1 - Gesù poi se n'andò sul monte degli Ulivi;	1 And Jesus went unto mount Olivet.
2 e all'alba ritornò nel tempio e tutto il popolo accorse a lui, che seduto lo ammaestrava.	2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and sitting down he taught them.
3 Ora gli Scribi e i Farisei gli condussero una donna, sorpresa in adulterio; e messala in mezzo,	3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst,
4 gli dissero: «Maestro, questa donna è stata or ora sorpresa in adulterio.	4 And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery.
5 Ora Mosè nella Legge ci ha comandato di lapidare tali persone; tu che dici?».	5 Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou?
6 Essi dicevano ciò per cimentarlo, onde poterlo accusare. Ma Gesù si chinò e col dito si pose a scrivere in terra.	6 And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground.
7 Siccome insistevano nell'interrogarlo, si levò su e disse loro: «Chi tra voi è senza peccato, getti per primo contro di lei la pietra»;	7 When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 poi si chinò di nuovo e scriveva in terra.	8 And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground.
9 Ma coloro, udito ciò, se ne andarono, un dopo l'altro, cominciando dai più vecchi, in modo che Gesù rimase solo con la donna, ritta in mezzo.	9 But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 Gesù, alzatosi, le domandò: «Donna, dove sono i tuoi accusatori? Nessuno ti ha condannato?».	10 Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee?
11 Ed ella disse: «Nessuno, Signore». «Ebbene», soggiunse Gesù «neppure io ti condanno; va' e non voler più peccare».	11 Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.
12 Gesù di nuovo parlò a quelli, dicendo: «Io sono la luce del mondo; chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce di vita».	12 Again therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 Allora i Farisei gli dissero: «Tu ti rendi testimonianza da te medesimo, ma la tua testimonianza non è veritiera».	13 The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself: thy testimony is not true.
14 Gesù rispose loro: «Benchè io mi renda testimonianza da me, la mia testimonianza è veritiera, perchè so donde sono venuto e dove vado. Voi invece non sapete nè donde vengo nè dove vado.	14 Jesus answered, and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but you know not whence I come, or whither I go.
15 Voi giudicate secondo la carne, ma io non giudico nessuno.	15 You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man.
16 E se io giudico, il mio giudizio è vero, perchè io non sono solo; ma sono io ed il Padre che mi ha mandato.	16 And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 Anche nella vostra legge sta scritto che la "testimonianza di due uomini è degna di fede".	17 And in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 Ora io rendo testimonianza di me stesso e rende testimonianza di me anche il Padre che mi ha mandato».	18 I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me.
19 Gli domandarono: «Dov'è il Padre tuo?». Rispose Gesù: «Voi non conoscete nè me, nè il Padre; se conosceste me, conoscereste forse anche il Padre mio».	19 They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father: if you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.
20 Queste parole disse Gesù nel gazofilacio, insegnando nel tempio; e nessuno lo prese perchè non era ancora venuta l'ora sua.	20 These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
21 Gesù disse loro di nuovo: «Io me ne vado e voi mi cercherete, e morrete nel vostro peccato. Dove vado io, voi non potete venire».	21 Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come.
22 I Giudei perciò cominciarono a dire: «Che voglia forse uccidersi, poichè dice: - Dove vado io, voi non potete venire? -».	22 The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come?
23 Ed egli soggiunse loro: «Voi siete di quaggiù, io sono di lassù; voi siete di questo mondo, io non sono di questo mondo.	23 And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world.
24 Perciò vi ho detto che morirete nei vostri peccati, perchè se non credete che sono io, morirete nei vostri peccati».	24 Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.
25 Gli domandarono allora: «E tu chi sei?». Gesù rispose loro: «Il principio che vi parlo.	25 They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you.
26 A vostro riguardo ho molte cose da dire e da giudicare, ma Colui che mi mandò è verace e ciò che io ho udito da lui, lo dico al mondo».	26 Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world.
27 Essi non capirono che egli chiamava suo Padre Dio.	27 And they understood not, that he called God his Father.
28 Gesù dunque disse loro: «Quando avrete inalzato il Figliuol dell'uomo, allora conoscerete che sono io, e non faccio nulla da me, ma parlo sempre in conformità a quanto mi ha insegnato il Padre mio;	28 Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak:
29 e chi mi ha mandato è con me e non mi ha lasciato solo, perchè faccio sempre quanto piace a lui».	29 And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him.
30 Mentre parlava così, molti credettero in lui;	30 When he spoke these things, many believed in him.
31 e Gesù prese a dire ai Giudei che avevano creduto in lui: «Se rimarrete nella mia parola, sarete veramente miei discepoli,	31 Then Jesus said to those Jews, who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed.
32 conoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi».	32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 Gli replicarono: «Noi siamo della stirpe di Abramo e non fummo mai schiavi di nessuno; come dunque dici: - Diverrete liberi? -».	33 They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never been slaves to any man: how sayest thou: you shall be free?
34 Rispose Gesù: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi commette il peccato è schiavo del peccato.	34 Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin.
35 Ora lo schiavo non resta per sempre nella casa; il figlio invece vi resta per sempre.	35 Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever; but the son abideth for ever.
36 Se dunque il Figliuolo vi avrà liberati, sarete veramente liberi.	36 If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.
37 So che siete figli di Abramo; ma voi cercate di uccidermi, perchè la mia parola non penetra in voi.	37 I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 Io dico quello che ho veduto presso il Padre mio; e voi pure fate quello che avete veduto presso il padre vostro».	38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father.
39 Gli replicarono: «Il nostro padre è Abramo». Soggiunse Gesù: «Se siete figli di Abramo, fate le opere di Abramo.	39 They answered, and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham.
40 Invece voi ora cercate di uccidere me, che vi ho detto la verità, che udii da Dio. Abramo non fece così.	40 But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not.
41 Voi fate le opere del padre vostro». Gli risposero: «Non siamo nati da fornicazione! Abbiamo un solo Padre, Dio».	41 You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God.
42 E Gesù a loro: «Se Dio fosse vostro Padre, amereste anche me, perchè io procedetti e venni da Dio; non sono infatti venuto da me, ma Egli mi ha inviato.	42 Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded, and came; for I came not of myself, but he sent me:
43 Perchè non comprendete il mio linguaggio? Perchè non potete ascoltare la mia parola.	43 Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word.
44 Voi avete per padre il diavolo, e volete soddisfare i desiderii del padre vostro. Egli era omicida fin da principio, e non perseverò nella verità, perchè la verità non è in lui. Quando dice la menzogna, parla del suo, perchè è bugiardo e padre di quella.	44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
45 Se io quindi dico la verità, voi non mi credete.	45 But if I say the truth, you believe me not.
46 Chi di voi mi convincerà di peccato? Se io dico la verità, perchè non mi volete credere?	46 Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me?
47 Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio, ecco perchè voi non le ascoltate: perchè non siete da Dio».	47 He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God.
48 I Giudei replicarono: «Non abbiamo noi ragione di dire che sei un Samaritano, e hai un demonio?».	48 The Jews therefore answered, and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49 Rispose Gesù: «Io non ho un demonio, ma onoro il Padre mio e voi mi vituperate.	49 Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me.
50 Però io non cerco la mia gloria; v'è chi la cerca e giudica.	50 But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 In verità, in verità vi dico che se alcuno custodirà la mia parola non vedrà la morte in eterno».	51 Amen, amen I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever.
52 Gli dissero i Giudei: «Ora conosciamo bene che hai un demonio. Abramo è morto, come pure i profeti, e tu dici: - Chi custodirà le mie parole non gusterà la morte in eterno. -	52 The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever.
53 Sei tu da più del padre nostro Abramo, il quale è morto, come son morti anche i profeti? Chi pretendi di essere?».	53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself?
54 Gesù rispose: «Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria è vana; ma è il Padre mio che mi glorifica, quegli che voi chiamate vostro Dio;	54 Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God.
55 ma voi non lo conoscete, mentre io lo conosco, e se dicessi che non lo conosco, sarei bugiardo come voi, mentre lo conosco e ne osservo la parola.	55 And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word.
56 Abramo, vostro padre, esultò per vedere il mio giorno: lo vide e si rallegrò».	56 Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it, and was glad.
57 I Giudei allora gli dissero: «Non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai veduto Abramo?».	57 The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Prima che Abramo nascesse, io sono».	58 Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.
59 Allora presero delle pietre per scagliargliele contro; ma Gesù si nascose ed uscì dal tempio.	59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
