Giosuè 9

1 - Quando vennero a cognizione di questi avvenimenti i re tutti al di qua del Giordano, che abitavano fra le montagne, nelle pianure e sulla spiaggia del Gran Mare, come pure quelli che abitavano presso il Libano, l'Eteo, l'Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferezeo, l'Eveo ed il Jebuseo,	1 And when these things were heard, all the kings across the Jordan, who lived among the mountains and plains, along the coastline and shores of the great sea, also those who were living near Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,
2 si riunirono tutti per combattere contro Giosuè ed Israele con una sola volontà e un solo pensiero.	2 gathered themselves together, so that they might fight against Joshua and Israel, with one mind and with the same resolve.
3 Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon all'udire quanto Giosuè aveva fatto contro Gerico e Ai,	3 But those who were living in Gibeon, hearing all that Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
4 ebbero l'astuzia di prendere con sè viveri e di caricare sui loro asini vecchi sacchi, con otri di vino logore e ricucite;	4 planning cleverly, took for themselves provisions, placing old sacks upon their donkeys, and wineskins that had torn and been sewed up,
5 [si misero ai piedi] calzari stravecchi, che in segno di loro vetustà eran tutti rappezzati, indossarono vecchi abiti e portando come viatico pane stantio e ridotto in briciole,	5 and having very old shoes, which had been sewn with patches indicating their age, and being clothed in old garments, having also loaves, which they carried as food for the journey, which were hard and broken into pieces.
6 andarono da Giosuè, che allora si trovava nell'accampamento di Galgala, e dissero a lui e a tutto Israele: «Noi veniamo da un paese lontano desiderosi di stringere alleanza con voi». Gli uomini d'Israele risposero loro:	6 And they traveled to Joshua, who at that time was staying in the camp at Gilgal. And they said to him, and to all of Israel with him, “We have come from a far away land, desiring to make peace with you.” And the sons of Israel responded to them, and said,
7 «Forse voi abitate nella terra che ci è stata data in sorte e allora non potremo stringere alleanza con voi».	7 “Perhaps instead, you live in the land which ought to be ours by lot, and we would be unable to form a pact with you.”
8 Ed essi a Giosuè: «Noi siamo servi tuoi», dissero. Al che Giosuè soggiunse: «Chi siete voi? E donde venite?».	8 But they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them: “But who are you? And where are you from?”
9 Ed essi: «Da un paese molto lontano vennero i servi tuoi nel nome del Signore Dio tuo, perchè abbiamo inteso la fama della sua potenza e tutto ciò che fece in Egitto,	9 They responded: “Your servants have arrived, from a very far away land, in the name of the Lord, your God. For we have heard about the fame of his power, all the things that he has done in Egypt,
10 e ai due re Amorrei che stavano al di là del Giordano, Seon re di Esebon e Og re di Basan che stava in Astarot.	10 and to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan: Sihon, the king of Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
11 Gli anziani e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese ci dissero: - Prendete con voi cibi per il lungo viaggio, andate loro incontro e dite: "Noi siamo vostri servi; fate alleanza con noi". -	11 And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land, have said to us: ‘Take in hand provisions for the very long journey, and meet with them, and say: We are your servants; form a pact with us.’
12 Ecco i pani; quando partimmo dalle nostre case per venire da voi, essi eran caldi e ora son divenuti secchi e ridotti in briciole tanto son vecchi.	12 Lo, the loaves were taken up warm when we departed from our houses, so that we might come to you. Now they have become dry and broken, due to age.
13 Avevamo riempito otri nuove di vino e ora son rotte e perdono; le vesti ed i calzari, di cui vestiamo e che abbiamo ai piedi son logorati e quasi consunti per la gran lunghezza del viaggio».	13 These wineskins were new when we filled them, now they are torn and broken. The garments we are wearing, and the shoes we have on our feet, due to the great length of the distance, have become worn and are nearly consumed.”
14 Presero [gli Israeliti] dei loro cibi senza consultare il Signore	14 And so they accepted this, because of their provisions, and they did not consult the mouth of the Lord.
15 e Giosuè fece la pace con loro e strinse alleanza promettendo che non li avrebbe uccisi. Lo stesso giuramento fecero i principi del popolo.	15 And Joshua made peace with them, and entering into a pact, he promised that they would not be put to death. The leaders of the multitude also swore to them.
16 Tre giorni dopo che ebbero stretta l'alleanza intesero che abitavano vicino e che avrebbero vissuto in mezzo a loro.	16 Then, three days after the pact was formed, they heard that they lived in the vicinity, and that they would soon be among them.
17 Levarono l'accampamento i figli d'Israele e al terzo giorno vennero alle loro città, chiamate Gabaon, Cafira, Berot e Cariatiarim,	17 And so the sons of Israel moved the camp, and they arrived at their cities on the third day, those which are called: Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
18 ma non li uccisero, perchè i principi del popolo lo avevan giurato nel nome del Signore Dio d'Israele. Perciò tutta la moltitudine mormorò contro i principi,	18 And they did not strike them, because the leaders of the multitude had sworn to them in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. And so all of the common people murmured against the leaders.
19 i quali risposero: «Noi abbiamo giurato loro in nome del Signore Dio di Israele e perciò non li possiamo uccidere;	19 And they responded to them: “We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, and for that reason, we are not able to touch them.
20 ma li tratteremo così: Li lasceremo in vita per non attirare sopra di noi l'ira del Signore, qualora fossimo spergiuri;	20 But we shall do this to them: Certainly, let them be preserved so that they may live, lest the wrath of the Lord be stirred up against us, since we would have sworn falsely.
21 ma vivranno in modo da essere utili a tutta la massa del popolo tagliando la legna e portando l'acqua». Avendo essi detto ciò,	21 But though they live, let them serve the entire multitude by cutting wood and carrying water.” And while they were discussing these things,
22 Giosuè fece chiamare i Gabaoniti e disse loro: «Perchè avete voluto ingannarci ricorrendo alla frode col dire: - Abitiamo lontano da voi, - mentre state in mezzo a noi?	22 Joshua called the Gibeonites, and he said to them: “Why would you be willing to deceive us by fraud, saying, ‘We live very far away from you,’ when you are in our midst?
23 Perciò voi resterete sotto la maledizione e non mancherà mai fra i vostri discendenti chi taglierà la legna e porterà l'acqua nella casa del mio Dio».	23 Therefore, you shall be under a curse, and your stock shall not cease to be cutters of wood and carriers of water, into the house of my God.”
24 Al che essi risposero: «A noi, tuoi servi, fu detto che il Signore Dio tuo avea promesso a Mosè suo servo di dare in vostro potere tutto il paese e disperdere tutti gli abitanti; perciò abbiamo avuto tanto timore e mossi dalla paura di voi abbiamo provveduto alla nostra vita adottando un tal piano.	24 And they responded: “It was reported to us, your servants, that the Lord your God had promised his servant Moses that he would give you the entire land, and that he would destroy all its inhabitants. Therefore, we were very afraid, and we made a provision for our lives, compelled by the dread of you, and we undertook this counsel.
25 Ora siamo nelle tue mani; fa' di noi quello che ti sembra buono e giusto».	25 And now we are in your hand. Act toward us as it seems good and right to you.”
26 Giosuè fece come aveva detto e li liberò dalle mani dei figli d'Israele, perchè non fossero uccisi	26 Therefore, Joshua did just as he had said, and he freed them from the hand of the sons of Israel, so that they would not be killed.
27 e in quello stesso giorno decretò che fossero addetti al servizio di tutto il popolo e dell'altare del Signore col tagliar la legna e col portare fino ai nostri giorni l'acqua nel luogo che il Signore si sarebbe eletto.	27 And he decreed on that day, that they would be in the ministry of all the people and of the altar of the Lord, cutting wood and carrying water, even until this present time, in the place which the Lord had chosen.
