1 Eliasìb, sommo sacerdote, con i suoi fratelli sacerdoti si misero a costruire la porta delle Pecore. La consacrarono e vi misero i battenti; la consacrarono fino alla torre dei Cento e fino alla torre di Cananèl.	1 Eliashib the high priest with his brother priests then set to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate; they madethe framework, hung its doors, fixed its bolts and bars and proceeded as far as the Tower of the Hundred andthe Tower of Hananel.
2 Accanto a lui costruirono gli uomini di Gerico e accanto a lui costruì Zaccur, figlio di Imrì.	2 The men of Jericho built next to him; Zaccur son of Imri built next to them.
3 I figli di Senaà costruirono la porta dei Pesci, la munirono di travi e vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.	3 The sons of Ha-Senaah rebuilt the Fish Gate; they made the framework, hung its doors and fixed itsbolts and bars.
4 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Meremòt, figlio di Uria, figlio di Akkos; accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Mesullàm, figlio di Berechia, figlio di Mesezabèl; accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Sadoc, figlio di Baanà.	4 Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, carried out repairs next to them; Meshul am son of Berechiah,son of Meshezabel, carried out repairs next to him; and Zadok son of Baana carried out repairs next to him.
5 Accanto a loro lavorarono al restauro quelli di Tekòa, ma i loro notabili non piegarono il collo a lavorare all’opera del loro Signore.	5 The men of Tekoa carried out repairs next to him, though their nobles would not demean themselves tohelp their masters.
6 Ioiadà, figlio di Pasèach, e Mesullàm, figlio di Besodia, restaurarono la porta Vecchia, la munirono di travi e vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.	6 Joiada son of Paseah and Meshul am son of Besodeiah repaired the gate of the New Quarter; theymade the framework, hung its doors and fixed its bolts and bars.
7 Accanto a loro lavorarono al restauro Melatia di Gàbaon, Iadon di Meronòt e gli uomini di Gàbaon e di Mispa, alle dipendenze della sede del governatore dell’Oltrefiume.	7 Next to them repairs were carried out by Melatiah of Gibeon, Jadon of Meronoth, and the men ofGibeon and Mizpah, for the sake of the governor of Transeuphrates.
8 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Uzzièl, figlio di Caraià, uno degli orefici, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro Anania, uno dei profumieri. Essi ricostruirono Gerusalemme fino al muro largo.	8 Next to them repairs were carried out by Uzziel son of Harhaiah, a member of the metal-workers' guild,and next to him repairs were carried out by Hananiah of the perfumers' guild. These renovated the wall ofJerusalem as far as the Broad Wal .
9 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Refaià, figlio di Cur, capo della metà del distretto di Gerusalemme.	9 Next to them repairs were carried out by Rephaiah son of Hur, who was head of one half of the districtof Jerusalem.
10 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro, di fronte alla sua casa, Iedaià, figlio di Carumàf, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro Cattus, figlio di Casabnia.	10 Next to them Jedaiah son of Harumaph carried out repairs opposite his own house; next to him repairswere carried out by Hattush son of Hashabneiah.
11 Malchia, figlio di Carim, e Cassub, figlio di Pacat-Moab, restaurarono la parte seguente e la torre dei Forni.	11 Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section as far as theFurnace Tower.
12 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro, insieme con le figlie, Sallum, figlio di Allochès, capo della metà del distretto di Gerusalemme.	12 Next to them repairs were carried out by Shal um son of Hal ohesh, head of the other half of thedistrict of Jerusalem, by him and his sons.
13 Canun e gli abitanti di Zanòach restaurarono la porta della Valle; la costruirono, vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre. Fecero inoltre mille cubiti di muro fino alla porta del Letame.	13 Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Val ey Gate: they rebuilt it, hung its doors and fixedits bolts and bars; they also repaired a thousand cubits of wal up to the Dung Gate.
14 Malchia, figlio di Recab, capo del distretto di Bet-Cherem, restaurò la porta del Letame; la costruì, vi pose i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.	14 Malchijah son of Rechab, head of the district of Beth-ha-Cherem, repaired the Dung Gate; he rebuilt it,hung its doors and fixed its bolts and bars.
15 Sallum, figlio di Col-Cozè, preposto del distretto di Mispa, restaurò la porta della Fonte; la ricostruì, la munì di tetto, vi pose i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre. Fece inoltre il muro della piscina di Sìloe, presso il giardino del re, fino alla scalinata per cui si scende dalla Città di Davide.	15 Shallum son of Col-Hozeh, head of the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate; he rebuilt it,roofed it, hung its doors and fixed its bolts and bars. He also rebuilt the wal of the Pool of Siloah, adjoining theking's garden, as far as the steps going down from the City of David.
16 Dopo di lui Neemia, figlio di Azbuk, preposto della metà del distretto di Bet-Sur, lavorò al restauro fin davanti alle tombe di Davide, fino alla piscina artificiale e fino alla casa dei prodi.	16 After him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, head of half the district of Beth-Zur, carried out repairs from a pointopposite the Davidic Tombs to the artificial pool and the House of the Champions.
17 Dopo di lui lavorarono al restauro i leviti, con Recum, figlio di Banì, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro, per il suo distretto, Casabia, preposto della metà del distretto di Keila.	17 After him, repairs were carried out by the Levites: Rehum son of Bani; and next to him Hashabiah,head of one half of the district of Keilah, carried out repairs for his own district.
18 Dopo di lui lavorarono al restauro i loro fratelli, Binnùi, figlio di Chenadàd, preposto dell’altra metà del distretto di Keila.	18 After him, repairs were carried out by their brothers: Binnui son of Henadad, head of the other half ofthe district of Keilah.
19 Accanto a lui Ezer, figlio di Giosuè, preposto di Mispa, restaurò un’altra parte, di fronte alla salita dell’arsenale, sul Cantone.	19 Next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, headman of Mizpah, repaired another section in front of the ascentto the armoury at the Angle.
20 Dopo di lui Baruc, figlio di Zabbài, restaurò con impegno un’altra parte, dal Cantone fino alla porta della casa di Eliasìb, sommo sacerdote.	20 After him, Baruch son of Zabbai repaired another section from the Angle to the door of the house ofEliashib the high priest.
21 Dopo di lui Meremòt, figlio di Uria, figlio di Akkos, restaurò un’altra parte, dalla porta della casa di Eliasìb fino all’estremità della casa di Eliasìb.	21 After him, Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, repaired another section from the door of Eliashib'shouse as far as the end of Eliashib's house.
22 Dopo di lui lavorarono al restauro i sacerdoti che abitavano la periferia.	22 And after him repairs were carried out by the priests who lived in the district.
23 Dopo di loro Beniamino e Cassub lavorarono al restauro di fronte alla loro casa. Dopo di loro Azaria, figlio di Maasia, figlio di Anania, lavorò al restauro presso la sua casa.	23 After them repairs were carried out by Benjamin and Hasshub, opposite their own house. After themrepairs were carried out by Azariah son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, beside his own house.
24 Dopo di lui Binnùi, figlio di Chenadàd, restaurò un’altra parte delle mura, dalla casa di Azaria fino al Cantone e fino all’angolo.	24 After him, Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section from Azariah's house as far as the Angle atthe corner.
25 Palal, figlio di Uzài, lavorò al restauro di fronte al Cantone e alla torre sporgente dalla parte superiore della reggia, che dà sul cortile della prigione. Dopo di lui Pedaià, figlio di Paros,	25 After him, Palal son of Uzai carried out repairs in front of the Angle and the tower projecting from theking's Upper Palace by the Court of the Guard; and after him, Pedaiah son of Parosh carried out the repairs
26 e gli oblati che abitavano sull’Ofel lavorarono al restauro fin davanti alla porta delle Acque, verso oriente, e alla torre sporgente.	26 to a point by the Water Gate to the east and the projecting tower.
27 Dopo di loro quelli di Tekòa restaurarono un’altra parte, di fronte alla grande torre sporgente e fino al muro dell’Ofel.	27 After him, the men of Tekoa repaired another section from in front of the great projecting tower as faras the wal of Ophel.
28 I sacerdoti lavorarono al restauro sopra la porta dei Cavalli, ciascuno di fronte alla propria casa.	28 From the Horse Gate onwards repairs were carried out by the priests, each in front of his own house.
29 Dopo di loro lavorò al restauro Sadoc, figlio di Immer, di fronte alla sua casa, e dopo di lui Semaià, figlio di Secania, custode della porta Orientale.	29 After them repairs were carried out by Zadok son of Immer in front of his house, and after him repairswere carried out by Shemaiah son of Shechaniah, keeper of the East Gate.
30 Dopo di lui Anania, figlio di Selemia, e Canun, sesto figlio di Salaf, restaurarono un’altra parte. Dopo di loro Mesullàm, figlio di Berechia, lavorò al restauro di fronte alla propria stanza.	30 After him Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun sixth son of Zalaph repaired another section, afterwhom repairs were carried out by Meshul am son of Berechiah in front of his room.
31 Dopo di lui Malchia, uno degli orefici, lavorò al restauro fino alla casa degli oblati e dei mercanti, di fronte alla porta della Rassegna e fino al vano superiore dell’angolo.	31 After him Malchijah, of the metal-workers' guild, repaired as far as the Hal of the temple slaves andmerchants, in front of the Muster Gate, as far as the upper room at the corner.
32 Gli orefici e i mercanti lavorarono al restauro fra il vano superiore dell’angolo e la porta delle Pecore.	32 And between the upper room at the corner and the Sheep Gate repairs were carried out by thegoldsmiths and the merchants.
33 Sanballàt, quando sentì che noi riedificavamo le mura, si adirò, si indignò molto, si fece beffe dei Giudei	33 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wal , he became furiously angry.
34 e disse in presenza dei suoi fratelli e dei soldati di Samaria: «Che vogliono fare questi miserabili Giudei? Dobbiamo lasciarli fare? Offriranno sacrifici? Finiranno in un sol giorno? Vogliono far rivivere da mucchi di polvere delle pietre già consumate dal fuoco?».	34 He ridiculed the Jews and in front of his kinsmen and the aristocracy of Samaria he exclaimed, 'Whatare these pathetic Jews doing . . . ? Are they going to give up? Or offer sacrifices? Or complete the work in aday? Can they put new life into stones taken from rubbish heaps and even charred?'
35 Tobia l’Ammonita, che gli stava accanto, disse: «Edifichino pure! Se una volpe vi salta sopra, farà crollare il loro muro di pietra!».	35 And beside him Tobiah of Ammon remarked, 'If a jackal were to jump on what they are building, itwould knock their stone wal down!'
36 Ascolta, o nostro Dio, come siamo disprezzati! Fa’ ricadere sul loro capo l’insulto e abbandonali al saccheggio in un paese di schiavitù!	36 Listen, our God, for we are despised! Make their sneers fal back on their own heads! Send them asbooty to a land of captivity!
37 Non coprire la loro colpa e non sia cancellato dalla tua vista il loro peccato, perché hanno offeso i costruttori.	37 Do not pardon their wickedness, may their sin never be erased before you, for they have insulted thebuilders to their face!
38 Noi dunque ricostruimmo le mura, che furono ben consolidate fino a metà altezza, e al popolo stava a cuore il lavoro.	38 Meanwhile we were rebuilding the wal , which was soon joined up al the way round to mid-height; thepeople put their hearts into the work.
