1 - Conchiusi questi patti, Lisia, ritornò ai re, ed i Giudei attèndevano a coltivare i loro campi.	1 A short time after this Lysias the king's lieutenant, and cousin, and who had chief charge over all the affairs, being greatly displeased with what had happened,
2 Ma quelli [de' Siri] che eran rimasti, Timoteo ed Apollonio figlio di Genneo, come anche Girolamo e Demofonte, ed inoltre Nicanore prefetto di Cipro, non li lasciavano stare tranquilli ed in pace.	2 Gathered together fourscore thousand men, and all the horsemen, and came against the Jews, thinking to take the city, and make it a habitation of the Gentiles :
3 Quelli poi di Joppe commisero questa scelleratezza: invitarono i Giudei che abitavano con loro a salire su delle barche da essi preparate, con le mogli ed i figli, come se con loro non vi fosse inimicizia alcuna.	3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other temples of the Gentiles, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:
4 I Giudei, così invitati per decreto di tutta la città, acconsentirono, non avendo alcun sospetto, e per amor di pace; ma quando furono al largo, quelli ne annegarono non meno di duecento.	4 Never considering the power of God, but puffed up in mind, and trusting in the multitude of his foot soldiers, and the thousands of his horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.
5 Quando Giuda seppe di questa crudeltà fatta ad uomini della sua nazione, dette gli ordini a' suoi soldati, e, invocato Dio giusto giudice,	5 So he came into Judea, and approaching to Bethsura, which was in a narrow place, the space of five furlongs from Jerusalem, he laid siege to that fortress.
6 piombò sugli uccisori de' suoi fratelli, e di notte mise fuoco al forte, incendiò le barche, e finì con la spada quelli che sfuggirono all'incendio.	6 But when Machabeus and they that were with him, understood that the strong holds were besieged, they and all the people besought the Lord with lamentations and tears, that he would send a good angel to save Israel.
7 Dopo questo, se ne partì con l’intenzione di tornare di nuovo, e sterminare tutti i Joppiti.	7 Then Machabeus himself, first taking his arms, exhorted the rest to expose themselves together with him, to the danger, and to succour their brethren.
8 Ma avendo saputo che anche quelli di Jamnia macchinavano di far altrettanto con quei Giudei che abitavan fra loro,	8 And when they were going forth together with a willing mind, there appeared at Jerusatem a horseman going before them in white clothing, with golden armour, shaking a spear.
9 sorprese nella notte anche i Jamnlti, ed incendiò il porto con le navi, sicché il chiarore delle fiamme si vedeva da Gerusalemme, a duecentoquaranta stadii.	9 Then they all together blessed merciful Lord, and took great courage, being ready to break through not only men, but also the fiercest beasts, walls of iron.
10 Di lì, incamminatosi contro Timoteo, fatti che ebbe nove stadii, lo assalirono cinquemila fanti e cinquecento cavalieri Arabi.	10 So they went on courageously, having a helper from Peaven, and the who shewed mercy to them.
11 Dopo un accanito combattimento ben riuscito con l’aiuto di Dio, i superstiti Arabi vinti chiedevano a Giuda che facesse pace con loro, promettendo di dargli armenti, e di aiutarlo in altra maniera.	11 And rushing violently upon the my, like lions, they slew of them eleven thousand footmen, and one thousand hundred horsemen:
12 Giuda, pertanto, giudicando che potessero davvero essergli utili in molte cose, promise la pace, e quelli, ricevutala, tornarono alle loro tende.	12 And put all the rest to flight: many of them being wounded, escaped naked: yea and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and escaped.
13 Assalì anche una città fortificata, guarnita intorno di ponti, e di mura, abitata da gente di diverse nazioni, chiamata Casfin.	13 And as he was a man of understanding considering with himself, the loss he had suffered, and perceiving that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because they relied upon the help of the Almighty God, he sent to them:
14 Ma quelli che vi erano dentro, fidandosi della solidità delle mura, e delle provviste di vettovaglie, sì difendevano fiaccamente, ricoprendo Giuda d’Ingiurie, bestemmiando, e dicendo cose da non ripetersi.	14 And promised that he would agree to all things that are just, and that he would persuade the king to be their friend.
15 Laonde il Maccabeo, invocato il grande Signore del mondo, che senza arieti e macchine a tempo di Giosuè aveva abbattuto Gerico, irruppe furiosamente contro le mura,	15 Then Machabeus consented to the request of Lysias, providing for the common Food in all things, and whatsoever Machabeus wrote to Lysias concerning the Jews, the king allowed of.
16 e presa per volontà di Dio la città vi fece immensa strage, così che il vicino stagno, largo due stadii, pareva scorrere del sangue degli uccisi	16 For there were letters written to the Jews from Lysias, to this effect: Lysias to the people of the Jews, greeting.
17 Di lì proseguirono per settecentocinquanta stadii, e vennero in Caraca, a que' Giudei che son detti Tubianel.	17 John and Abesalom who were sent from you, delivering your writings, requested that I would accomplish those things which were signified by them.
18 Ma non trovarono in que' luoghi Timoteo, il quale, senza nulla aver concluso, se n’era venuto via, lasciando in un certo luogo una fortissima guarnigione.	18 Therefore whatsoever things could be reported to the king I have represented to him: and he hath granted as much as the matter permitted.
19 Ora, Dositeo e Sosipatro, capitani al seguito del Maccabeo, uccisero diecimila di quelli lasciati a guardia da Timoteo.	19 If therefore you will keep yourselves loyal in affairs, hereafter also I will endeavour to be a means of your good.
20 Ed il Maccabeo, messi in ordine intorno a sè seimila uomini, e divisili in coorti, proseguì incontro a Timoteo che aveva seco centoventimila fanti e duemllacinquecento cavalieri.	20 But as concerning other particulars, I have given orders by word both to these, and to them that are sent by me, to commune with you.
21 Quando seppe della venuta di Giuda, Timoteo mandò avanti le donne, i ragazzi, ed il rimanente bagaglio in una fortezza chiamata Carnion, la quale era inespugnabile e di difficile accesso per la ristrettezza dei passi.	21 Fare ye well. In the year one hundred and forty-eight, the four and twentieth day of the month of Dioscorus.
22 Ma quando la prima coorte di Giuda si mostrò, i nemici furon presi da spavento per la presenza di Dio che tutto vede, e furon messi in fuga gli uni dagli altri, così che venivan travolti da loro medesimi, e colpiti dalle spade del compagni.	22 But the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus to Lysias his brother, greeting.
23 Giuda poi vigorosamente li inseguiva ; per far punizione di quei pagani, de' quali ne uccise trentamila.	23 Our father being translated amongst the gods, we are desirous that they that are in our realm should live quietly, and apply themselves diligently to their own concerns,
24 Lo stesso Timoteo cadde nelle mani di quelli di Dositeo e di Sosipatro, e con molte preghiere si raccomandava d'esser rimandato vivo, perchè aveva in suo potere molti, genitori e fratelli de’ Giudei che alla sua morte verrebbero maltrattati.	24 And we have heard that the Jews would not consent to my father to turn to the rites of the Greeks, but that they would keep to their own manner of living, and therefore that they request us to allow them to live after their own laws.
25 Avendo egli dato fede che li restituirebbe secondo il patto, lo rilasciarono incolume per la salvezza de’ fratelli.	25 Wherefore being desirous that this nation also should be at rest, we have ordained and decreed, that the temple should be restored to them, and that they may live according to the custom of their ancestors.
26 Giuda poi assalì Camion, uccidendovi ventlcinquemila uomini.	26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send to them, and grant them peace, that our pleasure being known, they may be of good comfort, and look to their own affairs.
27 Dopo aver messi in fuga ed uccisi quelli, mosse l’esercito contro Efron, piazza forte, dove abitava una popolazione di genti diverse, e forti giovani a difesa delle mura tenevano testa accanitamente. Ivi anche erano macchine molte, e gran quantità di dardi.	27 But the king's letter to the Jews was in this manner: King Antiochus to the senate of the Jews, and to the rest of the Jews, greeting.
28 Ma [i Giudei], Invocato l’Onnipotente che con la sua potenza spezza le forze de' nemici, presero la città, e, di quelli che v’eran dentro, ne abbatterono ventlcinquemila.	28 If you are well, you are as we desire, we ourselves also are well.
29 Di lì, marciarono sulla città degli Sciti, distante da Gerusalemme seicento stadii.	29 Menelaus came to us, saying that you desired to come down to your countrymen, that are with us.
30 Ma siccome i Giudei dimoranti in Scitopoli attestavano d’esser stati benignamente trattati da quelli abitanti, i quali, anche nei tempi della calamità si erano condotti con loro con moderazione,	30 We grant therefore a safe conduct to all that come and go, until the thirtieth day of the month of Xanthicus,
31 li ringraziarono, esortandoli ad esser anche per l’avvenire benevoli alla loro gente; indi vennero a Gerusalemme, essendo vicino il giorno solenne delle Settimane.	31 That the Jews may use their own Bind of meats, and their own laws as before, and that none of them any manner of ways be molested for things which have been done by ignorance.
32 Fatta la Pentecoste, mossero contro Gorgia condottiere degl’Idumei,	32 And we have sent also Menelaus to speak to you.
33 il quale s’era avanzato con tremila fanti e quattrocento cavalieri.	33 Fare ye well. In the year one hundred and forty-eight, the fifteenth day of the month of Xanthicus.
34 Venuti alle mani, caddero alcuni pochi Giudei;	34 The Romans also sent them a letter, to this effect. Quintus Memmius, and Titus Manilius, ambassadors of the Romans, to the people of the Jews, greeting.
35 ed un certo Dositeo, cavaliere di quei di Bacenore, uomo valoroso, aveva preso Gorgia, e voleva farlo prigioniero; ma un cavaliere dei Traci gli fu addosso e gli tagliò il braccio, e così Gorgia fuggì in Maresa.	35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted you, we also have granted.
36 Quelli della coorte di Esdrin essendo stanchi dal lungo combattere, Giuda pregò il Signore che si facesse egli aiuto e capo della battaglia,	36 But touching such things as he thought should be referred to the king, after you have diligently conferred among yourselves, send some one forthwith, that we may decree as it is convenient for you: for we are going to Antioch.
37 ed intonati degl' inni nella lingua nazionale, e levato un grido, mise in fuga i soldati di Gorgia.	37 And therefore make haste to write back, that we may know of what mind you are.
38 Messo allora insieme il suo esercito, venne Giuda nella città di Odollam, e sopravvenendo il giorno settimo, ivi si purificarono secondo la legge, e celebrarono il sabato.	38 Fare ye well. In the year one hundred and forty-eight, the fifteenth day of the month of Xanthicus.
39 Il giorno di poi venne co’ suoi Giuda, per prendere i corpi degli uccisi, e porli co’ loro padri ne' sepolcri paterni,
40 Ora, sotto le tuniche dei morti trovarono degli oggetti idolatrici, presi già in Janima, proibiti ai Giudei dalla legge. Fu dunque a tutti manifesto che per cagione di questo eran essi caduti.
41 Tutti allora benedissero il giusto giudizio del Signore che aveva palesate le cose occulte,
42 e messisi in orazione pregarono perchè il peccato da quelli commesso fosse dimnticato. Ed il fortissimo uomo Giuda esortava il popolo a mantenersi senza peccato, avendo sott'occhio che cos’era accaduto per i peccati di quelli uccisi.
43 Fatta poi una colletta, mandò a Gerusalemme dodicimila dramme d’argento, perchè s’ofTrisse un sacrifizio per i peccati di que’ morti, bene e santamente pensando intorno alla resurrezione
44 (poiché, se non avesse sperato che quei caduti risorgerebbero, superfluo e vano parrebbe il pregare pel morti,
45 e perchè giudicava che a quelli i quali piamente avevan ricevuto la morte, sarebbe preparata una grande misericordia.
46 È dunque santo e salutare il pensiero di pregar pei defunti, acciò siano sciolti da’ loro peccati.
