1 - Ma dopo poco, il re fraudò un certo vecchio antiocheno a costringer i Giudei a rinnegare le leggi della patria e di Dio;	1 But not long after the king sent a certain old man of Antioch, to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers and of God:
2 ed inoltre, a contaminar il tempio di Gerusalemme, intitolandolo a Giove Olimpio, e quello del Garizlm a Giove Ospitale, come ospitali eran quelli che v’abitavano.	2 And to defile the temple that was in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius: and that in Gazarim of Jupiter Hospitalis, according as they were that inhabited the place.
3 Orribile, ed. a tutti insopportabile era quel cumulo di mali;	3 And very bad was this invasion of evils and grievous to all.
4 perchè il tempio era pieno della lussuria e delle crapule de’ gentili, e di quelli che vi tripudiavano con le meretrici; le donne di proprio arbitrio entravano ne' luoghi santi, portandovi quel che non era lecito;	4 For the temple was full of the riot and revellings of the Gentiles: and of men lying with lewd women. And women thrust themselves of their accord into the holy places, and brought in things that were not lawful.
5 l’altare era pieno di cose vietate che dalle leggi eran proibite;	5 The altar also was filled with unlawful things, which were forbidden by the laws.
6 non s’osservavano i sabati, nè le patrie solennità venivan celebrate, nè alcuno professava apertamente di esser Giudeo.	6 And neither were the sabbaths kept, nor the solemn days of the fathers observed, neither did any man plainly profess himself to be a Jew.
7 Il giorno natalizio del re, per dura necessità, venivan condotti a sacrificare, e quando si celebravano i misteri di Bacco, eran costretti ad andar in giro coronati di edera in onore di Bacco,	7 But they were led by bitter constraint on the king's birthday to the sacrifices: and when the feast of Bacchus was kept, they wore compelled to go about crowned with ivy in honour of Bacchus.
8 Ad istigazione poi de' Tolomei, usci un editto nelle vicine città dei Gentili, affinchè nella stessa maniera essi pure agissero sul Giudei per farli sacrificare,	8 And there went out a decree into the neighbouring cities of the Gentiles, by the suggestion of the Ptolemeans, that they also should act in like manner against the Jews, to oblige them to sacrifice:
9 e quelli che non volesser passare alle usanze gentili, li uccidessero. Era dunque una miseria a vedersi,	9 And whosoever would not conform themselves to the ways of the Gentiles, should be put to death: then was misery to be seen.
10 Infatti, di due donne fu riferito che avevan circonciso i loro figliuoli, e dopo averle pubblicamente condotte attorno per la città coi bambini attaccati al petto, le precipitarono dalle mura.	10 For two women were accused to have circumcised their children: whom, when they had openly led about through the city with the infants hanging at their breasts, they threw down headlong from the walls.
11 Altri, che s’erano riuniti nelle vicine spelonche, e vi celebravano di nascosto il giorno di sabato, essendo stati denunziati a Filippo, vi furono bruciati vivi, perchè per rispetto alla santità della legge non vollero difendersi.	11 And others that had met together in caves that were near, and were keeping the sabbath day privately, being discovered by Philip, were burnt with fire, because they made a conscience to help themselves with their hands, by reason of the religious observance of the day.
12 Ora io prego quelli che leggeranno questo libro, di non si scandalizzare per questa avversità, ma di credere che quel che accadde fu non per la rovina ma per l’ammaestramento della nostra gente.	12 Now I beseech those that shall read this book, that they be not shocked at these calamities, but that they consider the things that happened, not as being for the destruction, but for the correction of our nation.
13 Invero, non lasciar che i peccatori lungamente agiscano e proprio capriccio, ma presto castigarli, è segno di grande benevolenza.	13 For it is a token of great goodness when sinners are not suffered to go on in their ways for a long time, but are presently punished.
14 Con le altre nazioni, il Signore aspetta pazientemente, per punirle nella pienezza de' loro peccati quando verrà il giorno dei giudizio; non cosi con noi ;	14 For, not as with other nations (whom the Lord patiently expecteth, that when the day of judgment shall come, he may punish them in the fulness of their sins:)
15 nè con noi ha stabilito di castigarci alla fine, quando i nostri peccati hanno colma la misura.	15 Doth he also deal with us, so as to suffer our sins to come to their height, and then take vengeance on us.
16 Perciò non mai da noi ritira la sua misericordia, e castigandoci con le avversità non abbandona il suo popolo.	16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us: but though he chastise his people with adversity, he forsaketh them not.
17 Sia ciò detto brevemente ad ammonizione de' lettori; ora, riprendiamo il racconto.	17 But let this suffice in a few words for a warning to the readers. And now we must come to the narration.
18 Eleazaro, dunque, dei principali tra gli scribi, anziano d’età, di nobile aspetto, apertogli a forza la bocca, volevan costringerlo a mangiare carne di porco.	18 Eleazar one of the chief of the scribes, a man advanced in years, and of a comely countenance, was pressed to open his mouth to eat swine's flesh.
19 Ma egli preferendo una gloriosissima morte ad una spregevole vita, volontariamente s'incamminava al supplizio;	19 But he, choosing rather a most glorious death than a hateful life, went forward voluntarily to the torment.
20 perchè, riflettendo come gli convenisse condursi e sopportar fortemente, deliberò di non voler commettere cose illecite per salvarsi la vita.	20 And considering in what manner he was come to ii;, patiently bearing, he determined not to do any unlawful things for the love of life.
21 Quelli però ch’eran presenti, mossi da falsa compassione per l’antica amicizia che gli avevano, chiamandolo da parte, gli suggerivano di farsi portar carni lecite, fingendo di mangiare, secondo l’editto del re, di quelle sacrificate,	21 But they that stood by, being moved with wicked pity, for the old friendship they had with the man, taking him aside, desired that flesh might be brought, which it was lawful for him to eat, that he might make as if he had eaten, as the king had commanded of the flesh of the sacrifice:
22 e cosi esser libero dalla morte; per l’antica amicizia con lui, gli usavano tal riguardo.	22 That by so doing he might be delivered from death: and for the sake of their old friendship with the man they did him this courtesy.
23 Ma egli si mise a pensare all’eminente dignità della sua vecchiezza, all’ingenita nobiltà della sua canizie, alla sua illibata condotta sin da fanciullo; e secondo gli statuti della santa legge da Dio stabilita rispose subito che voleva piuttosto esser messo a morte.	23 But he began to consider the dignity of his age, and his ancient years, and the inbred honour of his grey head, and his good life and conversation from a child: and he answered without delay, according to the ordinances of the holy law made by God, saying, that he would rather be sent into the other world.
24 e disse: « Non conviene alla mia età fingere, in modo che molti tra i giovani, credendo che Eleazaro di novantanni sia passato ai costumi dei Gentili,	24 For it doth not become our age, said he, to dissemble: whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar, at the age of fourscore and ten years, was gone over to the life of the heathens:
25 restino anch’essi tratti in errore dalla mia simulazione, per amore d’un altro poco di questa corruttibile vita, e cosi lo mi attiri il disonore e la maledizione sulla mia vecchiezza.	25 And so they, through my dissimulation, and for a little time of a corruptible life, should be deceived, end hereby I should bring a stain and a curse upon my old age.
26 Perchè, anche se nella vita presente mi risparmierò i supplizi degli uomini, nè vivo nè morto sfuggirò alla mano dell’ Onnipotente.	26 For though, for the present time, I should be delivered from the punishments of men, yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty neither alive nor dead.
27 Perciò, uscendo fortemente di vita, mi mostrerò degno della mia vecchiezza,	27 Wherefore by departing manfully out of this life, I shall shew myself worthy of my old age:
28 e lascerò ai giovani un nobile esempio, se con prontezza e costanza incontrerò un’onorata morte per leggi cosi venerabili e sante». Ciò detto, veniva senz’altro condotto al supplizio.	28 And I shall leave an example of fortitude to young men, if with a ready mind and constancy I suffer an honourable death, for the most venerable and most holy laws. And having spoken thus, he was forthwith carried to execution.
29 Quelli però che ve lo conducevano, e poco fa gli erano stati benevoli, montarono in furia per le sue parole, che essi pensavano provenire da arroganza.	29 And they that led him, and had been a little before more mild, were changed to wrath for the words he had spoken, which they thought were uttered out of arrogancy.
30 Ma egli, vicino a morire sotto i colpi, gemendo, disse: « Signore che hai scienza santa, tu sai chiaramente che io, mentre avrei potuto liberarmi dalla morte, sostengo nel corpo acerbi dolori ; ma nell’animo li sopporto volentieri per il tuo timore ».	30 But when he was now ready to die with the stripes, he groaned, and said: O Lord, who hast the holy knowledge, thou knowest manifestly that whereas I might be delivered from death, I suffer grevious pains in body: but in soul am well content to suffer these things because I fear thee.
31 Così quegli passò di vita, lasciando non solo ai giovani ma all’ intera nazione la memoria della sua morte, ed un esempio di virtù e di fortezza. Martirio di sette fratelli e della loro madre.	31 Thus did this man die, leaving not only to young men, but also to the whole nation, the memory of his death for an example of virtue and fortitude.
