| 1 La sapienza dell'uomo risplende nella sua faccia, e il potentissimo gli cangerà il volto. | 1 Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his countenance is changed. |
| 2 Io osservo i comandi del re e i precetti del giuramento di Dio. | 2 Keep the king's command, and because of your sacred oath be not dismayed; |
| 3 Non t'affrettare ad allontanarti dalla sua faccia e non persistere in azione cattiva, perchè Egli può fare tutto ciò che vuole, | 3 go from his presence, do not delay when the matter is unpleasant, for he does whatever he pleases. |
| 4 e la sua parola è piena di potenza, e nessuno può dire a lui: « Perchè fai in questa maniera? » | 4 For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, "What are you doing?" |
| 5 Chi osserva il precetto non proverà alcun male. Il cuore del sapiente conosce il tempo e la risposta. | 5 He who obeys a command will meet no harm, and the mind of a wise man will know the time and way. |
| 6 Per ogni cosa v'è il suo tempo e la sua opportunità; ma è di grande afflizione per l'uomo | 6 For every matter has its time and way, although man's trouble lies heavy upon him. |
| 7 l'ignorare il passato e non poter avere nessuna notizia dell'avvenire. | 7 For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be? |
| 8 Non è in potere dell'uomo trattener lo spirito, non ha autorità sul giorno della morte, non gli è permesso di riposare in tempo di guerra, e l'empietà non salverà l'empio. | 8 No man has power to retain the spirit, or authority over the day of death; there is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it. |
| 9 Tutte queste cose ho io considerate, applicando la mia mente a tutte le opere che si fanno sotto il sole. Qualche volta un uomo domina sugli altri per sua sventura. | 9 All this I observed while applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while man lords it over man to his hurt. |
| 10 Ho visti degli empi onorati di sepoltura, i quali, quando erauo ancora vivi, stavano nel luogo santo, ed eran lodati nella città come dediti ad opere sante. Ma anche questo è vanità. | 10 Then I saw the wicked buried; they used to go in and out of the holy place, and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity. |
| 11 Perchè la sentenza non è data subito contro i cattivi, senza alcun timore i figli degli uomini commettono il male. | 11 Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil. |
| 12 Ma dall'essere il peccatore tollerato con pazienza, anche dopo che ha fatto cento volte il male, io ho compreso che il bene sarà riserbato a quelli che temono Dio e lo riveriscono, | 12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him; |
| 13 e che non avrà bene l'empio, che non saran prolungati i suoi giorni, ma passeranno come ombra quelli che non temono la faccia del Signore. | 13 but it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God. |
| 14 V'è pure un'altra vanità che avviene sopra la terra: vi son dei giusti a cui toccano i mali, come se avessero operato da empi, e vi son degli empi tanto tranquilli, come se avessero operato da giusti; ma anche questo io la giudico vanissima cosa. | 14 There is a vanity which takes place on earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. |
| 15 Io dunque ho lodata l'allegria, perchè l'uomo non ha altro bene sotto il sole, se non mangiare e bere e star contento, e questo solo può ritrarre dalle sue fatiche nel tempo di vita a lui conceduta sotto il sole da Dio. | 15 And I commend enjoyment, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink, and enjoy himself, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of life which God gives him under the sun. |
| 16 Or io applicai la mia mente per imparar la sapienza e capire il gran da fare che domina la terra: vi son degli uomini che non chiudono gli occhi nè giorno nè notte per dormire. | 16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night one's eyes see sleep; |
| 17 E compresi che di tutte le opere di Dio che si fanno sotto il sole, l'uomo non può trovare nessuna spiegazione, e quanto piu s'affanna a cercarla tanto meno la trova, e se anche il sapiente dicesse di sapere non potrà scoprir niente. | 17 then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out; even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out. |
