| 1 Vedendo Gionata che le circostanze lo favorivano, scelse alcuni, e li mandò a Roma a confermare e rinnovare l’amicizia coi Romani. | 1 Now when Jonathan saw that the time was favorable for him, he chose men and sent them to Rome to confirm and renew the friendship with them. |
| 2 Anche agli Spartani ed in altri luoghi mandò lettere allo stesso scopo. | 2 He also sent letters to the same effect to the Spartans and to other places. |
| 3 Quelli dunque andarono a Roma, entrarono nella curia, e dissero: «Gionata sommo sacerdote, e la nazione giudea, cl hanno mandati per rinnovare con voi amicizia ed alleanza come per il passato ». | 3 So they went to Rome and entered the senate chamber and said, "Jonathan the high priest and the Jewish nation have sent us to renew the former friendship and alliance with them." |
| 4 Ed i Romani dettero a loro delle lettere pel loro ministri di diversi luoghi, acciò li riconducessero in sicurtà nella terra di Giuda. | 4 And the Romans * gave them letters to the people in every place, asking them to provide for the envoys * safe conduct to the land of Judah. |
| 5 Ed ecco il testo della lettera scritta da Gionata agli Spartani: | 5 This is a copy of the letter which Jonathan wrote to the Spartans: |
| 6 « Gionata sommo sacerdote, i seniori della nazione, i sacerdoti, e tutto il popolo de' Giudei, agli Spartani fratelli, salute. | 6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people to their brethren the Spartans, greeting. |
| 7 Già prima, da Ario che era vostro re, fu mandata ad Onia sommo sacerdote una lettera, che diceva voi essere nostri fratelli, come si esprime il rescritto qui portato. | 7 Already in time past a letter was sent to Onias the high priest from Arius, * who was king among you, stating that you are our brethren, as the appended copy shows. |
| 8 Ed Onia accolse con onore il personaggio inviato, ed accettò la lettera ove si parlava di alleanza ed amicizia. | 8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor, and received the letter, which contained a clear declaration of alliance and friendship. |
| 9 Noi però, non avendo di ciò alcun bisogno, perchè abbiamo per nostro sostegno i libri santi che sono in mano nostra, | 9 Therefore, though we have no need of these things, since we have as encouragement the holy books which are in our hands, |
| 10 abbiamo tuttavia voluto mandare a rinnovare con voi la fraternità e l'amicizia, acciò non v'avessimo a divenir estranei; è infatti molto tempo da che mandaste a noi. | 10 we have undertaken to send to renew our brotherhood and friendship with you, so that we may not become estranged from you, for considerable time has passed since you sent your letter to us. |
| 11 Noi dunque, in ogni occasione, senza mai tralasciarlo, nei giorni solenni, ed in quelli altri nel quali è di regola, ci ricordiamo di voi nei sacriflzil che offriamo, e nelle supplicazioni, com' è giusto e conveniente ricordarsi de' fratelli. | 11 We therefore remember you constantly on every occasion, both in our feasts and on other appropriate days, at the sacrifices which we offer and in our prayers, as it is right and proper to remember brethren. |
| 12 Godiamo dunque della vostra gloria. | 12 And we rejoice in your glory. |
| 13 Ma noi siamo stati stretti da molte tribolazioni e da molte guerre, ed assaliti dai re circonvicini. ’ | 13 But as for ourselves, many afflictions and many wars have encircled us; the kings round about us have waged war against us. |
| 14 In queste guerre, però, non abbiamo voluto esser molesti a voi nè agli altri nostri alleati ed amici ; | 14 We were unwilling to annoy you and our other allies and friends with these wars, |
| 15 avemmo infatti aiuto dal cielo, e noi siamo stati liberati, ed umiliati i nostri nemici. | 15 for we have the help which comes from Heaven for our aid; and we were delivered from our enemies and our enemies were humbled. |
| 16 Abbiamo dunque scelto Numenio figlio d'Antioco, ed Antipatro figlio di Giasone, e li abbiamo mandati al Romani, a rinnovar con loro l'amicizia e l'alleanza di prima ; | 16 We therefore have chosen Numenius the son of Antiochus and Antipater the son of Jason, and have sent them to Rome to renew our former friendship and alliance with them. |
| 17 ed abbiamo loro dato ordine di venire anche a voi, a salutarvi, e presentarvi le nostre lettere di rinnovamento della nostra fraternità. | 17 We have commanded them to go also to you and greet you and deliver to you this letter from us concerning the renewal of our brotherhood. |
| 18 Ed ora farete bene rispondendoci in proposito ». | 18 And now please send us a reply to this." |
| 19 Questo poi è il tenore della lettera mandata ad Onta: | 19 This is a copy of the letter which they sent to Onias: |
| 20 « Ario re degli Spartani, ad Onla gran sacerdote, salute. | 20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, to Onias the high priest, greeting. |
| 21 Degli Spartani e de' Giudei, s’è trovato in un certo scritto che sono fratelli, e che vengono dalla stirpe d'Abramo. | 21 It has been found in writing concerning the Spartans and the Jews that they are brethren and are of the family of Abraham. |
| 22 Ed ora, avendo noi scoperto questa cosa, farete bene a scriverci della vostra prosperità, | 22 And now that we have learned this, please write us concerning your welfare; |
| 23 come anche noi abbiamo scritto a voi. Il nostro bestiame ed i nostri possedimenti son vostri, ed i vostri son nostri. Abbiamo dunque mandato a parteciparvi queste cose ». | 23 we on our part write to you that your cattle and your property belong to us, and ours belong to you. We therefore command that our envoys * report to you accordingly." |
| 24 Di poi Gionata seppe che i generali di Demetrio eran tornati con un esercito più grande di prima, per combatter con lui. | 24 Now Jonathan heard that the commanders of Demetrius had returned, with a larger force than before, to wage war against him. |
| 25 Uscì di Gerusalemme, ed andò incontro a loro nella terra di Amat, non volendo dar loro tempo d’entrar nella terra sua. | 25 So he marched away from Jerusalem and met them in the region of Hamath, for he gave them no opportunity to invade his own country. |
| 26 E mandò esploratori sul loro campo, i quali tornarono a riferire che quelli avevano stabilito d’attaccarll all’ improvviso, la notte. | 26 He sent spies to their camp, and they returned and reported to him that the enemy * were being drawn up in formation to fall upon the Jews * by night. |
| 27 Quando dunque il sole fu tramontato, Gionata ordinò ai suoi di vegliare, e star in armi preparati a battaglia per tutta la notte; e mise delle guardie tutt’ intorno all’accampamento. | 27 So when the sun set, Jonathan commanded his men to be alert and to keep their arms at hand so as to be ready all night for battle, and he stationed outposts around the camp. |
| 28 Ed i nemici seppero che Gionata co’ suoi stava pronto a battaglia, ed ebber timore, e si persero d'animo; accesero dei fuochi ne’ loro accampamenti [e si ritirarono]. | 28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were prepared for battle, they were afraid and were terrified at heart; so they kindled fires in their camp and withdrew. * |
| 29 Gionata ed i suoi non se n’avvidero sino alle mattina, vedendo risplendere i fuochi. | 29 But Jonathan and his men did not know it until morning, for they saw the fires burning. |
| 30 Allora Gionata li Inseguì; ma non li raggiunse, perchè avevan passato il fiume Eleutero. | 30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he did not overtake them, for they had crossed the Eleutherus river. |
| 31 Poi, deviò Gionata versogli Arabi chiamati Zabadel, li sconfisse, e ne prese le spoglie. | 31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, and he crushed them and plundered them. |
| 32 Di lì mosse, e venne a Damasco, e percorreva tutta quella regione. | 32 Then he broke camp and went to Damascus, and marched through all that region. |
| 33 Simone pure si mosse, e venne sino ad Ascalon ed alle fortezze vicine; poi si diresse ad Joppe, e l’occupò; | 33 Simon also went forth and marched through the country as far as Askalon and the neighboring strongholds. He turned aside to Joppa and took it by surprise, |
| 34 aver infatti saputo che quelli volevan consegnare la piazza a Demetrio, e vi collocò una guarnigione che la custodisse. | 34 for he had heard that they were ready to hand over the stronghold to the men whom Demetrius had sent. And he stationed a garrison there to guard it. |
| 35 Tornato che fu Gionata, convocò i seniori del popolo, e pensò con loro di edificar fortezze in Giudea, | 35 When Jonathan returned he convened the elders of the people and planned with them to build strongholds in Judea, |
| 36 alzar muri in Gerusalemme, ed uno di grande altezza fra la cittadella e la città, per separar quella da questa, acciò rimanesse isolata, e [quei di dentro] non potessero comprare nè vendere. | 36 to build the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and to erect a high barrier between the citadel and the city to separate it from the city, in order to isolate it so that its garrison * could neither buy nor sell. |
| 37 Si trovaron dunque d’accordo per riedificar la città; e cadde il muro posto sopra il torrente, a levante; e Gionata ricostruì quello chiamato Cafeteta. | 37 So they gathered together to build up the city; part of the wall on the valley to the east had fallen, and he repaired the section called Chaphenatha. |
| 38 Simone poi edificò Adiada in Sefela, e la fortificò, e vi mise le porte ed i serramenti. | 38 And Simon built Adida in the Shephelah; he fortified it and installed gates with bolts. |
| 39 Ma Trifone pensava di farsi re dell’Asia, prender la corona, e disfarsi dei re Antioco. | 39 Then Trypho attempted to become king in Asia and put on the crown, and to raise his hand against Antiochus the king. |
| 40 Temendo però che Gionata non glielo permettesse ma prendesse le armi contro di lui, cercava d'averlo nelle mani ed ucciderlo. Si mosse dunque, ed andò In Betsan. | 40 He feared that Jonathan might not permit him to do so, but might make war on him, so he kept seeking to seize and kill him, and he marched forth and came to Beth-shan. |
| 41 Allora Gionata gli uscì incontro con quarantamila soldati scelti, e venne a Betsan. | 41 Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand picked fighting men, and he came to Beth-shan. |
| 42 Quando Trifone vide che Gionata era venuto con esercito grande per attaccarlo, ebbe paura. | 42 When Trypho saw that he had come with a large army, he was afraid to raise his hand against him. |
| 43 Lo ricevè con onore, lo raccomandò a tutt’i suoi amici, gli fece regali, e dette ordine a’ suol soldati che gli obbedissero come a lui medesimo. | 43 So he received him with honor and commended him to all his friends, and he gave him gifts and commanded his friends and his troops to obey him as they would himself. |
| 44 E disse a Gionata: « Perchè hai tu disturbato tutto il tuo popolo, mentre non v'è guerra fra noi? | 44 Then he said to Jonathan, "Why have you wearied all these people when we are not at war? |
| 45 Rimandali alle loro case, scegliti pochi uomini per scorta, e vieni con me in Tolemaide; io te la darò, con le rimanenti piazze forti e l’esercito e tutti gli addetti al governo; poi tornerò indietro e me n'andrò; chè solo per questo sono venuto ». | 45 Dismiss them now to their homes and choose for yourself a few men to stay with you, and come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you as well as the other strongholds and the remaining troops and all the officials, and will turn round and go home. For that is why I am here." |
| 46 Gionata gli credè; fece come gli aveva detto, e congedò l'esercito che se ne tornò nella terra di Giuda. | 46 Jonathan * trusted him and did as he said; he sent away the troops, and they returned to the land of Judah. |
| 47 Ritenne con sè tremila uomini, de’ quali poi rimandò duemila In Galilea; gli altri mille andaron con lui. | 47 He kept with himself three thousand men, two thousand of whom he left in Galilee, while a thousand accompanied him. |
| 48 Or quando Gionata fu entrato In Tolemaide, i cittadini chiusero le porte, e lo fecero prigioniero, ed uccisero di spada tutti quelli ch’eran entrati con lui. | 48 But when Jonathan entered Ptolemais, the men of Ptolemais closed the gates and seized him, and all who had entered with him they killed with the sword. |
| 49 Poi Trifone mandò l’esercito e la cavalleria In Galilea e nella gran pianura, a sterminare tutti i compagni di Gionata. | 49 Then Trypho sent troops and cavalry into Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's soldiers. |
| 50 Ma questi, quando seppero che Gionata era stato catturato ed ucciso con tutti quelli che eran con lui, s’incoraggiarono l’un l’altro, e si misero in ordine di battaglia. | 50 But they realized that Jonathan * had been seized and had perished along with his men, and they encouraged one another and kept marching in close formation, ready for battle. |
| 51 Or quelli che li avevano inseguiti, vedendo che questi giocavan la vita, tornaron indietro. | 51 When their pursuers saw that they would fight for their lives, they turned back. |
| 52 Ed essi giunsero tutti senza ostacolo nella terra di Giuda. E piansero molto Gionata e quelli ch’eran stati con lui: pianse di gran pianto Israele. | 52 So they all reached the land of Judah safely, and they mourned for Jonathan and his companions and were in great fear; and all Israel mourned deeply. |
| 53 Allora tutte le genti circonvicine pensavano di schiacciarli, dicendo: | 53 And all the nations round about them tried to destroy them, for they said, "They have no leader or helper. Now therefore let us make war on them and blot out the memory of them from among men." |
| 54 «Non hanno un capo, nè chi li aiuti. Ora dunque distruggiamoli, e disperdiamo di fra gli uomini la loro memoria » | |
