1 In principio era il Verbo, e il Verbo era presso Dio e il Verbo era Dio.	1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word.
2 Egli era, in principio, presso Dio:	2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 tutto è stato fatto per mezzo di lui e senza di lui nulla è stato fatto di ciò che esiste.	3 All things were made through Him, and nothing that was made was made without Him.
4 In lui era la vita e la vita era la luce degli uomini;	4 Life was in Him, and Life was the light of men.
5 la luce splende nelle tenebre e le tenebre non l’hanno vinta.	5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
6 Venne un uomo mandato da Dio: il suo nome era Giovanni.	6 There was a man sent by God, whose name was John.
7 Egli venne come testimone per dare testimonianza alla luce, perché tutti credessero per mezzo di lui.	7 He arrived as a witness to offer testimony about the Light, so that all would believe through him.
8 Non era lui la luce, ma doveva dare testimonianza alla luce.	8 He was not the Light, but he was to offer testimony about the Light.
9 Veniva nel mondo la luce vera, quella che illumina ogni uomo.	9 The true Light, which illuminates every man, was coming into this world.
10 Era nel mondo e il mondo è stato fatto per mezzo di lui; eppure il mondo non lo ha riconosciuto.	10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not recognize him.
11 Venne fra i suoi, e i suoi non lo hanno accolto.	11 He went to his own, and his own did not accept him.
12 A quanti però lo hanno accolto ha dato potere di diventare figli di Dio: a quelli che credono nel suo nome,	12 Yet whoever did accept him, those who believed in his name, he gave them the power to become the sons of God.
13 i quali, non da sangue né da volere di carne né da volere di uomo, ma da Dio sono stati generati.	13 These are born, not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 E il Verbo si fece carne e venne ad abitare in mezzo a noi; e noi abbiamo contemplato la sua gloria, gloria come del Figlio unigenito che viene dal Padre, pieno di grazia e di verità.	14 And the Word became flesh, and he lived among us, and we saw his glory, glory like that of an only-begotten son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 Giovanni gli dà testimonianza e proclama: «Era di lui che io dissi: Colui che viene dopo di me è avanti a me, perché era prima di me».	15 John offers testimony about him, and he cries out, saying: “This is the one about whom I said: ‘He who is to come after me, has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”
16 Dalla sua pienezza noi tutti abbiamo ricevuto: grazia su grazia.	16 And from his fullness, we all have received, even grace for grace.
17 Perché la Legge fu data per mezzo di Mosè, la grazia e la verità vennero per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.	17 For the law was given though Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 Dio, nessuno lo ha mai visto: il Figlio unigenito, che è Dio ed è nel seno del Padre, è lui che lo ha rivelato.	18 No one ever saw God; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he himself has described him.
19 Questa è la testimonianza di Giovanni, quando i Giudei gli inviarono da Gerusalemme sacerdoti e leviti a interrogarlo: «Tu, chi sei?».	19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him, so that they might ask him, “Who are you?”
20 Egli confessò e non negò. Confessò: «Io non sono il Cristo».	20 And he confessed it and did not deny it; and what he confessed was: “I am not the Christ.”
21 Allora gli chiesero: «Chi sei, dunque? Sei tu Elia?». «Non lo sono», disse. «Sei tu il profeta?». «No», rispose.	21 And they questioned him: “Then what are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
22 Gli dissero allora: «Chi sei? Perché possiamo dare una risposta a coloro che ci hanno mandato. Che cosa dici di te stesso?».	22 Therefore, they said to him: “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
23 Rispose: «Io sono voce di uno che grida nel deserto: Rendete diritta la via del Signore, come disse il profeta Isaia».	23 He said, “I am a voice crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”
24 Quelli che erano stati inviati venivano dai farisei.	24 And some of those who had been sent were from among the Pharisees.
25 Essi lo interrogarono e gli dissero: «Perché dunque tu battezzi, se non sei il Cristo, né Elia, né il profeta?».	25 And they questioned him and said to him, “Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?”
26 Giovanni rispose loro: «Io battezzo nell’acqua. In mezzo a voi sta uno che voi non conoscete,	26 John answered them by saying: “I baptize with water. But in your midst stands one, whom you do not know.
27 colui che viene dopo di me: a lui io non sono degno di slegare il laccio del sandalo».	27 The same is he who is to come after me, who has been placed ahead of me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen.”
28 Questo avvenne in Betània, al di là del Giordano, dove Giovanni stava battezzando.	28 These things happened in Bethania, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 Il giorno dopo, vedendo Gesù venire verso di lui, disse: «Ecco l’agnello di Dio, colui che toglie il peccato del mondo!	29 On the next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and so he said: “Behold, the Lamb of God. Behold, he who takes away the sin of the world.
30 Egli è colui del quale ho detto: “Dopo di me viene un uomo che è avanti a me, perché era prima di me”.	30 This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me arrives a man, who has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’
31 Io non lo conoscevo, ma sono venuto a battezzare nell’acqua, perché egli fosse manifestato a Israele».	31 And I did not know him. Yet it is for this reason that I come baptizing with water: so that he may be made manifest in Israel.”
32 Giovanni testimoniò dicendo: «Ho contemplato lo Spirito discendere come una colomba dal cielo e rimanere su di lui.	32 And John offered testimony, saying: “For I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove; and he remained upon him.
33 Io non lo conoscevo, ma proprio colui che mi ha inviato a battezzare nell’acqua mi disse: “Colui sul quale vedrai discendere e rimanere lo Spirito, è lui che battezza nello Spirito Santo”.	33 And I did not know him. But he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: ‘He over whom you will see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
34 E io ho visto e ho testimoniato che questi è il Figlio di Dio».	34 And I saw, and I gave testimony: that this one is the Son of God.”
35 Il giorno dopo Giovanni stava ancora là con due dei suoi discepoli	35 The next day again, John was standing with two of his disciples.
36 e, fissando lo sguardo su Gesù che passava, disse: «Ecco l’agnello di Dio!».	36 And catching sight of Jesus walking, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
37 E i suoi due discepoli, sentendolo parlare così, seguirono Gesù.	37 And two disciples were listening to him speaking. And they followed Jesus.
38 Gesù allora si voltò e, osservando che essi lo seguivano, disse loro: «Che cosa cercate?». Gli risposero: «Rabbì – che, tradotto, significa Maestro –, dove dimori?».	38 Then Jesus, turning around and seeing them following him, said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi (which means in translation, Teacher), where do you live?”
39 Disse loro: «Venite e vedrete». Andarono dunque e videro dove egli dimorava e quel giorno rimasero con lui; erano circa le quattro del pomeriggio.	39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about the tenth hour.
40 Uno dei due che avevano udito le parole di Giovanni e lo avevano seguito, era Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro.	40 And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard about him from John and had followed him.
41 Egli incontrò per primo suo fratello Simone e gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato il Messia» – che si traduce Cristo –	41 First, he found his brother Simon, and he said to him, “We have found the Messiah,” (which is translated as the Christ).
42 e lo condusse da Gesù. Fissando lo sguardo su di lui, Gesù disse: «Tu sei Simone, il figlio di Giovanni; sarai chiamato Cefa» – che significa Pietro.	42 And he led him to Jesus. And Jesus, gazing at him, said: “You are Simon, son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas,” (which is translated as Peter).
43 Il giorno dopo Gesù volle partire per la Galilea; trovò Filippo e gli disse: «Seguimi!».	43 On the next day, he wanted to go into Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”
44 Filippo era di Betsàida, la città di Andrea e di Pietro.	44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Filippo trovò Natanaele e gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato colui del quale hanno scritto Mosè, nella Legge, e i Profeti: Gesù, il figlio di Giuseppe, di Nàzaret».	45 Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
46 Natanaele gli disse: «Da Nàzaret può venire qualcosa di buono?». Filippo gli rispose: «Vieni e vedi».	46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good be from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Gesù intanto, visto Natanaele che gli veniva incontro, disse di lui: «Ecco davvero un Israelita in cui non c’è falsità».	47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, and he said about him, “Behold, an Israelite in whom truly there is no deceit.”
48 Natanaele gli domandò: «Come mi conosci?». Gli rispose Gesù: «Prima che Filippo ti chiamasse, io ti ho visto quando eri sotto l’albero di fichi».	48 Nathanael said to him, “From where do you know me?” Jesus responded and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Gli replicò Natanaele: «Rabbì, tu sei il Figlio di Dio, tu sei il re d’Israele!».	49 Nathanael answered him and said: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.”
50 Gli rispose Gesù: «Perché ti ho detto che ti avevo visto sotto l’albero di fichi, tu credi? Vedrai cose più grandi di queste!».	50 Jesus responded and said to him: “Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, you believe. Greater things than these, you will see.”
51 Poi gli disse: «In verità, in verità io vi dico: vedrete il cielo aperto e gli angeli di Dio salire e scendere sopra il Figlio dell’uomo».	51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the Angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.”
