| 1 Or Hiram re di Tiro, essendo stato in ogni tempo amico di David, mandò i suoi servi a Salomone, quando seppe che egli era stato unto re in luogo di suo padre. | 1 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, when he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father; for Hiram always loved David. |
| 2 E Salomone mandò a dire a Hiram: | 2 And Solomon sent word to Hiram, |
| 3 « Tu sai che mio padre non potè, come desiderava, edificare una casa al nome del Signore Dio suo, a causa delle guerre che dovette combattere da ogni parte, finché il Signore non pose i suoi nemici sotto i suoi piedi. | 3 "You know that David my father could not build a house for the name of the LORD his God because of the warfare with which his enemies surrounded him, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet. |
| 4 Ma ora il Signore m'ha dato riposo da ogni parte, e non ho nè avversario nè sventure, | 4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor misfortune. |
| 5 quindi ho in animo di fabbricare un tempio al nome del Signore Dio mio, come dichiarò il Signore a David mio padre, con queste parole: Sarà il tuo figliolo, che io metterò sul trono al tuo posto, quello che fabbricherà una casa al mio nome. | 5 And so I purpose to build a house for the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD said to David my father, 'Your son, whom I will set upon your throne in your place, shall build the house for my name.' |
| 6 Ordina dunque ai tuoi servi di tagliarmi dei cedri del Libano: i miei servi staranno insieme coi tuoi, per i quali io darò la mercede che tu chiederai, perchè tu sai bene che nel mio popolo non v'è nessuno che sappia tagliare il legname come i Sidonii ». | 6 Now therefore command that cedars of Lebanon be cut for me; and my servants will join your servants, and I will pay you for your servants such wages as you set; for you know that there is no one among us who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians." |
| 7 Quando Hiram intese le parole di Salomone, ne ebbe gran piacere, e disse: « Benedetto sia oggi il Signore Dio, il quale ha dato a David un figlio sapientissimo per regnare sopra questo gran popolo ». | 7 When Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly, and said, "Blessed be the LORD this day, who has given to David a wise son to be over this great people." |
| 8 Poi Hiram mandò a dire a Salomone: « Ho inteso tutto quello che mi chiedi, e farò tutto quello che desideri, riguardo ai legnami di cedro e di abete; | 8 And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, "I have heard the message which you have sent to me; I am ready to do all you desire in the matter of cedar and cypress timber. |
| 9 miei servi li trasporteranno dal Libano al mare, poi io li farò giungere per mare su zattere fino al luogo che tu m'indicherai, ove li farò posare, e tu li prenderai; tu poi mi fornirai tutto il necessario per il vitto della mia casa ». | 9 My servants shall bring it down to the sea from Lebanon; and I will make it into rafts to go by sea to the place you direct, and I will have them broken up there, and you shall receive it; and you shall meet my wishes by providing food for my household." |
| 10 Così Hiram dava a Salomone i legnami di cedro e di abete desiderati, | 10 So Hiram supplied Solomon with all the timber of cedar and cypress that he desired, |
| 11 e Salomone dava ad Hiram venti mila cori di grano pel mantenimento della sua casa, e venti cori di olio finissimo: tutto questo, Salomone lo dava ad Hiram ogni anno. | 11 while Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand cors of wheat as food for his household, and twenty thousand cors of beaten oil. Solomon gave this to Hiram year by year. |
| 12 Avendo il Signore data a Salomone la sapienza, come gli aveva promesso, vi era pace tra Hiram e Salomone e fecero tutt'e due alleanza. | 12 And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and the two of them made a treaty. |
| 13 Il re Salomone scelse operai da tutto Israele, in numero di trenta mila, | 13 King Solomon raised a levy of forced labor out of all Israel; and the levy numbered thirty thousand men. |
| 14 e ne mandava al Libano, per turno, dieci mila al mese, facendoli cosi restar per due mesi alle loro case. L'incarico di scegliere gli operai fu dato ad Adoniram. | 14 And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month in relays; they would be a month in Lebanon and two months at home; Adoniram was in charge of the levy. |
| 15 Salomone aveva poi settanta mila uomini che portavano pesi, ottanta mila che tagliavano pietre sulla montagna; | 15 Solomon also had seventy thousand burden-bearers and eighty thousand hewers of stone in the hill country, |
| 16 senza contare quelli che presiedevano ai vari lavori, che erano tremila trecento, e comandavano al popolo e a quelli che facevano il lavoro. | 16 besides Solomon's three thousand three hundred chief officers who were over the work, who had charge of the people who carried on the work. |
| 17 Il re ordinò che fossero prese pietre grandi, pietre scelte e riquadrate per i fondamenti del tempio. | 17 At the king's command, they quarried out great, costly stones in order to lay the foundation of the house with dressed stones. |
| 18 I muratori di Salomone, e i muratori d'Hiram le tagliarono, e quelli di Giblos prepararono il legname e le pietre per edificare la casa. | 18 So Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the men of Gebal did the hewing and prepared the timber and the stone to build the house. |
