LXXDOUAI-RHEIMS
υπολαβων δε σωφαρ ο μιναιος λεγει1 Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:
ο τα πολλα λεγων και αντακουσεται η και ο ευλαλος οιεται ειναι δικαιος ευλογημενος γεννητος γυναικος ολιγοβιος2 Shall not he that speaketh much, hear also? or shall a man full of talk be justified?
μη πολυς εν ρημασιν γινου ου γαρ εστιν ο αντικρινομενος σοι3 Shall men hold their peace to thee only? and when thou hast mocked others, shall no man confute thee?
μη γαρ λεγε οτι καθαρος ειμι τοις εργοις και αμεμπτος εναντιον αυτου4 For thou hast said: My word is pure, and I am clean in thy sight.
αλλα πως αν ο κυριος λαλησαι προς σε και ανοιξει χειλη αυτου μετα σου5 And I wish that God would speak with thee, and would open his lips to thee,
ειτα αναγγελει σοι δυναμιν σοφιας οτι διπλους εσται των κατα σε και τοτε γνωση οτι αξια σοι απεβη απο κυριου ων ημαρτηκας6 That he might shew thee the secrets of wisdom, and that his law is manifold, and thou mightest understand that he exacteth much less of thee, than thy iniquity deserveth.
η ιχνος κυριου ευρησεις η εις τα εσχατα αφικου α εποιησεν ο παντοκρατωρ7 Peradventure thou wilt comprehend the steps of God, and wilt find out the Almighty perfectly?
υψηλος ο ουρανος και τι ποιησεις βαθυτερα δε των εν αδου τι οιδας8 He is higher than heaven, and what wilt thou do ? he is deeper than hell, and how wilt thou know?
η μακροτερα μετρου γης η ευρους θαλασσης9 The measure of him is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
εαν δε καταστρεψη τα παντα τις ερει αυτω τι εποιησας10 If he shall overturn all things, or shall press them together, who shall contradict him?
αυτος γαρ οιδεν εργα ανομων ιδων δε ατοπα ου παροψεται11 For he knoweth the vanity of men, and when he seeth iniquity, doth he not consider it?
ανθρωπος δε αλλως νηχεται λογοις βροτος δε γεννητος γυναικος ισα ονω ερημιτη12 A vain man is lifted up into pride, and thinketh himself born free like a wild ass's colt.
ει γαρ συ καθαραν εθου την καρδιαν σου υπτιαζεις δε χειρας προς αυτον13 Rut thou hast hardened thy heart, and hast spread thy hands to him.
ει ανομον τι εστιν εν χερσιν σου πορρω ποιησον αυτο απο σου αδικια δε εν διαιτη σου μη αυλισθητω14 If thou wilt put away from thee the iniquity that is in thy hand, and lot not injustice remain in thy tabernacle:
ουτως γαρ αναλαμψει σου το προσωπον ωσπερ υδωρ καθαρον εκδυση δε ρυπον και ου μη φοβηθης15 Then mayst thou lift up thy face without spot, and thou shalt be steadfast, and shalt not fear.
και τον κοπον επιληση ωσπερ κυμα παρελθον και ου πτοηθηση16 Thou shalt also forget misery, and remember it only as waters that are passed away.
η δε ευχη σου ωσπερ εωσφορος εκ δε μεσημβριας ανατελει σοι ζωη17 And brightness like that of the noonday, shall arise to thee at evening: and when thou shalt think thyself consumed, thou shalt rise as the day star.
πεποιθως τε εση οτι εστιν σοι ελπις εκ δε μεριμνης και φροντιδος αναφανειται σοι ειρηνη18 And thou shalt have confidence, hope being set before thee, and being buried thou shalt sleep secure.
ησυχασεις γαρ και ουκ εσται ο πολεμων σε μεταβαλομενοι δε πολλοι σου δεηθησονται19 Thou shalt rest, and there shall be none to make thee afraid: and many shall entreat thy face.
σωτηρια δε αυτους απολειψει η γαρ ελπις αυτων απωλεια οφθαλμοι δε ασεβων τακησονται20 But the eyes of the wicked shall decay, and the way to escape shall fail them, and their hope the abomination of the soul.
