BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 Allora i re e principi di tutte le città e province, della Siria cioè di Mesopotamia, della Siria di Sobal, della Libia e della Cilicia, mandarono i loro ambasciatori, i quali vennero ad Oloferne e gli dissero:	1 Then the kings as well as the princes of the provinces sent their emissaries from all of the cities: from Syria, particularly Mesopotamia, and Syria Sobal, and Libya as well as Cilicia. These, upon coming to Holofernes, said:
2 « Cessi la tua indignazione contro di noi. Perchè è meglio per noi servire da vivi il gran re Nabucodonosor, ed essere a te soggetti, che morire, ed insieme alla morte soffrire i danni del noatro servaggio.	2 “Let your indignation concerning us cease. For it is better for us to live in service to Nebuchadnezzar, the great king, and to become subject to you, rather than to die, even though we may have to suffer our condemnation into the annihilation of slavery.
3 Tutte le nostre città, tutt'i possessi, tutti i monti, colline e campi, armenti di bovi e greggi di pecore e capre, cavalli e cammelli, e tutte le nostre sostanze e famiglie sono a tua disposizione.	3 All our cities and all our possessions, all mountains, and hills, and fields, and herds of cattle, and flocks of sheep, and goats, and horses, and camels, and all our resources and families are in your sight.
4 Tutte le nostre cose siano in tuo potere.	4 Let all that we have be subject to your law.
5 Noi ed i figli nostri siamo tuoi servi.	5 We, and our sons, are your servants.
6 Vieni a noi come pacifico signore, e serviti di noi come ti piacerà ».	6 Come to us as a peaceful lord, and use our service, just as it pleases you.”
7 Allora Oloferne discese dai monti co' suoi cavalieri e gran forze, e s'impadronì di tutte le città, e di tutti gli abitanti della regione,	7 Then he descended from the mountains with horsemen, in great power, and he took charge of every city and of every inhabitant of the land.
8 e da ogni città si prese come ausiliari gli uomini forti ed atti alla guerra.	8 And, from all the cities, he took for himself auxiliaries: strong men and well-chosen for war.
9 Or quelle province furon prese da tanta paura, che gli abitanti di tutte le città, principi e maggiorenti insieme col popolo, uscivano incontro a lui quando veniva,	9 And such a dread lay upon those provinces, that the leading and honored inhabitants of all the cities, together with the people, went out to meet him at his arrival.
10 ricevendolo con corone e con faci, ed intrecciando danze con timpani e flauti.	10 They received him with garlands and lamps; they were led by choirs with timbrels and flutes.
11 Ma nemmeno così facendo poteron mitigare la ferocia del suo cuore.	11 Yet, not even by doing these things were they able to mitigate the ferocity of his chest.
12 Perchè distrusse le loro città, e tagliò i boschi sacri,	12 For he both destroyed their cities and cut down their sacred groves.
13 avendogli comandato il re Nabucodonosor di sterminare tutti gli dèi della terra per esser egli solo salutato dio da quei popoli che la potenza di Oloferne avesse potuto soggiogare,	13 For king Nebuchadnezzar had instructed him to exterminate all the gods of the earth, evidently so that he alone might be called ‘god’ by those nations which were able to be subjugated by the power of Holofernes.
14 Traversata dunque la Siria di Sobal, tutta l'Apamea e tutta la Mesopotamia, venne nell'Idumea nella terra di Gabaa,	14 But when he had passed through Syria Sobal, and all of Apamea, and all Mesopotamia, he came to the Idumeans in the land of Gibeah.
15 ne prese tutte le città, e vi si fermò per trenta giorni, durante i quali comandò che sì radunasse tutto l'esercito con tutte le sue forze.	15 And he took their cities, and he sat there for thirty days, during which days he instructed all the troops of his army to regroup.
