Each of them had a Greek force of one hundred and ten thousand infantry, five thousand three hundred cavalry, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariots armed with scythes. |
| 3 A costoro si era unito anche Menelao, il quale incoraggiava con molta astuzia Antioco, non per la salvezza della patria, ma per la speranza di tornare al potere. | 3 Menelaus also joined them and with utter hypocrisy urged Antiochus on, not for the sake of his country's welfare, but because he thought that he would be established in office. |
| 4 Ma il re dei re eccitò l’ira di Antioco contro quello scellerato e, avendogli Lisia dimostrato che era causa di tutti i mali, ordinò che fosse condotto a Berea e messo a morte secondo l’usanza del luogo. | 4 But the King of kings aroused the anger of Antiochus against the scoundrel; and when Lysias informed him that this man was to blame for all the trouble, he ordered them to take him to Beroea and to put him to death by the method which is the custom in that place. |

| 7 In tal modo morì Menelao, che non ebbe in sorte nemmeno la terra per la sepoltura. | 7 By such a fate it came about that Menelaus the lawbreaker died, without even burial in the earth. |
8 Giusto castigo poiché, dopo aver commesso molti delitti attorno all’altare, il cui fuoco è sacro quanto la cenere, nella cenere trovò la sua morte.
| 8 And this was eminently just; because he had committed many sins against the altar whose fire and ashes were holy, he met his death in ashes. |
| 9 Il re avanzava con barbari sentimenti e con l’intenzione di far provare ai Giudei trattamenti peggiori di quelli che avevano subìto sotto suo padre. | 9 The king with barbarous arrogance was coming to show the Jews things far worse than those that had been done in his father's time. |
| 10 Quando Giuda seppe queste cose, ordinò al popolo di pregare il Signore giorno e notte perché, come altre volte, così anche ora aiutasse coloro che correvano il rischio di essere privati della legge, della patria e del tempio santo | 10 But when Judas heard of this, he ordered the people to call upon the Lord day and night, now if ever to help those who were on the point of being deprived of the law and their country and the holy temple, |
| 11 e non permettesse che il popolo, che aveva appena goduto di un breve respiro, cadesse in mano a quelle nazioni infami. | 11 and not to let the people who had just begun to revive fall into the hands of the blasphemous Gentiles. |
| 12 Quando tutti insieme ebbero fatto ciò, supplicando il Signore misericordioso con gemiti e digiuni e prostrazioni per tre giorni consecutivi, Giuda li esortò e comandò loro di tenersi pronti. | 12 When they had all joined in the same petition and had besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying prostrate for three days without ceasing, Judas exhorted them and ordered them to stand ready. |
| 13 Quindi, incontratosi da solo con gli anziani, decise che con l’aiuto di Dio si doveva risolvere la situazione uscendo a battaglia prima che l’esercito del re entrasse nella Giudea e si impadronisse della città. | 13 After consulting privately with the elders, he determined to march out and decide the matter by the help of God before the king's army could enter Judea and get possession of the city. |
| 14 Affidando poi ogni cura al Creatore dell’universo, esortò i suoi a combattere da prodi fino alla morte per le leggi, il tempio, la città, la patria, le loro istituzioni, e pose il campo vicino a Modin. | 14 So, committing the decision to the Creator of the world and exhorting his men to fight nobly to the death for the laws, temple, city, country, and commonwealth, he pitched his camp near Modein. |
| 15 Data ai suoi uomini la parola d’ordine «Vittoria di Dio», con giovani, scelti tra i più valorosi, piombò di notte sulla tenda del re nell’accampamento, uccise circa duemila uomini e trafisse il più grosso degli elefanti insieme con l’uomo che era nella torretta. | 15 He gave his men the watchword, "God's victory," and with a picked force of the bravest young men, he attacked the king's pavilion at night and slew as many as two thousand men in the camp. He stabbed the leading elephant and its rider. |
| 16 Alla fine, riempito il campo di terrore e confusione, se ne tornarono soddisfatti per il successo ottenuto. | 16 In the end they filled the camp with terror and confusion and withdrew in triumph. |
17 Quando già spuntava il giorno, l’impresa era compiuta, per la protezione del Signore che aveva assistito Giuda.
| 17 This happened, just as day was dawning, because the Lord's help protected him. |
| 18 Il re, avuto questo saggio dell’audacia dei Giudei, tentò di prendere con astuzia quei luoghi. | 18 The king, having had a taste of the daring of the Jews, tried strategy in attacking their positions. |
| 19 Marciò contro Bet-Sur, una ben munita fortezza dei Giudei, ma fu respinto, ostacolato e battuto, | 19 He advanced against Beth-zur, a strong fortress of the Jews, was turned back, attacked again, and was defeated. |
| 20 poiché Giuda fece giungere il necessario agli assediati. | 20 Judas sent in to the garrison whatever was necessary. |
| 21 Intanto un certo Ròdoco, dell’esercito dei Giudei, aveva rivelato i segreti ai nemici: fu ricercato, catturato e tolto di mezzo. | 21 But Rhodocus, a man from the ranks of the Jews, gave secret information to the enemy; he was sought for, caught, and put in prison. |
| 22 Il re tornò a trattare con quelli che erano a Bet-Sur, diede e ricevette la destra e se ne andò. Assalì gli uomini di Giuda, ma ebbe la peggio. | 22 The king negotiated a second time with the people in Beth-zur, gave pledges, received theirs, withdrew, attacked Judas and his men, was defeated |
| 23 Venne poi a sapere che Filippo, lasciato ad Antiòchia come incaricato d’affari, era uscito di senno. Costernato, invitò i Giudei a trattare, si sottomise, si obbligò con giuramento a rispettare tutte le giuste condizioni, ristabilì l’accordo e offrì un sacrificio, onorò il tempio e beneficò il luogo santo. | 23 he got word that Philip, who had been left in charge of the government, had revolted in Antioch; he was dismayed, called in the Jews, yielded and swore to observe all their rights, settled with them and offered sacrifice, honored the sanctuary and showed generosity to the holy place. |
| 24 Poi ricevette il Maccabeo e lasciò Egemònide come stratega da Tolemàide fino al paese dei Gerreni. | 24 He received Maccabeus, left Hegemonides as governor from Ptolemais to Gerar, |
| 25 Venne a Tolemàide, ma i cittadini di Tolemàide si mostrarono malcontenti per quegli accordi; erano irritati contro coloro che avevano voluto abolire i loro privilegi. | 25 and went to Ptolemais. The people of Ptolemais were indignant over the treaty; in fact they were so angry that they wanted to annul its terms. |
| 26 Lisia allora salì sulla tribuna, fece la sua difesa meglio che poté, li persuase, li calmò, li rese ragionevoli; poi tornò ad Antiòchia. Così si svolsero i fatti relativi alla spedizione del re e alla sua ritirata. | 26 Lysias took the public platform, made the best possible defense, convinced them, appeased them, gained their good will, and set out for Antioch. This is how the king's attack and withdrawal turned out. |
