| 1 Consolidato il regno nelle sue mani, Salomone s'imparentò con Faraone re d'Egitto, sposandone la figlia, che tenne nella città di David, finché non ebbe finito d'edificare la sua casa, la casa del Signore e le mura di cinta di Gerusalemme. | 1 Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt; he took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had finished building his own house and the house of the LORD and the wall around Jerusalem. |
| 2 Il popolo allora immolava sopra gli alti luoghi, perchè non era stato ancor edificato il tempio al nome del Signore, | 2 The people were sacrificing at the high places, however, because no house had yet been built for the name of the LORD. |
| 3 quindi Salomone, pure amando il Sire e camminando secondo i precetti di David suo padre, immolava sopra gli alti luoghi e vi bruciava incensi. | 3 Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father; only, he sacrificed and burnt incense at the high places. |
| 4 Egli dunque andò a Gabaon ad offrirvi sacrifizi, essendo quello l'alto luogo più venerato; Salomone offerse mille vittime in olocausto sopra quell'altare di Gabaon. | 4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings upon that altar. |
| 5 Il Signore apparve la notte in sogno a Salomone e gli disse: « Chiedi quello che vuoi che io ti doni ». | 5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask what I shall give you." |
| 6 Salomone disse: « Tu usasti verso il tuo servo David, mio padre, una grande misericordia, e siccome egli camminò al tuo cospetto nella verità e nella giustizia e nella rettitudine del cuore verso di te, gli conservasti la tua grande misericordia, e gli desti un figlio che sedesse sopra il suo trono, come oggi avviene. | 6 And Solomon said, "Thou hast shown great and steadfast love to thy servant David my father, because he walked before thee in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward thee; and thou hast kept for him this great and steadfast love, and hast given him a son to sit on his throne this day. |
| 7 Ed ora, Signore Dio, tu hai fatto regnare il tuo servo in luogo di David mio padre; ma io sono un piccolo fanciullo e non so nè uscire nè entrare. | 7 And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. |
| 8 Inoltre il tuo servo è in mezzo al popolo che tu hai eletto, popolo infinito, che non può esser calcolato nè contato, da quant'è numeroso. | 8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people whom thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered or counted for multitude. |
| 9 Da dunque al tuo servo un cuor docile, affinchè possa giudicare il tuo popolo e discernere tra il bene e il male. E chi potrebbe giudicare questo popolo, questo popolo così immenso? » | 9 Give thy servant therefore an understanding mind to govern thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to govern this thy great people?" |
| 10 Piacquero al Signore le parole con cui Salomone aveva fatta tal richiesta. | 10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. |
| 11 E il Signore disse a Salomone: « Siccome hai chiesto questa cosa, e, senza domandare per te lunga vita o ricchezze o la vita dei tuoi nemici, hai chiesto per te la sapienza per discernere il giusto, | 11 And God said to him, "Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, |
| 12 ecco ti ho fatto secondo le tue parole e ti ho dato un cuore così saggio e intelligente che uno simile a te non c'è mai stato nè mai ci sarà dopo di te. | 12 behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. |
| 13 Oltre a questo io ti do anche quelle cose che tu non hai domandate, cioè le ricchezze e la gloria, e tali che nessuno sia stato simile a te fra i re in tutti i tempi passati; | 13 I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days. |
| 14 e se tu camminerai nelle mie vie, osservando i miei precetti e i miei comandamenti, come camminò tuo padre, io prolungherò i tuoi giorni ». | 14 And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days." |
| 15 Svegliatosi Salomone, comprese che era un sogno. Ritornato a Gerusalemme, si presentò dinanzi all'arca dell'alleanza del Signore e offerse olocausti e immolò vittime pacifiche e fece un gran convito a tutti i suoi servi. | 15 And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants. |
| 16 Vennero allora dal re due donne di mala vita, e si presentarono dinanzi a lui. | 16 Then two harlots came to the king, and stood before him. |
| 17 Una di esse disse: « Ti scongiuro, o mio signore! Abitando in una stessa casa con questa donna, io partorii presso di lei nella camera; | 17 The one woman said, "Oh, my lord, this woman and I dwell in the same house; and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house. |
| 18 il terzo giorno dopo ch'ebbi partorito io, partorì anche lei. Noi stavamo insieme, e nessun altro, fuori di noi due, era con noi in quella casa. | 18 Then on the third day after I was delivered, this woman also gave birth; and we were alone; there was no one else with us in the house, only we two were in the house. |
| 19 Or essendo morto durante la notte il figlio di questa donna, da lei soffocato nel dormire, | 19 And this woman's son died in the night, because she lay on it. |
| 20 essa, alzatasi nel silenzio del cuor della notte, prese il mio figlio d'accanto a me tua serva, che ero addormentata, e lo pose sul suo seno, e pose in seno a me il suo figlio morto. | 20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your maidservant slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom. |
| 21 Levatami la mattina per allattare il mio figlio, lo vidi morto; ma fissandolo più attentamente a giorno chiaro, riconobbi che non era il mio figlio da me partorito ». | 21 When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, it was dead; but when I looked at it closely in the morning, behold, it was not the child that I had borne." |
| 22 E l'altra donna diceva: « La cosa non sta come tu dici: è morto il tuo figlio, e il mio è vivo ». E quella a replicarle contro: « Tu mentisci: il mio figlio è vivo, e il tuo è morto ». E in questo modo altercavano davanti al re. | 22 But the other woman said, "No, the living child is mine, and the dead child is yours." The first said, "No, the dead child is yours, and the living child is mine." Thus they spoke before the king. |
| 23 Allora il re disse: « Questa dice: Il mio figlio è vivo, il tuo è morto; quella risponde: No: il tuo figlio è morto, il mio è vivo. | 23 Then the king said, "The one says, 'This is my son that is alive, and your son is dead'; and the other says, 'No; but your son is dead, and my son is the living one.'" |
| 24 Allora, seguitò a dire il re, portatemi una spada ». Portata che fu la spada dinanzi re, disse: | 24 And the king said, "Bring me a sword." So a sword was brought before the king. |
| 25 Dividete in due il bambino vivo e datene metà all'una e metà all'altra ». | 25 And the king said, "Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other." |
| 26 Allora la donna di cui era il figlio vivo, sentendo le viscere commosse verso il suo figlio, disse al re: « Per pietà, o signore, date a lei il bambino vivo, non l'uccidete! ». L'altra invece diceva: « Non deve toccare nè a me nè a te: sia diviso ». | 26 Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned for her son, "Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means slay it." But the other said, "It shall be neither mine nor yours; divide it." |
| 27 Il re allora diede la sua risposta, dicendo: « Date alla prima il bambino vivo, senza ucciderlo, perchè essa ne è la madre ». | 27 Then the king answered and said, "Give the living child to the first woman, and by no means slay it; she is its mother." |
| 28 Tutto Israele, saputo il giudizio che il re aveva pronunziato, temette il re, vedendo che la sapienza di Dio era in lui per render giustizia. | 28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had rendered; and they stood in awe of the king, because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him, to render justice. |
