| 1 - O non grida ella la Sapienza? e la prudenza non alza forse la sua voce? | 1 Does not wisdom call, does not understanding raise her voice? |
| 2 In cima ai più alti ed elevati luoghi, nella via, ai canti della strada, dove s'è collocata, | 2 On the heights beside the way, in the paths she takes her stand; |
| 3 presso alle entrate della città, sull'ingresso delle porte parla e dice: | 3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: |
| 4 «O uomini, io grido a voi, alla progenie umana è diretta la mia voce. | 4 "To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the sons of men. |
| 5 Imparate, o fanciulli, e siate accorti, e voi, o stolti, state attenti, | 5 O simple ones, learn prudence; O foolish men, pay attention. |
| 6 udite, perchè sto per discorrere di cose grandi, ad annunziar cose rette s'apriranno le mie labbra. | 6 Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right; |
| 7 La verità nella bocca mi ragiona, e le mie labbra detesteranno l'empietà. | 7 for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. |
| 8 Tutti i miei discorsi sono giusti, in essi non v'è nulla di pravo, nè di perverso, | 8 All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. |
| 9 diritti per quelli che comprendono e precisi per coloro che hanno trovato la scienza. | 9 They are all straight to him who understands and right to those who find knowledge. |
| 10 Appigliatevi alla mia disciplina e non al denaro e scegliete la scienza piuttosto che l'oro; | 10 Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold; |
| 11 perchè è meglio la sapienza che tutte le cose più preziose, tutte le gioie più care non le stanno a paragone. | 11 for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. |
| 12 Io, Sapienza, risiedo nel consiglio e nei colti pensieri mi ritrovo; | 12 I, wisdom, dwell in prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion. |
| 13 il timor di Dio odia il male, l'arroganza, la superbia, la malvagia strada, la doppiezza nel parlare io detesto. | 13 The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. |
| 14 Mio è il consiglio e l'equità, mia la prudenza, mia la fortezza. | 14 I have counsel and sound wisdom, I have insight, I have strength. |
| 15 Per me regnano i re e i legislatori decretano il giusto; | 15 By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; |
| 16 per me i principi dominano e i magistrati regolano la giustizia. | 16 by me princes rule, and nobles govern the earth. |
| 17 Io amo chi mi ama, e coloro che si fan premura di cercarmi, mi troveranno. | 17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. |
| 18 Ho meco ricchezze e gloria, vistose dovizie e giustizia. | 18 Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and prosperity. |
| 19 Il mio frutto è migliore dell'oro e delle gemme e i miei proventi più che scelto argento. | 19 My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver. |
| 20 Io cammino per le vie della giustizia, in mezzo ai sentieri dell'equità, | 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, in the paths of justice, |
| 21 per arricchire coloro che mi amano e colmare i loro scrigni. | 21 endowing with wealth those who love me, and filling their treasuries. |
| 22 Il Signore mi ebbe con sè dall'inizio delle sue imprese innanzi che alcuna cosa facesse, da principio. | 22 The LORD created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. |
| 23 Ab eterno sono stata costituita anteriormente alla formazione della terra. | 23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. |
| 24 Io già era generata e gli abissi non esistevano e le fonti delle acque non scaturivano ancora, | 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. |
| 25 nè i monti ancora sorgevano colla loro grave mole; innanzi i colli fui generata; | 25 Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth; |
| 26 non aveva ancor fatta la terra nè i fiumi, nè i cardini del mondo. | 26 before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. |
| 27 Quando disponeva i cieli era presente, quando accerchiava gli abissi nel giro regolare dei loro confini, | 27 When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, |
| 28 quando fissava le atmosfere di sopra e sospendeva le fonti delle acque; | 28 when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, |
| 29 quando segnava in giro al mare il suo confine e poneva un limite alle acque, affinchè non oltrepassassero le sponde; quando gettava i fondamenti della terra, | 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, |
| 30 con lui io era disponendo tutte le cose e mi deliziava in tutti quei giorni trastullandomi dinanzi a lui continuamente, | 30 then I was beside him, like a master workman; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, |
| 31 trastullandomi nel cerchio della terra e le mie delizie essere coi figli degli uomini. | 31 rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the sons of men. |
| 32 Or dunque, o figliuoli, ascoltatemi: Beati coloro che si tengono sui miei sentieri! | 32 And now, my sons, listen to me: happy are those who keep my ways. |
| 33 Ascoltate l'amma estramento e siate saggie non vogliate rigettarlo. | 33 Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. |
| 34 Beato l'uomo che mi ascolta e che veglia quotidianamente alle mie imposte e sta assiduo alla soglia della mia porta! | 34 Happy is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. |
| 35 Chi mi avrà trovato, avrà trovato la vita e riceverà la salute dal Signore; | 35 For he who finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD; |
| 36 ma chi mi offende nuoce all'anima sua; tutti coloro che mi odiano, amano la morte!». | 36 but he who misses me injures himself; all who hate me love death." |
