1 Nell’anno centoquarantanove giunse notizia agli uomini di Giuda che Antioco Eupàtore muoveva contro la Giudea con numerose truppe;	1 In the hundred forty and ninth year it was told Judas, that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea,
2 era con lui Lisia, suo tutore e incaricato d’affari, che aveva con sé un esercito greco di centodiecimila fanti, cinquemilatrecento cavalieri, ventidue elefanti e trecento carri falcati.	2 And with him Lysias his protector, and ruler of his affairs, having either of them a Grecian power of footmen, an hundred and ten thousand, and horsemen five thousand and three hundred, and elephants two and twenty, and three hundred chariots armed with hooks.
3 A costoro si era unito anche Menelao, il quale incoraggiava con molta astuzia Antioco, non per la salvezza della patria, ma per la speranza di tornare al potere.	3 Menelans also joined himself with them, and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus, not for the safeguard of the country, but because he thought to have been made governor.
4 Ma il re dei re eccitò l’ira di Antioco contro quello scellerato e, avendogli Lisia dimostrato che era causa di tutti i mali, ordinò che fosse condotto a Berea e messo a morte secondo l’usanza del luogo.	4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus' mind against this wicked wretch, and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief, so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea, and to put him to death, as the manner is in that place.
5 Vi è là una torre di cinquanta cubiti piena di cenere, dotata di un ordigno girevole che da ogni lato pende a precipizio sulla cenere.	5 Now there was in that place a tower of fifty cubits high, full of ashes, and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes.
6 Di lassù tutti possono spingere verso la morte chi è reo di sacrilegio o chi ha raggiunto il colmo di altri delitti.	6 And whosoever was condemned of sacrilege, or had committed any other grievous crime, there did all men thrust him unto death.
7 In tal modo morì Menelao, che non ebbe in sorte nemmeno la terra per la sepoltura.	7 Such a death it happened that wicked man to die, not having so much as burial in the earth; and that most justly:
8 Giusto castigo poiché, dopo aver commesso molti delitti attorno all’altare, il cui fuoco è sacro quanto la cenere, nella cenere trovò la sua morte.	8 For inasmuch as he had committed many sins about the altar, whose fire and ashes were holy, he received his death in ashes.
9 Il re avanzava con barbari sentimenti e con l’intenzione di far provare ai Giudei trattamenti peggiori di quelli che avevano subìto sotto suo padre.	9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty mind to do far worse to the Jews, than had been done in his father's time.
10 Quando Giuda seppe queste cose, ordinò al popolo di pregare il Signore giorno e notte perché, come altre volte, così anche ora aiutasse coloro che correvano il rischio di essere privati della legge, della patria e del tempio santo	10 Which things when Judas perceived, he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day, that if ever at any other time, he would now also help them, being at the point to be put from their law, from their country, and from the holy temple:
11 e non permettesse che il popolo, che aveva appena goduto di un breve respiro, cadesse in mano a quelle nazioni infami.	11 And that he would not suffer the people, that had even now been but a little refreshed, to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations.
12 Quando tutti insieme ebbero fatto ciò, supplicando il Signore misericordioso con gemiti e digiuni e prostrazioni per tre giorni consecutivi, Giuda li esortò e comandò loro di tenersi pronti.	12 So when they had all done this together, and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting, and lying flat upon the ground three days long, Judas, having exhorted them, commanded they should be in a readiness.
13 Quindi, incontratosi da solo con gli anziani, decise che con l’aiuto di Dio si doveva risolvere la situazione uscendo a battaglia prima che l’esercito del re entrasse nella Giudea e si impadronisse della città.	13 And Judas, being apart with the elders, determined, before the king's host should enter into Judea, and get the city, to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord.
14 Affidando poi ogni cura al Creatore dell’universo, esortò i suoi a combattere da prodi fino alla morte per le leggi, il tempio, la città, la patria, le loro istituzioni, e pose il campo vicino a Modin.	14 So when he had committed all to the Creator of the world, and exhorted his soldiers to fight manfully, even unto death, for the laws, the temple, the city, the country, and the commonwealth, he camped by Modin:
15 Data ai suoi uomini la parola d’ordine «Vittoria di Dio», con giovani, scelti tra i più valorosi, piombò di notte sulla tenda del re nell’accampamento, uccise circa duemila uomini e trafisse il più grosso degli elefanti insieme con l’uomo che era nella torretta.	15 And having given the watchword to them that were about him, Victory is of God; with the most valiant and choice young men he went in into the king's tent by night, and slew in the camp about four thousand men, and the chiefest of the elephants, with all that were upon him.
16 Alla fine, riempito il campo di terrore e confusione, se ne tornarono soddisfatti per il successo ottenuto.	16 And at last they filled the camp with fear and tumult, and departed with good success.
17 Quando già spuntava il giorno, l’impresa era compiuta, per la protezione del Signore che aveva assistito Giuda.	17 This was done in the break of the day, because the protection of the Lord did help him.
18 Il re, avuto questo saggio dell’audacia dei Giudei, tentò di prendere con astuzia quei luoghi.	18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews, he went about to take the holds by policy,
19 Marciò contro Bet-Sur, una ben munita fortezza dei Giudei, ma fu respinto, ostacolato e battuto,	19 And marched toward Bethsura, which was a strong hold of the Jews: but he was put to flight, failed, and lost of his men:
20 poiché Giuda fece giungere il necessario agli assediati.	20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary.
21 Intanto un certo Ròdoco, dell’esercito dei Giudei, aveva rivelato i segreti ai nemici: fu ricercato, catturato e tolto di mezzo.	21 But Rhodocus, who was in the Jews' host, disclosed the secrets to the enemies; therefore he was sought out, and when they had gotten him, they put him in prison.
22 Il re tornò a trattare con quelli che erano a Bet-Sur, diede e ricevette la destra e se ne andò. Assalì gli uomini di Giuda, ma ebbe la peggio.	22 The king treated with them in Bethsum the second time, gave his hand, took their's, departed, fought with Judas, was overcome;
23 Venne poi a sapere che Filippo, lasciato ad Antiòchia come incaricato d’affari, era uscito di senno. Costernato, invitò i Giudei a trattare, si sottomise, si obbligò con giuramento a rispettare tutte le giuste condizioni, ristabilì l’accordo e offrì un sacrificio, onorò il tempio e beneficò il luogo santo.	23 Heard that Philip, who was left over the affairs in Antioch, was desperately bent, confounded, intreated the Jews, submitted himself, and sware to all equal conditions, agreed with them, and offered sacrifice, honoured the temple, and dealt kindly with the place,
24 Poi ricevette il Maccabeo e lasciò Egemònide come stratega da Tolemàide fino al paese dei Gerreni.	24 And accepted well of Maccabeus, made him principal governor from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians;
25 Venne a Tolemàide, ma i cittadini di Tolemàide si mostrarono malcontenti per quegli accordi; erano irritati contro coloro che avevano voluto abolire i loro privilegi.	25 Came to Ptolemais: the people there were grieved for the covenants; for they stormed, because they would make their covenants void:
26 Lisia allora salì sulla tribuna, fece la sua difesa meglio che poté, li persuase, li calmò, li rese ragionevoli; poi tornò ad Antiòchia. Così si svolsero i fatti relativi alla spedizione del re e alla sua ritirata.	26 Lysias went up to the judgment seat, said as much as could be in defence of the cause, persuaded, pacified, made them well affected, returned to Antioch. Thus it went touching the king's coming and departing.
