1 Quando Giuditta ebbe cessato di supplicare il Dio d’Israele ed ebbe terminato di pronunciare tutte queste parole,	1 And it happened that, when she had ceased to cry out to the Lord, she arose from the place where she lay prostrate before the Lord.
2 si alzò da terra, chiamò la sua ancella e scese nella casa dove usava passare i giorni dei sabati e le feste.	2 And she called her handmaid, and descending into her house, she took away from herself the haircloth, and she put away from herself the garments of her widowhood,
3 Qui si tolse il cilicio di cui era rivestita, depose le vesti della sua vedovanza, si lavò il corpo con acqua e lo unse con profumo denso; spartì i capelli del capo e vi impose il diadema. Poi indossò gli abiti da festa, che aveva usato quando era vivo suo marito Manasse.	3 and she washed her body, and she anointed herself with the best ointment, and she plaited the hair of her head, and she put a headdress on her head, and she clothed herself with the garments of her elegance, and she put sandals on her feet, and she put on her little bracelets, and lilies, and earrings, and rings, and she adorned herself with all her ornaments.
4 Si mise i sandali ai piedi, cinse le collane e infilò i braccialetti, gli anelli e gli orecchini e ogni altro ornamento che aveva e si rese molto bella, tanto da sedurre qualunque uomo l’avesse vista.	4 And also, the Lord conferred upon her a splendor. For all this dressing up did not proceed from sensuality, but from virtue. And therefore, the Lord increased this, her beauty, so that she appeared with incomparable honor before the eyes of all.
5 Poi affidò alla sua ancella un otre di vino e un’ampolla d’olio; riempì anche una bisaccia di farina tostata, di fichi secchi e di pani puri e, fatto un involto di tutte queste provviste, glielo mise sulle spalle.	5 And so, she appointed to her handmaid a wineskin, and a vessel of oil, and parched grain, and dried figs, and bread, and cheese, and they departed.
6 Allora uscirono verso la porta della città di Betùlia e trovarono lì presenti Ozia e gli anziani della città, Cabrì e Carmì.	6 And when they came to the gate of the city, they found Uzziah and the elders of the city waiting.
7 Costoro, quando la videro trasformata nell’aspetto e con gli abiti mutati, rimasero molto ammirati della sua bellezza e le dissero:	7 And when they saw her, being astounded, they wondered at her surpassing beauty.
8 «Il Dio dei padri nostri ti conceda di trovar favore e di portare a termine quello che hai stabilito di fare, a gloria degli Israeliti e ad esaltazione di Gerusalemme».	8 So, not questioning her at all, they dismissed her to go forth, saying: “May the God of our fathers give you grace, and may he strengthen all the advice of your heart with his virtue, so that Jerusalem may glory over you, and your name may be counted among the holy and the just.”
9 Essa si chinò ad adorare Dio e rispose loro: «Fatemi aprire la porta della città e io uscirò per dare compimento alle parole che mi avete rivolto». Quelli diedero ordine ai giovani di guardia di aprirle come aveva chiesto.	9 And those who were there, all with one voice, said: “Amen. Amen.”
10 Così fecero e Giuditta uscì: lei sola e l’ancella che aveva con sé. Dalla città gli uomini la seguirono con gli sguardi mentre scendeva dal monte, finché attraversò la vallata e non poterono più scorgerla.	10 In truth, Judith was praying to the Lord as she crossed through the gates, she and her handmaid.
11 Esse andavano avanti diritte per la valle, quando si fecero loro incontro le sentinelle assire.	11 But it happened that, when she descended the mountain at about the break of day, the scouts of the Assyrians met her, and they stopped her, saying, “Where are you coming from? And where are you going?”
12 La fermarono e la interrogarono: «Di quale popolo sei, da dove vieni e dove vai?». Rispose: «Sono figlia degli Ebrei e fuggo da loro, perché stanno per esservi consegnati per essere divorati.	12 And she answered: “I am a daughter of the Hebrews. This is why I have fled from their face: because I realized that in the future they would be given over to you with pillaging, for they hold you in contempt, and they would never be willing to surrender themselves, so that they might find mercy in your sight.
13 Io quindi vengo alla presenza di Oloferne, comandante supremo dei vostri eserciti, per dargli delle informazioni sicure e mettergli sotto gli occhi la strada per cui potrà passare e impadronirsi di tutti questi monti senza che perisca uno solo dei suoi uomini».	13 For this reason, I thought to myself, saying: I will go to the face of the leader Holofernes, so that I may reveal to him their secrets, and show him by what means he may be able to prevail over them, without one man of his army being slain.”
14 Quegli uomini, quando sentirono queste parole e considerarono l’aspetto di lei, che appariva loro come un miracolo di bellezza, le dissero:	14 And when the men had heard her words, they beheld her face, and their eyes were astounded, because they wondered exceedingly at her beauty.
15 «Hai messo in salvo la tua vita, affrettandoti a scendere alla presenza del nostro signore. Vieni dunque alla tenda di lui; alcuni di noi ti accompagneranno, finché non ti abbiano affidato alle sue mani.	15 And they said to her: “You have preserved your life by following such an excellent plan, to descend to our lord.
16 Quando poi sarai alla sua presenza, non temere in cuor tuo, ma riferisci a lui quanto ci hai detto ed egli ti tratterà bene».	16 But know this, that when you will stand in his sight, he will treat you well, and you will be very pleasing to his heart.” And they led her to the tabernacle of Holofernes, announcing her.
17 Scelsero pertanto cento uomini tra loro, i quali si affiancarono a lei e alla sua ancella e le condussero alla tenda di Oloferne.	17 And when she had entered before his face, immediately Holofernes was captivated by his eyes.
18 In tutto il campo ci fu un grande accorrere, essendosi sparsa la voce del suo arrivo tra gli attendamenti. Una volta sopraggiunti, la circondarono in massa mentre era fuori della tenda di Oloferne, in attesa di essere annunciata a lui.	18 And his attendants said to him, “Who can hold the people of the Hebrews in contempt, who have such beautiful women? So, we ought to think it not worthwhile, for their sakes, to fight against them.”
19 Erano ammirati della sua bellezza e ammirati degli Israeliti a causa di lei e si dicevano l’un l’altro: «Chi disprezzerà un popolo che possiede tali donne? Sarà bene non lasciarne sopravvivere neppure uno, perché se fossero risparmiati sarebbero capaci di ingannare tutto il mondo».	19 And so, Judith looked upon Holofernes, sitting under a canopy, which was woven from purple and gold, with emeralds and precious stones.
20 Vennero fuori le guardie del corpo di Oloferne e tutti gli ufficiali e la introdussero nella sua tenda.	20 And, after she had gazed into his face, she showed reverence for him, prostrating herself to the ground. And the servants of Holofernes lifted her up, at the command of their lord.
21 Oloferne era adagiato sul suo letto, che era posto dentro una cortina intessuta di porpora ricamata d’oro, di smeraldo e di pietre preziose.
22 Gli annunciarono la presenza di lei ed egli uscì sull’ingresso della tenda, preceduto da fiaccole d’argento.
23 Quando Giuditta avanzò alla presenza di lui e dei suoi ufficiali, tutti stupirono per la bellezza del suo aspetto. Ella si prostrò con la faccia a terra per riverirlo, ma i servi la fecero rialzare.
