BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 I tuoi giudizi sono grandi e difficili da spiegare; per questo le anime senza istruzione si sono ingannate.	1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.
2 Infatti gli ingiusti, avendo preteso di dominare il popolo santo, prigionieri delle tenebre e incatenati a una lunga notte, chiusi sotto i loro tetti, giacevano esclusi dalla provvidenza eterna.	2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.
3 Credendo di restare nascosti con i loro peccati segreti, sotto il velo oscuro dell’oblio, furono dispersi, terribilmente spaventati e sconvolti da visioni.	3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.
4 Neppure il nascondiglio in cui si trovavano li preservò dal timore, ma suoni spaventosi rimbombavano intorno a loro e apparivano lugubri spettri dai volti tristi.	4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.
5 Nessun fuoco, per quanto intenso, riusciva a far luce, neppure le luci più splendenti degli astri riuscivano a rischiarare dall’alto quella notte cupa.	5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.
6 Appariva loro solo una massa di fuoco, improvvisa, tremenda; atterriti da quella fugace visione, credevano ancora peggiori le cose che vedevano.	6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.
7 Fallivano i ritrovati della magia, e il vanto della loro saggezza era svergognato.	7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;
8 Infatti quelli che promettevano di cacciare timori e inquietudini dall’anima malata, languivano essi stessi in un ridicolo timore.	8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.
9 Anche se nulla di spaventoso li atterriva, messi in agitazione al passare delle bestie e ai sibili dei rettili, morivano di tremore, rifiutando persino di guardare l’aria che in nessun modo si può evitare.	9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;
10 La malvagità condannata dalla propria testimonianza è qualcosa di vile e, oppressa dalla coscienza, aumenta sempre le difficoltà.	10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!
11 La paura infatti altro non è che l’abbandono degli aiuti della ragione;	11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.
12 quanto meno ci si affida nell’intimo a tali aiuti, tanto più grave è l’ignoranza della causa che provoca il tormento.	12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;
13 Ma essi, durante tale notte davvero impotente, uscita dagli antri del regno dei morti anch’esso impotente, mentre dormivano il medesimo sonno,	13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.
14 ora erano tormentati da fantasmi mostruosi, ora erano paralizzati, traditi dal coraggio, perché una paura improvvisa e inaspettata si era riversata su di loro.	14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-
15 Così chiunque, come caduto là dove si trovava, era custodito chiuso in un carcere senza sbarre:	15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.
16 agricoltore o pastore o lavoratore che fatica nel deserto, sorpreso, subiva l’ineluttabile destino, perché tutti erano legati dalla stessa catena di tenebre.	16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.
17 Il vento che sibila o canto melodioso di uccelli tra folti rami o suono cadenzato dell’acqua che scorre con forza o cupo fragore di rocce che precipitano	17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.
18 o corsa invisibile di animali imbizzarriti o urla di crudelissime belve ruggenti o eco rimbalzante dalle cavità dei monti, tutto li paralizzava riempiendoli di terrore.	18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,
19 Il mondo intero splendeva di luce smagliante e attendeva alle sue opere senza impedimento.	19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.
20 Soltanto su di loro si stendeva una notte profonda, immagine della tenebra che li avrebbe avvolti; ma essi erano a se stessi più gravosi delle tenebre.	20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;
	21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.
