1 Eliasìb, sommo sacerdote, con i suoi fratelli sacerdoti si misero a costruire la porta delle Pecore. La consacrarono e vi misero i battenti; la consacrarono fino alla torre dei Cento e fino alla torre di Cananèl.	1 Eliashib the high priest and his priestly brethren took up the task of rebuilding the Sheep Gate. They timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, then continued the rebuilding to the Tower of Hananel.
2 Accanto a lui costruirono gli uomini di Gerico e accanto a lui costruì Zaccur, figlio di Imrì.	2 At their side the men of Jericho were rebuilding, and next to them was Zaccur, son of Imri.
3 I figli di Senaà costruirono la porta dei Pesci, la munirono di travi e vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.	3 The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah; they timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.
4 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Meremòt, figlio di Uria, figlio di Akkos; accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Mesullàm, figlio di Berechia, figlio di Mesezabèl; accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Sadoc, figlio di Baanà.	4 At their side Meremoth, son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, carried out the work of repair; next to him was Meshullam, son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel; and next to him was Zadok, son of Baana.
5 Accanto a loro lavorarono al restauro quelli di Tekòa, ma i loro notabili non piegarono il collo a lavorare all’opera del loro Signore.	5 Next to him the Tekoites carried out the work of repair; however, some of their outstanding men would not submit to the labor asked by their lords.
6 Ioiadà, figlio di Pasèach, e Mesullàm, figlio di Besodia, restaurarono la porta Vecchia, la munirono di travi e vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.	6 The New City Gate was repaired by Joiada, son of Paseah; and Meshullam, son of Besodeiah; they timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.
7 Accanto a loro lavorarono al restauro Melatia di Gàbaon, Iadon di Meronòt e gli uomini di Gàbaon e di Mispa, alle dipendenze della sede del governatore dell’Oltrefiume.	7 At their side were Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, and the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, who were under the jurisdiction of the governor of West-of-Euphrates.
8 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Uzzièl, figlio di Caraià, uno degli orefici, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro Anania, uno dei profumieri. Essi ricostruirono Gerusalemme fino al muro largo.	8 Next to them the work of repair was carried out by Uzziel, son of Harhaiah, a member of the goldsmiths' guild, and at his side was Hananiah, one of the perfumers' guild. They restored Jerusalem as far as the wall of the public square.

10 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro, di fronte alla sua casa, Iedaià, figlio di Carumàf, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro Cattus, figlio di Casabnia.	10 and at his side was Jedaiah, son of Harumaph, who repaired opposite his own house. Next to him Hattush, son of Hashabneiah, carried out the work of repair.
11 Malchia, figlio di Carim, e Cassub, figlio di Pacat-Moab, restaurarono la parte seguente e la torre dei Forni.	11 The adjoining sector, as far as the Oven Tower, was repaired by Malchijah, son of Harim, and Hasshub, of Pahath-moab.

13 Canun e gli abitanti di Zanòach restaurarono la porta della Valle; la costruirono, vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre. Fecero inoltre mille cubiti di muro fino alla porta del Letame.	13 The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah; they rebuilt it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars. They also repaired a thousand cubits of the wall up to the Dung Gate.
14 Malchia, figlio di Recab, capo del distretto di Bet-Cherem, restaurò la porta del Letame; la costruì, vi pose i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.	14 The Dung Gate was repaired by Malchijah, son of Rechab, leader of the district of Beth-haccherem; he rebuilt it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.
15 Sallum, figlio di Col-Cozè, preposto del distretto di Mispa, restaurò la porta della Fonte; la ricostruì, la munì di tetto, vi pose i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre. Fece inoltre il muro della piscina di Sìloe, presso il giardino del re, fino alla scalinata per cui si scende dalla Città di Davide.	15 The Spring Gate was repaired by Shallum, son of Colhozeh, leader of the district of Mizpah; he rebuilt it, roofed it over, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars. He also repaired the wall of the Aqueduct Pool near the king's garden as far as the steps that lead down from the City of David.
16 Dopo di lui Neemia, figlio di Azbuk, preposto della metà del distretto di Bet-Sur, lavorò al restauro fin davanti alle tombe di Davide, fino alla piscina artificiale e fino alla casa dei prodi.	16 After him, the work of repair was carried out by Nehemiah, son of Azbuk, leader of half the district of Beth-zur, to a place opposite the tombs of David, as far as the artificial pool and the barracks.
17 Dopo di lui lavorarono al restauro i leviti, con Recum, figlio di Banì, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro, per il suo distretto, Casabia, preposto della metà del distretto di Keila.	17 After him, the Levites carried out the work of repair: Rehum, son of Bani. 28 I sacerdoti lavorarono al restauro sopra la porta dei Cavalli, ciascuno di fronte alla propria casa.	28 Above the Horse Gate the priests carried out the work of repair, each before his own house.
29 Dopo di loro lavorò al restauro Sadoc, figlio di Immer, di fronte alla sua casa, e dopo di lui Semaià, figlio di Secania, custode della porta Orientale.	29 After them Zadok, son of Immer, carried out the repair before his house, and after him the repair was carried out by Shemaiah, son of Shecaniah, keeper of the East Gate.
30 Dopo di lui Anania, figlio di Selemia, e Canun, sesto figlio di Salaf, restaurarono un’altra parte. 31 Dopo di lui Malchia, uno degli orefici, lavorò al restauro fino alla casa degli oblati e dei mercanti, di fronte alla porta della Rassegna e fino al vano superiore dell’angolo.	31 After him, Malchijah, a member of the goldsmiths' guild, carried out the work of repair as far as the quarters of the temple slaves and the merchants, before the Gate of Inspection and as far as the upper chamber of the Angle.
32 Gli orefici e i mercanti lavorarono al restauro fra il vano superiore dell’angolo e la porta delle Pecore.	32 Between the upper chamber of the Angle and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants carried out the work of repair.
33 Sanballàt, quando sentì che noi riedificavamo le mura, si adirò, si indignò molto, si fece beffe dei Giudei	33 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, it roused his anger and he became very much incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,
34 e disse in presenza dei suoi fratelli e dei soldati di Samaria: «Che vogliono fare questi miserabili Giudei? Dobbiamo lasciarli fare? Offriranno sacrifici? Finiranno in un sol giorno? Vogliono far rivivere da mucchi di polvere delle pietre già consumate dal fuoco?».	34 saying in the presence of his brethren and the troops of Samaria: "What are these miserable Jews trying to do? Will they complete their restoration in a single day? Will they recover these stones, burnt as they are, from the heaps of dust?"
35 Tobia l’Ammonita, che gli stava accanto, disse: «Edifichino pure! Se una volpe vi salta sopra, farà crollare il loro muro di pietra!».	35 Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said: "It is a rubble heap they are building. Any fox that attacked it would breach their wall of stones!"
36 Ascolta, o nostro Dio, come siamo disprezzati! Fa’ ricadere sul loro capo l’insulto e abbandonali al saccheggio in un paese di schiavitù!	36 Take note, O our God, how we were mocked! Turn back their derision upon their own heads and let them be carried away to a land of captivity!
37 Non coprire la loro colpa e non sia cancellato dalla tua vista il loro peccato, perché hanno offeso i costruttori.	37 Hide not their crime and let not their sin be blotted out in your sight, for they insulted the builders to their face!
38 Noi dunque ricostruimmo le mura, che furono ben consolidate fino a metà altezza, e al popolo stava a cuore il lavoro.	38 We, however, continued to build the wall, which was soon filled in and completed up to half its height. The people worked with a will.
