentire people's ruin.'
16 Ma essi, accostandosi più da vicino dissero: « Noi costruiremo dei recinti per le pecore, delle stalle per i bestiami e delle città fortificate per i vostri figlioli;	16 They came to Moses and said, 'We should like to build sheepfolds here for our flocks and towns forour little ones.
17 ma poi armati e in ordine combatteremo alla testa dei figli d'Israele, fino a che non li avremo introdotti nei luoghi loro. I nostri figlioli e tutto ciò che possiamo avere resteranno nelle città fortificate, a causa delle insidie degli abitanti.	17 We ourselves wil take up arms and lead the Israelites until we have brought them to the placeappointed for them, while our little ones stay in the fortified towns to be safe from the local inhabitants.
18 Non torneremo alle nostre case,finché i figli d'Israele non siano in possesso della loro eredità;	18 We wil not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage.
19 e non cercheremo nulla al di là del Giordano, perchè abbiamo già la nostra parte ad oriente di esso».	19 For we shall have no heritage with them on the other bank of the Jordan or beyond, since ourheritage has fal en to us here, east of the Jordan.'
20 Mosè rispose loro: « Se fate quanto promettete, se andate pronti alla battaglia davanti al Signore,	20 Moses said to them, 'If you do as you have said, if you are prepared to fight before Yahweh,
21 se ogni guerriero passa il Giordano, finche il Signore non abbia distrutti i suoi nemici	21 and if al those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven all hisenemies out before him,
22 e assoggettata tutta quella terra, allora voi sarete senza colpa davanti al Signore e a Israele, e il paese che desiderate sarà di vostra proprietà davanti al Signore.	22 then, once the country has become subject to Yahweh, you may go back, and will have dischargedyour obligation to Yahweh and Israel, and Yahweh wil consider this territory yours.
23 Ma se non farete quanto dite, senza dubbio peccherete contro il Signore, e sappiate che il vostro peccato vi arriverà.	23 But if you do not, you wil sin against Yahweh, and be sure your sin wil find you out.
24 Edificate adunque delle città per i vostri figli, dei recinti e delle stalle per le pecore e per i bestiami, e poi adempite la vostra promessa ».	24 Build towns, then, for your little ones and folds for your flocks; but do what you have promised.'
25 E i figli di Gad e di Ruben dissero a Mosè: « Noi siamo tuoi servi, e faremo quanto il nostro Signore comanda:	25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, 'Your servants will do as my lord directs.
26 lasciati i nostri figli, le donne, i greggi e i bestiami nelle città di Galaad,	26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and al our livestock wil stay in the towns of Gilead,
27 noi tutti, tuoi servi, andremo armati alla guerra come tu, o Signore, dici ».	27 but your servants, each armed for war, will cross in Yahweh's name and fight, as my lord says.'
28 Allora Mosè, dando gli ordini al sacerdote Eleazaro, a Giosuè figlio di Nun e ai capi delle famiglie delle tribù d'Israele, disse loro:	28 So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads offamilies in the Israelite tribes.
29 « Se i figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben, tutti armati per combattere davanti al Signore, passeranno con voi il Giordano, quando avrete assoggettato il paese, date loro come proprietà la terra di Galaad;	29 Moses said to them, 'If the Gadites and Reubenites, al those under arms, cross the Jordan with youto fight in Yahweh's name, then, once the country has become subject to you, you wil give them the territory ofGilead as theirs.
30 ma se non vorran passare armati con voi nella terra di Canaan, abbian tra voi la loro dimora ».	30 But if they will not cross with you under arms, they wil receive their domains in Canaan with the restof you.'
31 Il figli di Gad e di Ruben risposero: «Faremo come il Signore ha detto ai suoi servi:	31 To this, the Gadites and Reubenites replied, 'What Yahweh has said to your servants, we shal do.
32 andremo armati davanti al Signore nella terra di Canaan, riconoscendo d'aver già ricevuta la nostra porzione di qua dal Giordano ».	32 Under arms, we shall cross in Yahweh's name into Canaan, so that ownership of our heritage onthis side of the Jordan will be ours.'
33 Mosè adunque diede ai figli di Gad, ai figli di Ruben e alla metà della tribù di Manasse, figlio di Giuseppe, il regno di Sehon re degli Amorrei e il regno di Og re di Basan: la loro terra colle città e dintorni.	33 Moses then gave them -- the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph-- the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the country and the townswithin its territory, and the country's frontier-towns.
34 Cosi i figli di Gad riedificarono Dibon, Ataron, Aroer,	34 The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35 Etrot, Sofan, Tazer, legbaa,	35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36 Betnemra e Betaran: città forti e recinti per i loro bestiami.	36 Beth-Nimrah and Beth-Haran as fortified towns with folds for the flocks.
37 E i figli di Ruben edificarono Esebon, Eleale, Cariatami,	37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38 Nabo, Baalmeon, con nomi cambiati, e Sabama, e posero i nomi loro alle città edificate.	38 Nebo and Baal-Meon (the names of which were altered), and Sibmah, giving new names to thetowns which they rebuilt.
39 Poi i figli di Machir, figlio di Manasse, andarono nella terra di Galaad, la devastarono e uccisero gli Amorrei che l'abitavano.	39 The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead. They conquered it and drove out theAmorites who were there.
40 E Mosè diede la terra dì Galaad a Machir, figlio di Manasse, che l'abitò.	40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there.
41 Anche Iair, figlio di Manasse, andò ed occupò i suoi villaggi, ai quali diede il nome di Havot-Iair, cioè villaggi di Iair.	41 Jair son of Manasseh went and seized their encampments, renaming them the Encampments ofJair.
42 Anche Nobe andò e prese Canai coi suoi villaggi, e le diede il suo nome di Nobe.	42 Nobah went and seized Kenat with its dependent townships, and cal ed it Nobah after himself.
