1 In quei giorni Giuditta venne a conoscenza di questi fatti. Era figlia di Merarì, figlio di Os, figlio di Giuseppe, figlio di Ozièl, figlio di Chelkia, figlio di Anania, figlio di Gedeone, figlio di Rafaìn, figlio di Achitòb, figlio di Elia, figlio di Chelkia, figlio di Eliàb, figlio di Natanaèl, figlio di Salamièl, figlio di Sarasadài, figlio di Israele.	1 Now in those days Judith, daughter of Merari, son of Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son of Gideon, son of Raphain, son of Ahitob, son of Elijah, son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Simeon, son of Israel, heard of this.
2 Suo marito era stato Manasse, della stessa tribù e famiglia di lei; egli era morto al tempo della mietitura dell’orzo.	2 Her husband, Manasseh, of her own tribe and clan, had died at the time of the barley harvest.
3 Mentre stava sorvegliando quelli che legavano i covoni nella campagna, fu colpito da insolazione. Dovette mettersi a letto e morì a Betùlia, sua città, e lo seppellirono insieme ai suoi padri nel campo che sta tra Dotàim e Balamòn.	3 While he was in the field supervising those who bound the sheaves, he suffered sunstroke; and he died of this illness in Bethulia, his native city. He was buried with his forefathers in the field between Dothan and Balamon.
4 Giuditta era rimasta nella sua casa in stato di vedovanza ed erano passati già tre anni e quattro mesi.	4 The widowed Judith remained three years and four months at home,
5 Si era fatta preparare una tenda sul terrazzo della sua casa, si era cinta i fianchi di sacco e portava le vesti della sua vedovanza.	5 where she set up a tent for herself on the roof of her house. She put sackcloth about her loins and wore widow's weeds.
6 Da quando era vedova digiunava tutti i giorni, eccetto le vigilie dei sabati e i sabati, le vigilie dei noviluni e i noviluni, le feste e i giorni di gioia per Israele.	6 She fasted all the days of her widowhood, except sabbath eves and sabbaths, new moon eves and new moons, feastdays and holidays of the house of Israel.
7 Era bella d’aspetto e molto avvenente nella persona; inoltre suo marito Manasse le aveva lasciato oro e argento, schiavi e schiave, armenti e terreni che ora continuava ad amministrare.	7 She was beautifully formed and lovely to behold. 9 Venne dunque a conoscenza delle parole esasperate che il popolo aveva rivolto al capo della città, perché erano demoralizzati a causa della mancanza d’acqua, e Giuditta seppe anche di tutte le risposte che aveva dato loro Ozia e come avesse giurato loro di consegnare la città agli Assiri dopo cinque giorni.	9 When Judith, therefore, heard of the harsh words which the people, discouraged by their lack of water, had spoken against their ruler, and of all that Uzziah had said to them in reply, swearing that he would hand over the city to the Assyrians at the end of five days,
10 Subito mandò la sua ancella che aveva in cura tutte le sue sostanze a chiamare Cabrì e Carmì, che erano gli anziani della sua città.	10 she sent the maid who was in charge of all her things to ask Uzziah, Chabris, and Charmis, the elders of the city, to visit her.
11 Vennero da lei ed ella disse loro: «Ascoltatemi, capi dei cittadini di Betùlia. Non è un discorso giusto quello che oggi avete tenuto al popolo, e quel giuramento che avete pronunciato e interposto tra voi e Dio, di mettere la città in mano ai nostri nemici, se nel frattempo il Signore non verrà in vostro aiuto.	11 When they came, she said to them: "Listen to me, you rulers of the people of Bethulia. What you said to the people today is not proper. When you promised to hand over the city to our enemies at the end of five days unless within that time the Lord comes to our aid, you interposed between God and yourselves this oath which you took.
12 Chi siete voi dunque che avete tentato Dio in questo giorno e vi siete posti al di sopra di lui in mezzo ai figli degli uomini?	12 Who are you, then, that you should have put God to the test this day, setting yourselves in the place of God in human affairs?
13 Certo, voi volete mettere alla prova il Signore onnipotente, ma non comprenderete niente, né ora né mai.	13 It is the Lord Almighty for whom you are laying down conditions; will you never understand anything?
14 Se non siete capaci di scrutare il profondo del cuore dell’uomo né di afferrare i pensieri della sua mente, come potrete scrutare il Signore, che ha fatto tutte queste cose, e conoscere i suoi pensieri e comprendere i suoi disegni? No, fratelli, non provocate l’ira del Signore, nostro Dio.	14 You cannot plumb the depths of the human heart or grasp the workings of the human mind; how then can you fathom God, who has made all these things, discern his mind, and understand his plan? "No, my brothers, do not anger the Lord our God.
15 Se non vorrà aiutarci in questi cinque giorni, egli ha pieno potere di difenderci nei giorni che vuole o anche di farci distruggere dai nostri nemici.	15 For if he does not wish to come to our aid within the five days, he has it equally within his power to protect us at such time as he pleases, or to destroy us in the face of our enemies.
16 E voi non pretendete di ipotecare i piani del Signore, nostro Dio, perché Dio non è come un uomo a cui si possano fare minacce, né un figlio d’uomo su cui si possano esercitare pressioni.	16 It is not for you to make the Lord our God give surety for his plans. "God is not man that he should be moved by threats, nor human, that he may be given an ultimatum.
17 Perciò attendiamo fiduciosi la salvezza che viene da lui, supplichiamolo che venga in nostro aiuto e ascolterà il nostro grido, se a lui piacerà.	17 "So while we wait for the salvation that comes from him, let us call upon him to help us, and he will hear our cry if it is his good pleasure.
18 In realtà in questa nostra generazione non c’è mai stata né esiste oggi una tribù o famiglia o popolo o città tra noi, che adori gli dèi fatti da mano d’uomo, come è avvenuto nei tempi passati,	18 For there has not risen among us in recent generations, nor does there exist today, any tribe, or clan, or town, or city of ours that worships gods made by hands, as happened in former days.
19 ed è per questo che i nostri padri furono abbandonati alla spada e alla devastazione e caddero rovinosamente davanti ai loro nemici.	19 It was for such conduct that our forefathers were handed over to the sword and to pillage, and fell with great destruction before our enemies.
20 Noi invece non riconosciamo altro Dio fuori di lui, e per questo speriamo che egli non trascurerà noi e neppure la nostra nazione.	20 But since we acknowledge no other god but the Lord, we hope that he will not disdain us or any of our people.
21 Perché se noi saremo presi, resterà presa anche tutta la Giudea e saranno saccheggiate le nostre cose sante e Dio ci chiederà conto col nostro sangue di quella profanazione.	21 If we are taken, all Judea will fall, our sanctuary will be plundered, and God will make us pay for its profanation with our life's blood.
22 L’uccisione dei nostri fratelli, l’asservimento della patria, la devastazione della nostra eredità Dio le farà ricadere sul nostro capo in mezzo ai popoli tra i quali saremo schiavi, e saremo così motivo di scandalo e di disprezzo di fronte ai nostri padroni.	22 For the slaughter of our kinsmen, for the taking of exiles from the land, and for the devastation of our inheritance, he will lay the guilt on our heads. Wherever we shall be enslaved among the nations, we shall be a mockery and a reproach in the eyes of our masters.
23 La nostra schiavitù non ci procurerà alcun favore; il Signore, nostro Dio, la volgerà a nostro disonore.	23 Our enslavement will not be turned to our benefit, but the Lord our God, will maintain it to our disgrace.
24 Dunque, fratelli, dimostriamo ai nostri fratelli che la loro vita dipende da noi, che le nostre cose sante, il tempio e l’altare, poggiano su di noi.	24 "Therefore, my brothers, let us set an example for our kinsmen. Their lives depend on us, and the defense of the sanctuary, the temple, and the altar rests with us.
25 Per tutti questi motivi ringraziamo il Signore, nostro Dio, che ci mette alla prova, come ha già fatto con i nostri padri.	25 Besides all this, we should be grateful to the Lord our God, for putting us to the test, as he did our forefathers.
26 Ricordatevi quanto ha fatto con Abramo, quali prove ha fatto passare a Isacco e quanto è avvenuto a Giacobbe in Mesopotamia di Siria, quando pascolava le greggi di Làbano, suo zio materno.	26 Recall how he dealt with Abraham, and how he tried Isaac, and all that happened to Jacob in Syrian Mesopotamia while he was tending the flocks of Laban, his mother's brother.
27 Certo, come ha passato al crogiuolo costoro con il solo scopo di saggiare il loro cuore, così ora non vuol fare vendetta di noi, ma è a scopo di correzione che il Signore castiga quelli che gli stanno vicino».	27 Not for vengeance did the Lord put them in the crucible to try their hearts, nor has he done so with us. It is by way of admonition that he chastises those who are close to him."
28 Allora Ozia le rispose: «Quello che hai detto, l’hai proferito con cuore retto e nessuno può contraddire alle tue parole.	28 Then Uzziah said to her: "All that you have said was spoken with good sense, and no one can gainsay your words.
29 Non da oggi infatti è manifesta la tua saggezza, ma dall’inizio dei tuoi giorni tutto il popolo conosce la tua prudenza, come pure l’ottima indole del tuo cuore.	29 Not today only is your wisdom made evident, but from your earliest years all the people have recognized your prudence, which corresponds to the worthy dispositions of your heart.
30 Però il popolo sta soffrendo duramente la sete e ci ha costretti a comportarci come avevamo detto loro e a impegnarci in un giuramento che non potremo trasgredire.	30 The people, however, were so tortured with thirst that they forced us to speak to them as we did, and to bind ourselves by an oath that we cannot break.
31 Piuttosto prega per noi, tu che sei donna pia, e il Signore invierà la pioggia a riempire le nostre cisterne e così non moriremo di sete».	31 But now, God-fearing woman that you are, pray for us that the Lord may send rain to fill up our cisterns, lest we be weakened still further."
32 Giuditta rispose loro: «Ascoltatemi! Voglio compiere un’impresa che verrà ricordata di generazione in generazione ai figli del nostro popolo.	32 Then Judith said to them: "Listen to me! I will do something that will go down from generation to generation among the descendants of our race.
33 Voi starete di guardia alla porta della città questa notte; io uscirò con la mia ancella ed entro quei giorni, dopo i quali avete deciso di consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, il Signore per mano mia salverà Israele.	33 Stand at the gate tonight to let me pass through with my maid; and within the days you have specified before you will surrender the city to our enemies, the Lord will rescue Israel by my hand.
34 Voi però non fate domande sul mio progetto: non vi dirò nulla finché non sarà compiuto ciò che sto per fare».	34 You must not inquire into what I am doing, for I will not tell you until my plan has been accomplished."
35 Le risposero Ozia e i capi: «Va’ in pace e il Signore Dio sia con te per far vendetta dei nostri nemici».	35 Uzziah and the rulers said to her, "Go in peace, and may the Lord God go before you to take vengeance upon our enemies!"
36 Se ne andarono quindi dalla sua tenda e si recarono ai loro posti.	36 Then they withdrew from the tent and returned to their posts.
