BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Giunsero i figli d'Israele e tutta la moltitudine nel deserto di Sin, il mese primo, ed il popolo si fermò in Cades. Ivi morì Maria, e nello stesso luogo fu sepolta.	1 The Israelites, the whole community, arrived in the first month at the desert of Zin. The people settledat Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.
2 Ora, trovandosi il popolo senza acqua s'assembrò contro Mosè ed Aronne,	2 There was no water for the community, so they banded together against Moses and Aaron.
3 e fatta sedizione dissero: «Meglio per noi se fossimo periti con gli altri nostri fratelli per mano del Signore!	3 The people laid the blame on Moses. 'We would rather have died', they said, 'as our brothers diedbefore Yahweh!
4 Perchè avete condotto il popolo del Signore nel deserto, per farvi morire noi ed i nostri animali?	4 Why have you brought Yahweh's community into this desert, for us and our livestock to die here?
5 Perchè ci faceste venir via dall'Egitto, e ci avete condotti in questo luogo disgraziato, che non si può seminare, che non dà nè fichi, nè uva, nè melagrane, e per di più non ha acqua da bere?».	5 Why did you lead us out of Egypt, only to bring us to this wretched place? It is a place unfit forsowing, it has no figs, no vines, no pomegranates, and there is not even water to drink!'
6 Mosè ed Aronne, congedata la moltitudine, entrarono nel tabernacolo dell'alleanza e gettatisi per terra gridarono al Signore, e dissero: «Signore Iddio, ascolta il grido di questo popolo ed apri a loro il tuo tesoro, una fonte d'acqua viva, acciò si dissetino e cessino dal mormorare». Apparve su loro la gloria del Signore,	6 Leaving the assembly, Moses and Aaron went to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. They threwthemselves on their faces, and the glory of Yahweh appeared to them.
7 ed il Signore parlò a Mosè, e gli disse:	7 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
8 «Prendi la verga, e tu ed Aronne tuo fratello radunate il popolo; presente il popolo, comandate a quel masso, e darà acqua. Quando avrai cavato l'acqua dal masso, ne beverà tutto il popolo co' suoi animali».	8 'Take the branch and call the community together, you and your brother Aaron. Then, in full view ofthem, order this rock to release its water. You wil release water from the rock for them and provide drink for thecommunity and their livestock.'
9 Mosè dunque prese la verga che stava innanzi al Signore [nel tabernacolo] come gli aveva comandato,	9 Moses took up the branch from before Yahweh, as he had directed him.
10 e radunata la moltitudine davanti al masso, disse loro: «Udite, o ribelli ed increduli: potremo noi farvi uscire dell'acqua da questo masso?».	10 Moses and Aaron then cal ed the assembly together in front of the rock. He then said to them,'Listen now, you rebels. Shall we make water gush from this rock for you?'
11 Levata poi la mano, percosse due volte con la verga la pietra, e ne uscirono acque copiosissime, tanto che ne bevvero il popolo e gli animali.	11 Moses then raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the branch; water gushed out inabundance, and the community and their livestock drank.
12 Ma il Signore disse a Mosè ed Aronne: «Poichè non m'avete creduto, nè m'avete glorificato innanzi a' figli d'Israele, non introdurrete questa gente nella terra ch'io darò loro».	12 Yahweh then said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not believe that I could assert my holinessbefore the Israelites' eyes, you wil not lead this assembly into the country which I am giving them.'
13 Quel luogo fu chiamato "L'acqua della contradizione", perchè ivi i figli d'Israele contesero col Signore, ed egli mostrò loro la sua grandezza.	13 These were the Waters of Meribah, where the Israelites laid the blame on Yahweh and where, bytheir means, he asserted his holiness.
14 Mosè frattanto mandò da Cades degli ambasciatori al re di Edom, a dirgli: «Questo ti fa sapere il fratello tuo Israele: - Tu conosci tutt'i travagli che ci hanno colpiti;	14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh: 'To the king of Edom. Your brother Israel says this: You areaware of the great hardships we have encountered.
15 come i padri nostri migrarono in Egitto, e noi v'abitammo molto tempo, e gli Egiziani angariarono noi ed i padri nostri;	15 Our ancestors went down to Egypt and there we stayed for a long time. But the Egyptians treated usbadly, as they had our ancestors.
16 come noi gridammo al Signore, ed egli ci esaudì mandandoci un angelo che ci cavò dall'Egitto. Ecco, trovandoci noi nella città di Cades che è agli ultimi tuoi confini,	16 When we appealed to Yahweh, he heard our cry and, sending an angel, brought us out of Egypt,and here we are, now, at Kadesh, a town on the borders of your territory.
17 preghiamo che ci sia concesso passare attraverso alla tua terra. Non passeremo pei campi nè per le vigne, nè consumeremo l'acqua de' tuoi pozzi, ma andremo per la strada maestra, non piegando nè a destra nè a sinistra, sinchè abbiamo oltrepassato i tuoi confini -».	17 We ask permission to pass through your country. We shall not go through the fields or vineyards; weshall not drink the water from the wel s; we shal keep to the king's highway without turning to right or left until wehave passed through your territory.'
18 Ma Edom rispose: «Non passerai attraverso le mie terre, altrimenti ti verrò incontro con le armi».	18 To which, Edom replied, 'You wil not pass through my country; if you do, I shal oppose you by forceof arms.'
19 Ed i figli d'Israele dissero: «Andremo per la via battuta, e se noi ed i nostri animali beveremo delle tue acque, pagheremo quello che è giusto; non faremo difficoltà per il prezzo, purchè possiamo passare speditamente».	19 To which the Israelites replied, 'We shal keep to the high road; if I and my flocks drink any of yourwater, I am wil ing to pay for it. Al I am asking is to pass through on foot.'
20 Ma quegli rispose: «Non passerai». E subito gli si mosse contro con una sterminata moltitudine di forti armati,	20 Edom replied: 'You shal not pass,' and Edom opposed them in great numbers and great force.
21 nè volle accontentare chi chiedeva gli fosse concesso di passare pei suoi confini. Laonde Israele girò lontano da lui.	21 At Edom's refusal to grant Israel passage through his territory, Israel turned away.
22 Levati dunque gli accampamenti da Cades, vennero al monte Hor, ai confini della terra di Edom.	22 They set out from Kadesh, and the Israelites, the whole community, came to Mount Hor.
23 Ivi il Signore parlò a Mosè,	23 Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the frontier of Edom, and said,
24 e disse: «Torni Aronne al popolo suo; giacchè non entrerà nella terra che ho assegnato a' figli d'Israele, essendo stato incredulo alle mie parole alle Acque della contradizione.	24 'Aaron is to be gathered to his people; he will not enter the country which I have given to theIsraelites, since you both disobeyed my order at the Waters of Meribah.
25 Prendi Aronne, ed il figlio suo con lui, e conducili sul monte Hor.	25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up Mount Hor.
26 Spogliato che avrai delle sue vesti il padre, ne vestirai Eleazaro figlio suo. Aronne morrà lì, e si riunirà [a' suoi padri]».	26 Then take Aaron's robes off him and dress his son Eleazar in them. Aaron wil then be gathered tohis people; that is where he will die.'
27 Fece Mosè come il Signore gli aveva comandato, e salirono sul monte Hor a vista di tutto il popolo.	27 Moses did as Yahweh ordered. With the whole community watching, they went up Mount Hor.
28 Poi, avendo spogliato Aronne delle sue vesti [pontificali], ne rivestì il figlio suo Eleazaro.	28 Moses took Aaron's robes off him and dressed his son Eleazar in them, and there Aaron died, onthe mountain-top. Moses and Eleazar then came back down the mountain.
29 E dopo che quegli fu morto sulla sommità del monte, discese con Eleazaro.	29 The whole community saw that Aaron had died, and for thirty days the whole House of Israelmourned for Aaron.
30 Ora tutto il popolo, visto che Aronne era morto, lo pianse in tutte le sue famiglie per trenta giorni.
