1 Siccome il Signore voleva rapire Elia al cielo in un turbine, Elia ed Eliseo partirono da Galgala.	1 When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, he and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.
2 Ed Elia disse ad Eliseo: « Fermati qui, perchè il Signore mi manda fino a Betel ». Ma Eliseo gli rispose: « Viva il Signore e viva l'anima tua! Io non ti lascerò ». Quando furono discesi a Betel,	2 "Stay here, please," Elijah said to Elisha. "The LORD has sent me on to Bethel." "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live," Elisha replied, "I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel,
3 uscirono incontro ad Eliseo i figli dei profeti ch'erano a Betel, e gli dissero: « Non sai tu che oggi il Signore ti toglierà il tuo padrone? » Egli rispose: « Tacete: lo so anch'io! »	3 where the guild prophets went out to Elisha and asked him, "Do you know that the LORD will take your master from over you today?" "Yes, I know it," he replied. "Keep still."
4 Elia disse poi ad Eliseo: « Fermati qui, perchè il Signore mi manda a Gerico ». Ma Eliseo disse: « Viva il Signore e viva l'anima tua! Io non ti lascerò ». Giunti che furono a Gerico,	4 Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here, please, Elisha, for the LORD has sent me on to Jericho." "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live," Elisha replied, "I will not leave you."
5 i figli dei profeti che erano a Gerico, si accostarono ad Eliseo e gli dissero: « Non sai tu che oggi il Signore ti toglierà il tuo padrone? » Egli disse: « Tacete, lo so anch'io! »	5 They went on to Jericho, where the guild prophets approached Elisha and asked him, "Do you know that the LORD will take your master from over you today?" "Yes, I know it," he replied. "Keep still."
6 Poi Elia gli disse: «Fermati qui, perchè il Signore mi manda fino al Giordano ». Ma egli rispose: « Viva il Signore e viva l'anima tua! Non ti lascerò ». Allora andarono tutt'e due insieme,	6 Elijah said to Elisha, "Please stay here; the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan." "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live," Elisha replied, "I will not leave you." And so the two went on together.
7 seguiti da cinquanta uomini dei figli dei profeti che si fermarono di faccia a loro da lontano. Giunti ambedue sulla riva del Giordano,	7 Fifty of the guild prophets followed, and when the two stopped at the Jordan, stood facing them at a distance.
8 Elia prese il suo mantello, lo arrotolò, e percosse le acque, le quali si divisero in due parti, e tutt'e due passarono per l'asciutto.	8 Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up and struck the water, which divided, and both crossed over on dry ground.
9 Passati che furono, Elia disse ad Eliseo: « Chiedi ciò che desideri che io ti faccia, avanti che io ti sia tolto ». Eliseo disse: « Chiedo che si raddoppi in me il tuo spirito ».	9 When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask for whatever I may do for you, before I am taken from you." Elisha answered, "May I receive a double portion of your spirit."
10 Elia rispose: « Tu hai domandato una cosa difficile; tuttavia, se tu mi vedrai quando ti sarò tolto, avrai quello che hai domandato, ma se non mi vedrai, non l'avrai ».	10 "You have asked something that is not easy," he replied. "Still, if you see me taken up from you, your wish will be granted; otherwise not."
11 Mentre seguitavano a camminare e a discorrere insieme, ecco un cocchio di fuoco e dei cavalli di fuoco a separarli l'un dall'altro. Elia salì al cielo in un turbine,	11 As they walked on conversing, a flaming chariot and flaming horses came between them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
12 mentre Eliseo stava a guardare e gridava: « Padre mio, padre mio, cocchio d'Israele e suo duce! » Quando non lo vide più, prese le sue vesti e le stracciò in due parti.	12 When Elisha saw it happen he cried out, "My father! my father! Israel's chariots and drivers!" But when he could no longer see him, Elisha gripped his own garment and tore it in two.
13 Poi raccolse il mantello d'Elia, che gli era caduto, e tornato indietro si fermò sulla riva del Giordano.	13 Then he picked up Elijah's mantle which had fallen from him, and went back and stood at the bank of the Jordan.
14 Col mantello d'Elia, a lui caduto, percosse le acque; ma esse non si divisero. Allora egli disse: « Dov'è ora il Dio d'Elia? » Percosse le acque ed esse si divisero di qua e di là ed Eliseo passò.	14 Wielding the mantle which had fallen from Elijah, he struck the water in his turn and said, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" When Elisha struck the water it divided and he crossed over.
15 Avendo ciò veduto i figli dei profeti che erano a Gerico, di faccia, esclamarono: « Lo spirito d'Elia s'è posato sopra Eliseo! » E venutigli incontro, si prostrarono davanti a lui fino a terra.	15 The guild prophets in Jericho, who were on the other side, saw him and said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." They went to meet him, bowing to the ground before him.
16 E gli dissero: « Ecco, coi tuoi servi ci sono cinquanta uomini forti che possono andare a cercar il tuo padrone, se mai lo Spirito del Signore lo avesse preso e gettato su qualche monte, o in qualche valle ». Eliseo rispose: « Non li mandate ».	16 "Among your servants are fifty brave men," they said. "Let them go in search of your master. Perhaps the spirit of the LORD has carried him away to some mountain or some valley." "Do not send them," he answered.
17 Ma essi insistettero fino a tanto che egli non si arrese e disse: « Mandate ». Essi mandarono i cinquanta uomini, i quali cercarono per tre giorni senza averlo trovato.	17 However, they kept urging him, until he was embarrassed and said, "Send them." So they sent the fifty men, who searched for three days without finding him.
18 Allora tornarono da Eliseo che s'era fermato in Gerico, il quale disse loro: « Non ve l 'avevo detto io: non mandate? »	18 When they returned to Elisha in Jericho, where he was staying, he said to them, "Did I not tell you not to go?"
19 La gente della città disse ad Eliseo: « Ecco, il soggiorno di questa città è ottimo, come tu stesso, o signore, vedi, ma le acque son pessime e la terra è sterile ».	19 Once the inhabitants of the city complained to Elisha, "The site of the city is fine indeed, as my lord can see, but the water is bad and the land unfruitful."
20 Ed egli disse: « Portatemi un vaso nuovo e mettetevi del sale ». Portato che gliel'ebbero,	20 "Bring me a new bowl," Elisha said, "and put salt into it." When they had brought it to him,
21 egli andò alla sorgente delle acque, e, gettatovi del sale, disse: « Queste cose dice il Signore: Ho rese sane queste acque e non ne verrà più nè morte nè sterilità ».	21 he went out to the spring and threw salt into it, saying, "Thus says the LORD, 'I have purified this water. Never again shall death or miscarriage spring from it.'"
22 E quelle acque furon rese sane fino a questo giorno, secondo le parole dette da Eliseo.	22 And the water has stayed pure even to this day, just as Elisha prophesied.
23 Di là egli salì a Betel. Or mentre saliva per la via, dei ragazzetti, usciti dalla città, lo beffeggiavano, dicendo: « Sali, o calvo; sali, o calvo ».	23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. While he was on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him. "Go up, baldhead," they shouted, "go up, baldhead!"
24 Egli, voltatosi a guardarli, li maledisse nel nome del Signore; e due orsi usciti dal bosco sbranarono quarantadue di quei ragazzi.	24 The prophet turned and saw them, and he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two she-bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the children to pieces.
25 Di là egli andò sul monte Carmelo, e poi tornò a Samaria.	25 From there he went to Mount Carmel, and thence he returned to Samaria.
