| 1 - Paolo, fissato lo sguardo sul Sinedrio, disse: «Fratelli, fino a questo giorno io son vissuto dinanzi a Dio in tutta buona coscienza». | 1 And Paul, looking intently at the council, said, "Brethren, I have lived before God in all good conscience up to this day." |
| 2 Qui, il sommo sacerdote Anania comandò a' più vicini che lo percotessero sulla bocca. | 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. |
| 3 Allora Paolo gli disse: «Iddio percoterà te, muraglia imbiancata! Tu siedi a giudicarmi secondo la legge, e, violando la legge, ordini ch'io sia percosso?». | 3 Then Paul said to him, "God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?" |
| 4 Quelli che stavano intorno gli dissero: «Oltraggi tu il sommo sacerdote di Dio?». | 4 Those who stood by said, "Would you revile God's high priest?" |
| 5 E Paolo: «Fratelli, io non sapevo esser lui il sommo sacerdote; chè sta scritto: "Non oltraggiare il principe del tuo popolo"». | 5 And Paul said, "I did not know, brethren, that he was the high priest; for it is written, 'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'" |
| 6 Paolo, sapendo che una parte era di Sadducei, e l'altra di Farisei, nel Sinedrio esclamò: «Fratelli, io son Fariseo, figlio di Farisei, e son chiamato in giudizio per la speranza nella risurrezione dei morti!». | 6 But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, "Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead I am on trial." |
| 7 Com'ebbe detto questo, nacque un contrasto tra Farisei e Sadducei, e l'assemblea si divise. | 7 And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees; and the assembly was divided. |
| 8 I Sadducei infatti dicono non esserci risurrezione, nè angelo, nè spirito, mentre i Farisei affermano ambedue le cose. | 8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. |
| 9 E si fece un gran vociare. Alcuni del partito de' Farisei si levaron su a protestare, gridando: «Noi non troviamo alcun male in quest'uomo; e se uno spirito o un angelo gli avesse parlato?». | 9 Then a great clamor arose; and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and contended, "We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?" |
| 10 Il tumulto cresceva; e il tribuno, temendo che Paolo fosse fatto da loro a pezzi, comandò ai soldati che scendessero a prenderlo in mezzo e condurlo in fortezza. | 10 And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks. |
| 11 La notte seguente, il Signore fu dinanzi a lui e gli disse: «Sii di buon animo; come m'hai reso testimonianza in Gerusalemme, così bisogna che tu me la renda anche in Roma». | 11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Take courage, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must bear witness also at Rome." |
| 12 Quando fu giorno, alcuni Giudei ordirono una congiura, facendo voto, con imprecazioni, di non toccar cibo nè bevanda sino a che non avessero ucciso Paolo. | 12 When it was day, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. |
| 13 Ed eran più di quaranta coloro che avevan fatta questa congiura. | 13 There were more than forty who made this conspiracy. |
| 14 Essi si recarono dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani, dicendo: «Noi abbiam fatto voto, con imprecazione, di non prender cibo sino a quando non abbiamo ucciso Paolo. | 14 And they went to the chief priests and elders, and said, "We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul. |
| 15 Voi dunque, col Sinedrio, fate sapere al tribuno che lo meni giù da voi, come se voleste esaminarlo più a fondo, e noi, pronti, prima che arrivi da voi, l'uccideremo». | 15 You therefore, along with the council, give notice now to the tribune to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case more exactly. And we are ready to kill him before he comes near." |
| 16 Ma un figliuolo della sorella di Paolo, risaputo di questa insidia, andò alla fortezza, entrò, e riferì la cosa a Paolo. | 16 Now the son of Paul's sister heard of their ambush; so he went and entered the barracks and told Paul. |
| 17 E Paolo, fatto chiamare uno dei centurioni, gli disse: «Conduci questo giovine dal tribuno; ha qualche cosa da fargli sapere». | 17 And Paul called one of the centurions and said, "Take this young man to the tribune; for he has something to tell him." |
| 18 E subito colui lo prese, lo menò al tribuno e disse: «Quel carcerato, Paolo, m'ha pregato di condurre a te questo giovine, che ha qualche cosa da dirti». | 18 So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said, "Paul the prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you." |
| 19 E il tribuno, presolo per mano e ritiratosi in disparte con lui, gli domandò: «Che cos'hai da farmi sapere?». | 19 The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, "What is it that you have to tell me?" |
| 20 Ed egli rispose: «I Giudei si sono accordati per pregarti di condurre domani Paolo al Sinedrio col pretesto di esaminarlo più minutamente; | 20 And he said, "The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closely about him. |
| 21 ma tu non ti fidare di essi, perchè più di quaranta de' loro gli preparano insidie, avendo fatto voto con imprecazioni di non mangiare nè bere, sino a che non l'abbiano ucciso: ed ora stanno pronti, aspettando il tuo assenso». | 21 But do not yield to them; for more than forty of their men lie in ambush for him, having bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him; and now they are ready, waiting for the promise from you." |
| 22 Il tribuno licenziò il giovane, dopo avergli comandato di non dire ad alcuno che gli aveva palesato tali cose. | 22 So the tribune dismissed the young man, charging him, "Tell no one that you have informed me of this." |
| 23 E chiamati due centurioni, disse loro: «Che sian pronti per la terza ora della notte dugento soldati, settanta cavalieri e dugento lancieri, per andar fino a Cesarea; | 23 Then he called two of the centurions and said, "At the third hour of the night get ready two hundred soldiers with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesarea. |
| 24 e fate preparare delle cavalcature per porvi Paolo sopra e condurlo salvo al governatore Felice». | 24 Also provide mounts for Paul to ride, and bring him safely to Felix the governor." |
| 25 Egli infatti temette che forse i Giudei, rapitolo, l'uccidessero, e su lui ricadesse la calunnia d'aver preso danaro. | 25 And he wrote a letter to this effect: |
| 26 Scrisse poi una lettera che diceva così: «Claudio Lisia, all'eccellentissimo governatore Felice, salute. | 26 "Claudius Lysias to his Excellency the governor Felix, greeting. |
| 27 Quest'uomo era stato preso dai Giudei e sul punto d'essere ucciso quand'io, sopraggiunto co' soldati, l'ho liberato, avendo inteso ch'è Romano; | 27 This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them, when I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman citizen. |
| 28 e, volendo conoscere di che l'accusavano lo condussi dinanzi al loro Sinedrio. | 28 And desiring to know the charge on which they accused him, I brought him down to their council. |
| 29 Ma trovai ch'è accusato di quistioni della loro legge, senza che ci sia colpa alcuna degna di morte o di catene. | 29 I found that he was accused about questions of their law, but charged with nothing deserving death or imprisonment. |
| 30 Or mi s'è riferito di insidie tese a lui; perciò te lo mando, avvertendo anche i suoi accusatori che si rivolgano a te. Sta' sano.» | 30 And when it was disclosed to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once, ordering his accusers also to state before you what they have against him." |
| 31 I soldati dunque, secondo gli ordini ricevuti, presero Paolo e lo condussero di notte ad Antipatride. | 31 So the soldiers, according to their instructions, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. |
| 32 Il giorno seguente, lasciando che i cavalieri andassero con lui, ritornarono alla fortezza. | 32 And on the morrow they returned to the barracks, leaving the horsemen to go on with him. |
| 33 E quelli, giunti a Cesarea, consegnarono la lettera al governatore e gli presentarono anche Paolo. | 33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they presented Paul also before him. |
| 34 Il governatore, com'ebbe letta la lettera, domandò a Paolo di qual provincia fosse; e udito che era di Cilicia, | 34 On reading the letter, he asked to what province he belonged. When he learned that he was from Cilicia |
| 35 disse: «T'ascolterò quando saranno arrivati anche i tuoi accusatori». E ordinò che fosse custodito nel pretorio di Erode. | 35 he said, "I will hear you when your accusers arrive." And he commanded him to be guarded in Herod's praetorium. |
