1 Il giorno appresso, Oloferne ordinò a' suoi eserciti di muovere contro Betulia.	1 But Holofernes on the next day gave orders to his army, to go up against Bethulia.
2 I fanti suol combattenti erano centoventimila, ed i cavalieri ventiduemila, oltre il rincalzo di quelli stati fatti prigionieri, e condotti via dalle province e dalle città, d'in fra tutta la gioventù.	2 Now there were in his troops a hundred and twenty thousand footmen, and two and twenty thousand horsemen, besides the preparations of those men who had been taken, and who had been brought away out of the provinces and cities of all the youth.
3 Tutti egualmente si prepararono a combattere contro i figli d'Israele, e vennero lungo il massiccio della montagna sino alla cima che guarda su Dotain, dal luogo chiamato Belma sino a Chelmon che è di faccia ad Esdrelon.	3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the children of Israel, and they came by the hillside to the top, which looketh toward Dothain, from the place which is called Behlma, unto Chelmon, which is over against Esdrelon.
4 I figli d'Israele, vista quella moltitudine, si prostraron per terra, spargendosi il capo di cenere, unanimi pregando il Dio d'Israele che mostrasse verso il suo popolo la sua misericordia.	4 But the children of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, putting ashes upon their heads, praying with one accord, that the God of Israel would shew his mercy upon his people.
5 Poi, prese le armi di guerra, si disposero pei luoghi che segnavano la via allo stretto passo fra i monti, e giorno e notte vi stavano a guardia.	5 And taking their arms of war, they posted themselves at the places, which by a narrow pathway lead directly between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.
6 Oloferne dal canto suo, girando attorno, trovò che la fontana la quale sgorgava [in città] era alimentata da un acquedotto che passava fuor di città dalla parte di mezzogiorno; e fece tagliare quell'acquedotto.	6 Now Holofernes, in going round about, found that the fountains which supplied them with water, ran through an aqueduct without the city on the south side: and he commanded their aqueduct to he cut off.
7 Non lungi però dalle mura v'erano delle fonti, e si vedeva andarvi gente di nascosto ad attingervi acqua, più per rifocillarsi che per cavarsi la sete.	7 Nevertheless there were springs not far from the walls, out of which they were seen secretly to draw water, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.
8 Allora i figli d'Ammon e di Moab si presentarono ad Oloferne, e gli dissero: «I figli d'Israele non confidano nelle lance e nelle frecce; ma hanno i monti che li difendono, e questi colli a precipizio che li proteggono.	8 But the children of Ammon and Moab came to Holofernes, saying: The children of Israel trust not in their spears, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hires and precipices guard them.
9 Se dunque li vuoi vincere senza venir con loro a battaglia, fa' guardar le fonti, si che non possano attingervi acque, e cosi li ucciderai senz'usare la spada; o stanchi consegneranno essi stessi la loro città che, posta come è sui monti, essi ritengono inespugnabile ».	9 Wherefore that thou mayst overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs that they may not draw water out of them, and thou shalt destroy them without sword, or at least being wearied out they will yield up their city, which they suppose, because it is situate in the mountains, to be impregnable.
10 Piacquero queste parole ad Oloferne ed a' suoi satelliti, e mise cento uomini a guardia di ciascuna fonte.	10 And these words pleased Holofernes, and his officers, and he placed all round about a hundred men at every spring.
11 Essendo durata già venti giorni questa guardia, furon vuote le cisterne e le conserve d'acqua per tutti gli abitanti di Betulia, cosi che non v'era in citta di che dissetarsi nemmeno per un giorno, e l'acqua veniva data a misura al popolo ogni giorno.	11 And when they had kept this watch for full twenty days, the cisterns, and the reserve of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was not within the city, enough to satisfy them, no not for one day, for water was daily given out to the people by measure.
12 Allora si radunarono tutti presso Ozia, uomini e donne, giovani e fanciulli e tutti ad una voce	12 Then all the men and women, young men, and children, gathering themselves together to Ozias, all together with one voice,
13 dissero: «Giudichi Dio fra noi e te, che tu ci hai fatto un gran male a non voler trattare la pace con gli Assiri; perciò Iddio ci ha come venduti nelle loro mani.	13 Said: God be judge between us and thee, for thou hast done evil against us, in that thou wouldst not speak peaceably with the Assyrians, and for this cause God hath sold us into their hands.
14 Perciò ancora nessuno ci aiuta, mentre siamo gettati a terra sotto i loro occhi dalla sete e dalla calamità.	14 And therefore there is no one to help us, while we are cast down before their eyes in thirst, and sad destruction.
15 Ed ora, convocate l'assemblea di tutti quelli che sono nella città, per arrenderci volontariamente a tutta la turba d'Oloferne.	15 And now assemble ye all that are in the city, that we may of our own accord yield ourselves all up to the people of Holofernes.
16 Meglio è infatti esser prigionieri ma vivi, e benedire il Signore, che morire, ed essere l'obbrobrio di tutti gli uomini dopo aver visto morire sotto 1 nostri occhi le nostre mogli ed i nostri figli.	16 For it is better, that being captives we should live and bless the Lord, than that we should die, and be a reproach to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our infants die before our eyes.
17 Davanti al cielo ed alla terra, ed al Dio de' padri nostri che ci punisce oggi secondo i nostri peccati, vi scongiuriamo di consegnar la città ai soldati di Oloferne; e sia breve per mezzo della spada la nostra fine, che ora ci si presenta lunga nell'arsura della sete ».	17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who taketh vengeance upon us according to our sins, conjuring you to deliver now the city into the hand of the army of Holofernes, that our end may be short by the edge of the sword, which is made longer by the drought of thirst.
18 Com'ebbero ciò detto, si levarono da ogni parte nell'assemblea gran pianti e gran grida, e per molte ore tutti insieme gridavano dicendo a Dio:	18 And when they had said these things, there was great weeping and lamentation of all in the assembly, and for many hours with one voice they cried to God, saying:
19 « Abbiamo peccato, noi ed i padri nostri, abbiamo operato ingiustamente, abbiamo commesso iniquità.	19 We have sinned with our fathers we have done unjustly, we have commited iniquity:
20 Tu, che se' buono, abbi pietà di noi, e punisci tu stesso coi tuoi flagelli le nostre iniquità; ma non voler consegnare ad un popolo che non ti conosce quelli che in te confidano,	20 Have thou mercy on us, because thou art good, or punish our iniquities by chastising us thyself, and deliver not them that trust in thee to a people that knoweth not thee,
21 acciò non s'abbia a dire fra le nazioni: - Dov'è il loro Dio? -».	21 That they may not say among the gentiles: Where is their God?
22 Quando poi, affaticati di queste grida, di questi pianti, si furon chetati,	22 And when being wearied with these cries, and tired with these weepings, they held their peace,
23 s'alzò Ozia bagnato di lacrime, e disse: «State di buon animo, fratelli, e per altri cinque giorni aspettiamo la misericordia di Dìo.	23 Ozias rising up all in tears, said: Be of good courage, my brethren, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.
24 Forse egli allontanerà da noi la sua collera, e darà gloria al suo nome.	24 For perhaps he will put a stop to his indignation, and will give glory to his own name.
25 Se poi, passati cinque giorni, non ci verrà aiuto, faremo come voi avete detto ».	25 But if after five days be past there come no aid, we will do the things which you leave spoken.
