1 - Ma dopo poco, il re fraudò un certo vecchio antiocheno a costringer i Giudei a rinnegare le leggi della patria e di Dio;	1 Not long after this the king sent an old man of Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers, and not to live after the laws of God:
2 ed inoltre, a contaminar il tempio di Gerusalemme, intitolandolo a Giove Olimpio, e quello del Garizlm a Giove Ospitale, come ospitali eran quelli che v’abitavano.	2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius; and that in Garizim, of Jupiter the Defender of strangers, as they did desire that dwelt in the place.
3 Orribile, ed. a tutti insopportabile era quel cumulo di mali;	3 The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people:
4 perchè il tempio era pieno della lussuria e delle crapule de’ gentili, e di quelli che vi tripudiavano con le meretrici; le donne di proprio arbitrio entravano ne' luoghi santi, portandovi quel che non era lecito;	4 For the temple was filled with riot and revelling by the Gentiles, who dallied with harlots, and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places, and besides that brought in things that were not lawful.
5 l’altare era pieno di cose vietate che dalle leggi eran proibite;	5 The altar also was filled with profane things, which the law forbiddeth.
6 non s’osservavano i sabati, nè le patrie solennità venivan celebrate, nè alcuno professava apertamente di esser Giudeo.	6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath days or ancient fasts, or to profess himself at all to be a Jew.
7 Il giorno natalizio del re, per dura necessità, venivan condotti a sacrificare, e quando si celebravano i misteri di Bacco, eran costretti ad andar in giro coronati di edera in onore di Bacco,	7 And in the day of the king's birth every month they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices; and when the fast of Bacchus was kept, the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus, carrying ivy.
8 Ad istigazione poi de' Tolomei, usci un editto nelle vicine città dei Gentili, affinchè nella stessa maniera essi pure agissero sul Giudei per farli sacrificare,	8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the heathen, by the suggestion of Ptolemee, against the Jews, that they should observe the same fashions, and be partakers of their sacrifices:
9 e quelli che non volesser passare alle usanze gentili, li uccidessero. Era dunque una miseria a vedersi,	9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death. Then might a man have seen the present misery.
10 Infatti, di due donne fu riferito che avevan circonciso i loro figliuoli, e dopo averle pubblicamente condotte attorno per la città coi bambini attaccati al petto, le precipitarono dalle mura.	10 For there were two women brought, who had circumcised their children; whom when they had openly led round about the city, the babes handing at their breasts, they cast them down headlong from the wall.
11 Altri, che s’erano riuniti nelle vicine spelonche, e vi celebravano di nascosto il giorno di sabato, essendo stati denunziati a Filippo, vi furono bruciati vivi, perchè per rispetto alla santità della legge non vollero difendersi.	11 And others, that had run together into caves near by, to keep the sabbath day secretly, being discovered by Philip, were all burnt together, because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day.
12 Ora io prego quelli che leggeranno questo libro, di non si scandalizzare per questa avversità, ma di credere che quel che accadde fu non per la rovina ma per l’ammaestramento della nostra gente.	12 Now I beseech those that read this book, that they be not discouraged for these calamities, but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction, but for a chastening of our nation.
13 Invero, non lasciar che i peccatori lungamente agiscano e proprio capriccio, ma presto castigarli, è segno di grande benevolenza.	13 For it is a token of his great goodness, when wicked doers are not suffered any long time, but forthwith punished.
14 Con le altre nazioni, il Signore aspetta pazientemente, per punirle nella pienezza de' loro peccati quando verrà il giorno dei giudizio; non cosi con noi ;	14 For not as with other nations, whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish, till they be come to the fulness of their sins, so dealeth he with us,
15 nè con noi ha stabilito di castigarci alla fine, quando i nostri peccati hanno colma la misura.	15 Lest that, being come to the height of sin, afterwards he should take vengeance of us.
16 Perciò non mai da noi ritira la sua misericordia, e castigandoci con le avversità non abbandona il suo popolo.	16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us: and though he punish with adversity, yet doth he never forsake his people.
17 Sia ciò detto brevemente ad ammonizione de' lettori; ora, riprendiamo il racconto.	17 But let this that we at spoken be for a warning unto us. And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in a few words.
18 Eleazaro, dunque, dei principali tra gli scribi, anziano d’età, di nobile aspetto, apertogli a forza la bocca, volevan costringerlo a mangiare carne di porco.	18 Eleazar, one of the principal scribes, an aged man, and of a well favoured countenance, was constrained to open his mouth, and to eat swine's flesh.
19 Ma egli preferendo una gloriosissima morte ad una spregevole vita, volontariamente s'incamminava al supplizio;	19 But he, choosing rather to die gloriously, than to live stained with such an abomination, spit it forth, and came of his own accord to the torment,
20 perchè, riflettendo come gli convenisse condursi e sopportar fortemente, deliberò di non voler commettere cose illecite per salvarsi la vita.	20 As it behoved them to come, that are resolute to stand out against such things, as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted.
21 Quelli però ch’eran presenti, mossi da falsa compassione per l’antica amicizia che gli avevano, chiamandolo da parte, gli suggerivano di farsi portar carni lecite, fingendo di mangiare, secondo l’editto del re, di quelle sacrificate,	21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast, for the old acquaintance they had with the man, taking him aside, besought him to bring flesh of his own provision, such as was lawful for him to use, and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king;
22 e cosi esser libero dalla morte; per l’antica amicizia con lui, gli usavano tal riguardo.	22 That in so doing he might be delivered from death, and for the old friendship with them find favour.
23 Ma egli si mise a pensare all’eminente dignità della sua vecchiezza, all’ingenita nobiltà della sua canizie, alla sua illibata condotta sin da fanciullo; e secondo gli statuti della santa legge da Dio stabilita rispose subito che voleva piuttosto esser messo a morte.	23 But he began to consider discreetly, and as became his age, and the excellency of his ancient years, and the honour of his gray head, whereon was come, and his most honest education from a child, or rather the holy law made and given by God: therefore he answered accordingly, and willed them straightways to send him to the grave.
24 e disse: « Non conviene alla mia età fingere, in modo che molti tra i giovani, credendo che Eleazaro di novantanni sia passato ai costumi dei Gentili,	24 For it becometh not our age, said he, in any wise to dissemble, whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar, being fourscore years old and ten, were now gone to a strange religion;
25 restino anch’essi tratti in errore dalla mia simulazione, per amore d’un altro poco di questa corruttibile vita, e cosi lo mi attiri il disonore e la maledizione sulla mia vecchiezza.	25 And so they through mine hypocrisy, and desire to live a little time and a moment longer, should be deceived by me, and I get a stain to mine old age, and make it abominable.
26 Perchè, anche se nella vita presente mi risparmierò i supplizi degli uomini, nè vivo nè morto sfuggirò alla mano dell’ Onnipotente.	26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men: yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty, neither alive, nor dead.
27 Perciò, uscendo fortemente di vita, mi mostrerò degno della mia vecchiezza,	27 Wherefore now, manfully changing this life, I will shew myself such an one as mine age requireth,
28 e lascerò ai giovani un nobile esempio, se con prontezza e costanza incontrerò un’onorata morte per leggi cosi venerabili e sante». Ciò detto, veniva senz’altro condotto al supplizio.	28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and courageously for the honourable and holy laws. And when he had said these words, immediately he went to the torment:
29 Quelli però che ve lo conducevano, e poco fa gli erano stati benevoli, montarono in furia per le sue parole, che essi pensavano provenire da arroganza.	29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred, because the foresaid speeches proceeded, as they thought, from a desperate mind.
30 Ma egli, vicino a morire sotto i colpi, gemendo, disse: « Signore che hai scienza santa, tu sai chiaramente che io, mentre avrei potuto liberarmi dalla morte, sostengo nel corpo acerbi dolori ; ma nell’animo li sopporto volentieri per il tuo timore ».	30 But when he was ready to die with stripes, he groaned, and said, It is manifest unto the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, that whereas I might have been delivered from death, I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten: but in soul am well content to suffer these things, because I fear him.
31 Così quegli passò di vita, lasciando non solo ai giovani ma all’ intera nazione la memoria della sua morte, ed un esempio di virtù e di fortezza. Martirio di sette fratelli e della loro madre.	31 And thus this man died, leaving his death for an example of a noble courage, and a memorial of virtue, not only unto young men, but unto all his nation.
