1 Il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 «Compi la vendetta degli Israeliti contro i Madianiti, quindi sarai riunito ai tuoi padri».	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 Mosè disse al popolo: «Si armino fra voi uomini per l’esercito e marcino contro Madian, per eseguire la vendetta del Signore su Madian.	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 Manderete in guerra mille uomini per tribù, per tutte le tribù d'Israele».	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 Così furono reclutati, tra le migliaia d'Israele, mille uomini per tribù, cioè dodicimila armati per la guerra.	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 Mosè mandò in guerra quei mille uomini per tribù e con loro Fineès, figlio del sacerdote Eleàzaro, il quale portava gli oggetti sacri e aveva in mano le trombe dell'acclamazione.	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 Marciarono dunque contro Madian, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè, e uccisero tutti i maschi.	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 Tra i caduti uccisero anche i re di Madian Evì, Rekem, Sur, Cur e Reba, cioè cinque re di Madian; uccisero di spada anche Balaam figlio di Beor.	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 Gli Israeliti fecero prigioniere le donne di Madian e i loro fanciulli e catturarono come bottino tutto il loro bestiame, tutte le loro greggi e ogni loro bene;	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 appiccarono il fuoco a tutte le città che quelli abitavano e a tutti i loro recinti,	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 e presero tutto il bottino e tutta la preda, gente e bestiame.	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 Poi condussero i prigionieri, la preda e il bottino a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleàzaro e alla comunità degli Israeliti, accampati nelle steppe di Moab, presso il Giordano di Gerico.	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 Mosè, il sacerdote Eleàzaro e tutti i prìncipi della comunità uscirono loro incontro fuori dell'accampamento.	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 Mosè si adirò contro i comandanti dell'esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, che tornavano da quella spedizione di guerra.	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 Mosè disse loro: «Avete lasciato in vita tutte le femmine?	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 Proprio loro, per suggerimento di Balaam, hanno insegnato agli Israeliti l’infedeltà verso il Signore, nella vicenda di Peor, per cui venne il flagello nella comunità del Signore.	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 Ora uccidete ogni maschio tra i fanciulli e uccidete ogni donna che si è unita con un uomo;	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 ma tutte le fanciulle che non si sono unite con uomini, conservatele in vita per voi.	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 Voi poi accampatevi per sette giorni fuori del campo; chiunque ha ucciso qualcuno e chiunque ha toccato un caduto, si purifichi il terzo e il settimo giorno: questo tanto per voi quanto per i vostri prigionieri.	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 Purificherete anche ogni veste, ogni oggetto di pelle, ogni lavoro di pelo di capra e ogni oggetto di legno».	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 Il sacerdote Eleàzaro disse agli uomini dell'esercito che erano andati alla battaglia: «Questa è la norma della legge che il Signore ha prescritto a Mosè:	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 “L'oro, l'argento, il bronzo, il ferro, lo stagno e il piombo,	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 quanto può sopportare il fuoco, lo farete passare per il fuoco e sarà reso puro, purché venga purificato anche con l'acqua della purificazione; quanto non può sopportare il fuoco, lo farete passare per l'acqua.	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 Laverete anche le vostre vesti il settimo giorno e sarete puri; poi potrete entrare nell'accampamento”».	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 Il Signore disse a Mosè:	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 «Tu, con il sacerdote Eleàzaro e con i capi dei casati della comunità, fa' il computo di tutta la preda che è stata fatta: della gente e del bestiame;	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 dividi la preda a metà fra coloro che, usciti in guerra, hanno sostenuto la battaglia e tutta la comunità.	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 Dalla parte spettante ai soldati che sono usciti in guerra preleverai un contributo per il Signore: cioè un individuo su cinquecento, tanto delle persone quanto del bestiame grosso, degli asini e del bestiame minuto.	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 Lo prenderete sulla metà di loro spettanza e lo darai al sacerdote Eleàzaro, come offerta da presentare quale contributo in onore del Signore.	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 Della metà che spetta agli Israeliti prenderai una quota di uno su cinquanta tanto delle persone quanto del bestiame grosso, degli asini e del bestiame minuto; la darai ai leviti, che hanno la custodia della Dimora del Signore».	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleàzaro fecero come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 Il bottino, cioè tutto ciò che rimaneva della preda fatta dagli uomini dell'esercito, consisteva in seicentosettantacinquemila capi di bestiame minuto,	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 settantaduemila capi di bestiame grosso,	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 sessantunmila asini	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 e trentaduemila persone, ossia donne che non si erano unite con uomini.	35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .
36 La metà, cioè la parte di quelli che erano usciti in guerra, fu di trecentotrentasettemilacinquecento capi di bestiame minuto,	36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,
37 dei quali seicentosettantacinque per il tributo al Signore;	37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,
38 trentaseimila capi di bestiame grosso, dei quali settantadue per il tributo al Signore;	38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,
39 trentamilacinquecento asini, dei quali sessantuno per il tributo al Signore,	39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,
40 e sedicimila persone, delle quali trentadue per il tributo al Signore.	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 Mosè diede al sacerdote Eleàzaro il contributo dell'offerta prelevata per il Signore, come il Signore gli aveva ordinato.	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 La metà che spettava agli Israeliti, dopo che Mosè ebbe fatto la spartizione per gli uomini dell'esercito,	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 la metà spettante alla comunità fu di trecentotrentasettemilacinquecento capi di bestiame minuto,	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 trentaseimila capi di bestiame grosso,	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 trentamilacinquecento asini	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 e sedicimila persone.	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 Da questa metà che spettava agli Israeliti, Mosè prese la quota di uno su cinquanta degli uomini e degli animali e li diede ai leviti che hanno la custodia della Dimora del Signore, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 I comandanti delle migliaia dell'esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, si avvicinarono a Mosè e gli dissero:	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 «I tuoi servi hanno fatto il computo dei soldati che erano sotto i nostri ordini e non ne manca neppure uno.	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 Per questo portiamo, in offerta al Signore, ognuno quello che ha trovato di oggetti d'oro: bracciali, braccialetti, anelli, pendenti, collane, per compiere il rito espiatorio per le nostre persone davanti al Signore».	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleàzaro presero da loro quell'oro, tutti gli oggetti lavorati.	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 Tutto l'oro del contributo che prelevarono per il Signore, da parte dei capi di migliaia e dei capi di centinaia, pesava sedicimilasettecentocinquanta sicli.	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 Gli uomini dell'esercito si tennero il bottino che ognuno aveva fatto per conto suo.	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleàzaro presero l'oro dei capi di migliaia e di centinaia e lo portarono nella tenda del convegno come memoriale per gli Israeliti davanti al Signore.	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
