Giosuè 9

1 - Quando vennero a cognizione di questi avvenimenti i re tutti al di qua del Giordano, che abitavano fra le montagne, nelle pianure e sulla spiaggia del Gran Mare, come pure quelli che abitavano presso il Libano, l'Eteo, l'Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferezeo, l'Eveo ed il Jebuseo,	1 When the news reached the kings west of the Jordan, in the mountain regions and in the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea as far as Lebanon: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites,
2 si riunirono tutti per combattere contro Giosuè ed Israele con una sola volontà e un solo pensiero.	2 they all formed an alliance to launch a common attack against Joshua and Israel.
3 Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon all'udire quanto Giosuè aveva fatto contro Gerico e Ai,	3 On learning what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, the inhabitants of Gibeon
4 ebbero l'astuzia di prendere con sè viveri e di caricare sui loro asini vecchi sacchi, con otri di vino logore e ricucite;	4 put into effect a device of their own. They chose provisions for a journey, making use of old sacks for their asses, and old wineskins, torn and mended.
5 [si misero ai piedi] calzari stravecchi, che in segno di loro vetustà eran tutti rappezzati, indossarono vecchi abiti e portando come viatico pane stantio e ridotto in briciole,	5 They wore old, patched sandals and shabby garments; and all the bread they took was dry and crumbly.
6 andarono da Giosuè, che allora si trovava nell'accampamento di Galgala, e dissero a lui e a tutto Israele: «Noi veniamo da un paese lontano desiderosi di stringere alleanza con voi». Gli uomini d'Israele risposero loro:	6 Thus they journeyed to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, where they said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant land to propose that you make an alliance with us."
7 «Forse voi abitate nella terra che ci è stata data in sorte e allora non potremo stringere alleanza con voi».	7 But the men of Israel replied to the Hivites, "You may be living in land that is ours. How, then, can we make an alliance with you?"
8 Ed essi a Giosuè: «Noi siamo servi tuoi», dissero. Al che Giosuè soggiunse: «Chi siete voi? E donde venite?».	8 But they answered Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua asked them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?"
9 Ed essi: «Da un paese molto lontano vennero i servi tuoi nel nome del Signore Dio tuo, perchè abbiamo inteso la fama della sua potenza e tutto ciò che fece in Egitto,	9 They answered him, "Your servants have come from a far-off land, because of the fame of the LORD, your God. For we have heard reports of all that he did in Egypt
10 e ai due re Amorrei che stavano al di là del Giordano, Seon re di Esebon e Og re di Basan che stava in Astarot.	10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth.
11 Gli anziani e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese ci dissero: - Prendete con voi cibi per il lungo viaggio, andate loro incontro e dite: "Noi siamo vostri servi; fate alleanza con noi". -	11 So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take along provisions for the journey and go to meet them. Say to them: We are your servants; we propose that you make an alliance with us.'
12 Ecco i pani; quando partimmo dalle nostre case per venire da voi, essi eran caldi e ora son divenuti secchi e ridotti in briciole tanto son vecchi.	12 This bread of ours was still warm when we brought it from home as provisions the day we left to come to you, but now it is dry and crumbled.
13 Avevamo riempito otri nuove di vino e ora son rotte e perdono; le vesti ed i calzari, di cui vestiamo e che abbiamo ai piedi son logorati e quasi consunti per la gran lunghezza del viaggio».	13 Here are our wineskins, which were new when we filled them, but now they are torn. Look at our garments and sandals, which are worn out from the very long journey."
14 Presero [gli Israeliti] dei loro cibi senza consultare il Signore	14 Then the Israelite princes partook of their provisions, without seeking the advice of the LORD.
15 e Giosuè fece la pace con loro e strinse alleanza promettendo che non li avrebbe uccisi. Lo stesso giuramento fecero i principi del popolo.	15 So Joshua made an alliance with them and entered into an agreement to spare them, which the princes of the community sealed with an oath.
16 Tre giorni dopo che ebbero stretta l'alleanza intesero che abitavano vicino e che avrebbero vissuto in mezzo a loro.	16 Three days after the agreement was entered into, the Israelites learned that these people were from nearby, and would be living in Israel.
17 Levarono l'accampamento i figli d'Israele e al terzo giorno vennero alle loro città, chiamate Gabaon, Cafira, Berot e Cariatiarim,	17 The third day on the road, the Israelites came to their cities of Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim,
18 ma non li uccisero, perchè i principi del popolo lo avevan giurato nel nome del Signore Dio d'Israele. Perciò tutta la moltitudine mormorò contro i principi,	18 but did not attack them, because the princes of the community had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. When the entire community grumbled against the princes,
19 i quali risposero: «Noi abbiamo giurato loro in nome del Signore Dio di Israele e perciò non li possiamo uccidere;	19 these all remonstrated with the people, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and so we cannot harm them.
20 ma li tratteremo così: Li lasceremo in vita per non attirare sopra di noi l'ira del Signore, qualora fossimo spergiuri;	20 Let us therefore spare their lives and so deal with them that we shall not be punished for the oath we have sworn to them."
21 ma vivranno in modo da essere utili a tutta la massa del popolo tagliando la legna e portando l'acqua». Avendo essi detto ciò,	21 Thus the princes recommended that they be let live, as hewers of wood and drawers of water for the entire community; and the community did as the princes advised them.
22 Giosuè fece chiamare i Gabaoniti e disse loro: «Perchè avete voluto ingannarci ricorrendo alla frode col dire: - Abitiamo lontano da voi, - mentre state in mezzo a noi?	22 Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them, "Why did you lie to us and say that you lived at a great distance from us, when you will be living in our very midst?
23 Perciò voi resterete sotto la maledizione e non mancherà mai fra i vostri discendenti chi taglierà la legna e porterà l'acqua nella casa del mio Dio».	23 For this are you accursed: every one of you shall always be a slave (hewers of wood and drawers of water) for the house of my God."
24 Al che essi risposero: «A noi, tuoi servi, fu detto che il Signore Dio tuo avea promesso a Mosè suo servo di dare in vostro potere tutto il paese e disperdere tutti gli abitanti; perciò abbiamo avuto tanto timore e mossi dalla paura di voi abbiamo provveduto alla nostra vita adottando un tal piano.	24 They answered Joshua, "Your servants were fully informed of how the LORD, your God, commanded his servant Moses that you be given the entire land and that all its inhabitants be destroyed before you. Since, therefore, at your advance, we were in great fear for our lives, we acted as we did.
25 Ora siamo nelle tue mani; fa' di noi quello che ti sembra buono e giusto».	25 And now that we are in your power, do with us what you think fit and right."
26 Giosuè fece come aveva detto e li liberò dalle mani dei figli d'Israele, perchè non fossero uccisi	26 Joshua did what he had decided: while he saved them from being killed by the Israelites,
27 e in quello stesso giorno decretò che fossero addetti al servizio di tutto il popolo e dell'altare del Signore col tagliar la legna e col portare fino ai nostri giorni l'acqua nel luogo che il Signore si sarebbe eletto.	27 at the same time he made them, as they still are, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the community and for the altar of the LORD, in the place of the LORD'S choice.
