1 Il Signore parlò a Mosè nelle steppe di Moab, presso il Giordano di Gerico, e disse:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho, and said:
2 «Ordina agli Israeliti che dell'eredità che possederanno riservino ai leviti città da abitare; darete anche ai leviti il terreno che è intorno alle città.	2 'Order the Israelites, from the heritage they possess, to give the Levites towns in which to live andpasture land round the towns. You wil give these to the Levites.
3 Essi avranno le città per abitarvi e il terreno intorno servirà per il loro bestiame, per i loro beni e per tutti i loro animali.	3 The towns must be their homes and the surrounding pasture land must be for their cattle, theirpossessions and all their animals.
4 Il terreno delle città che darete ai leviti si estenderà per lo spazio di mille cubiti fuori dalle mura della città tutt'intorno.	4 The pasture land surrounding the towns which you give to the Levites wil extend, from the wal s ofthe towns, for a thousand cubits al round.
5 Misurerete dunque, all'esterno della città, duemila cubiti dal lato orientale, duemila cubiti dal lato meridionale, duemila cubiti dal lato occidentale e duemila cubiti dal lato settentrionale; la città sarà in mezzo. Tali saranno i terreni di ciascuna delle loro città.	5 'Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits to the east, two thousand cubits to the south, twothousand cubits to the west and two thousand cubits to the north, the town lying in the centre; such wil be thepasture lands of these towns.
6 Fra le città che darete ai leviti, sei saranno città di asilo, che voi designerete perché vi si rifugi l'omicida: a queste aggiungerete altre quarantadue città.	6 The towns you give to the Levites wil be six cities of refuge, ceded by you as sanctuary for those whocommit manslaughter; and you will give forty-two towns in addition.
7 Tutte le città che darete ai leviti saranno dunque quarantotto, con i relativi terreni.	7 Altogether you wil give the Levites forty-eight towns, with their pasture lands.
8 Le città che darete ai leviti verranno prese dalla proprietà degli Israeliti: da chi ha molto prenderete molto, da chi ha meno prenderete meno; ognuno ai leviti darà delle sue città in proporzione della parte che avrà ereditato».	8 Of the towns which you give from the Israelites' possessions, you wil give more from those who havemore, and less from those who have less. Each wil give some of his towns to the Levites, in proportion to theheritage he himself has received.'
9 Il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:	9 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
10 «Parla agli Israeliti dicendo loro: “Quando avrete attraversato il Giordano verso la terra di Canaan,	10 'Speak to the Israelites and say: "Once you have crossed the Jordan into Canaan,
11 designerete città che siano per voi città di asilo, dove possa rifugiarsi l'omicida che avrà ucciso qualcuno involontariamente.	11 you wil find towns, some of which you wil make into cities of refuge where those who haveaccidental y committed manslaughter can take sanctuary.
12 Queste città vi serviranno di asilo contro il vendicatore del sangue, perché l'omicida non sia messo a morte prima di comparire in giudizio dinanzi alla comunità.	12 These towns wil afford you refuge from the avenger of blood, so that the kil er will not be put todeath before standing trial before the community.
13 Delle città che darete, sei saranno dunque per voi città di asilo.	13 Of the towns you give, six wil serve you as cities of refuge:
14 Darete tre città di qua dal Giordano e darete tre altre città nella terra di Canaan; saranno città di asilo.	14 as cities of refuge, you wil give three towns on the other side of the Jordan and wil give three townsin Canaan.
15 Queste sei città serviranno di asilo agli Israeliti, al forestiero e all'ospite che soggiornerà in mezzo a voi, perché vi si rifugi chiunque abbia ucciso qualcuno involontariamente.	15 These six towns wil serve as refuge for the Israelites, for the foreigner and for the resident alien,where anyone who has accidental y kil ed someone can take sanctuary.
16 Ma se uno colpisce un altro con uno strumento di ferro e quello muore, quel tale è omicida; l'omicida dovrà essere messo a morte.	16 "But if he has struck the person with an iron object so as to cause death, he is a murderer. Themurderer wil be put to death.
17 Se lo colpisce con una pietra che aveva in mano, atta a causare la morte, e il colpito muore, quel tale è un omicida; l'omicida dovrà essere messo a morte.	17 If he has struck him with a stone meant for kil ing, and has kil ed him, he is a murderer. Themurderer wil be put to death.
18 O se lo colpisce con uno strumento di legno che aveva in mano, atto a causare la morte, e il colpito muore, quel tale è un omicida; l'omicida dovrà essere messo a morte.	18 Or if he has struck him with a wooden instrument meant for kil ing, and has kil ed him, he is amurderer. The murderer will be put to death.
19 Sarà il vendicatore del sangue quello che metterà a morte l'omicida; quando lo incontrerà, lo ucciderà.	19 The avenger of blood wil put the murderer to death. Whenever he finds him, he wil put him todeath.
20 Se uno dà a un altro una spinta per odio o gli getta contro qualcosa con premeditazione, e quello muore,	20 "If the killer has maliciously manhandled his victim, or thrown some lethal missile to strike him down,
21 o lo colpisce per inimicizia con la mano, e quello muore, chi ha colpito dovrà essere messo a morte; egli è un omicida e il vendicatore del sangue ucciderà l'omicida quando lo incontrerà.	21 or out of enmity dealt him the death-blow with his fist, then he who struck the blow wil be put todeath; he is a murderer; the avenger of blood wil put him to death whenever he finds him.
22 Ma se gli dà una spinta per caso e non per inimicizia o gli getta contro qualcosa senza premeditazione	22 If, however, he has manhandled his victim by chance, without malice, or thrown some missile at himnot meaning to hit him
23 o se, senza vederlo, gli fa cadere addosso una pietra che possa causare la morte e quello ne muore, senza che l'altro gli fosse nemico o gli volesse fare del male,	23 or, without seeing him, dropped on him a stone meant for kil ing and so kil ed him, so long as hebore him no malice and wished him no harm,
24 allora ecco le regole secondo le quali la comunità giudicherà fra colui che ha colpito e il vendicatore del sangue.	24 then the community will decide in accordance with these rules between the one who struck the blowand the avenger of blood,
25 La comunità libererà l'omicida dalle mani del vendicatore del sangue e lo farà tornare alla città di asilo dove era fuggito. Lì dovrà abitare fino alla morte del sommo sacerdote che fu unto con l'olio santo.	25 and wil save the kil er from the clutches of the avenger of blood. They will send him back to the cityof refuge where he had taken sanctuary, and there he wil stay until the death of the high priest who has beenanointed with the holy oil.
26 Ma se l'omicida esce dai confini della città di asilo dove si era rifugiato	26 Should the kil er leave the bounds of the city of refuge in which he has taken sanctuary
27 e se il vendicatore del sangue lo trova fuori dei confini della sua città di asilo e uccide l'omicida, il vendicatore del sangue non sarà reo del sangue versato.	27 and the avenger of blood encounter him outside the bounds of his city of refuge, the avenger ofblood may kil him without fear of reprisal;
28 Perché l'omicida deve stare nella sua città di asilo fino alla morte del sommo sacerdote; dopo la morte del sommo sacerdote, l'omicida potrà tornare nella terra di sua proprietà.	28 since the kil er should stay in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the deathof the high priest is he free to go back to his own piece of property.
29 Queste saranno per voi le regole di giudizio, di generazione in generazione, in tutte le vostre residenze.	29 Such wil be the legal rule for you and your descendants, wherever you may live.
30 Se uno uccide un altro, l'omicida sarà messo a morte in seguito a deposizione di testimoni, ma un unico testimone non basterà per condannare a morte una persona.	30 "In any case of homicide, the evidence of witnesses wil determine whether the kil er must be put todeath; but a single witness is not enough to sustain a capital charge.
31 Non accetterete prezzo di riscatto per la vita di un omicida, reo di morte, perché dovrà essere messo a morte.	31 You wil not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer condemned to death; he must die.
32 Non accetterete prezzo di riscatto che permetta all'omicida di fuggire dalla sua città di asilo e di tornare ad abitare nella sua terra fino alla morte del sacerdote.	32 Nor wil you accept a ransom for anyone who, having taken sanctuary in his city or refuge, wishes tocome back and live at home before the death of the high priest.
33 Non contaminerete la terra dove sarete, perché il sangue contamina la terra e per la terra non vi è espiazione del sangue che vi è stato sparso, se non mediante il sangue di chi l'ha sparso.	33 Do not profane the country you live in. Blood profanes the country and, for the country, the onlyexpiation for the blood shed in it is the blood of the man who shed it.
34 Non contaminerete dunque la terra che andate ad abitare e in mezzo alla quale io dimorerò; perché io sono il Signore che dimoro in mezzo agli Israeliti”».	34 So do not defile the country which you live in and where I live; for I, Yahweh, live among theIsraelites." '
