1 Giòsafat, re di Giuda, tornò in pace a casa in Gerusalemme.

| 2 Il veggente Ieu, figlio di Canàni, gli andò incontro e disse a Giòsafat: "Si doveva forse recare aiuto a un empio? Potevi dunque amare coloro che odiano il Signore? Per questo lo sdegno del Signore è contro di te. | 2 But Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to King Jehoshaphat, "Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the LORD. |
3 Tuttavia in te si sono trovate cose buone, perché hai bruciato i pali sacri nella regione e hai rivolto il tuo cuore alla ricerca di Dio".
| 3 Nevertheless some good is found in you, for you destroyed the Asherahs out of the land, and have set your heart to seek God." |
| 4 Giòsafat, dopo un soggiorno in Gerusalemme, si recò di nuovo fra il suo popolo da Bersabea alle montagne di Èfraim, riportandolo al Signore, Dio dei loro padri. | 4 Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem; and he went out again among the people, from Beer-sheba to the hill country of Ephraim, and brought them back to the LORD, the God of their fathers. |

| 6 Ai giudici egli raccomandò: "Guardate a quello che fate, perché non giudicate per gli uomini, ma per il Signore, il quale sarà con voi quando pronunzierete la sentenza. | 6 and said to the judges, "Consider what you do, for you judge not for man but for the LORD; he is with you in giving judgment. |
7 Ora il timore del Signore sia con voi; nell'agire badate che nel Signore nostro Dio non c'è nessuna iniquità; egli non ha preferenze personali né accetta doni".
| 7 Now then, let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed what you do, for there is no perversion of justice with the LORD our God, or partiality, or taking bribes." |
| 8 Anche in Gerusalemme Giòsafat costituì alcuni leviti, sacerdoti e capifamiglia di Israele, per dirimere le questioni degli abitanti di Gerusalemme. | 8 Moreover in Jerusalem Jehoshaphat appointed certain Levites and priests and heads of families of Israel, to give judgment for the LORD and to decide disputed cases. They had their seat at Jerusalem. |
| 9 Egli comandò loro: "Voi agirete nel timore del Signore, con fedeltà e con cuore integro. | 9 And he charged them: "Thus you shall do in the fear of the LORD, in faithfulness, and with your whole heart: |
| 10 Su ogni causa che vi verrà presentata da parte dei vostri fratelli che abitano nelle loro città - si tratti di omicidio o di una questione che riguarda la legge o un comando, gli statuti o i decreti - istruiteli in modo che non si rendano colpevoli davanti al Signore e il suo sdegno non si riversi su di voi e sui vostri fratelli. Agite così e non diventerete colpevoli. | 10 whenever a case comes to you from your brethren who live in their cities, concerning bloodshed, law or commandment, statutes or ordinances, then you shall instruct them, that they may not incur guilt before the LORD and wrath may not come upon you and your brethren. Thus you shall do, and you will not incur guilt. |
| 11 Ecco Amaria sommo sacerdote vi guiderà in ogni questione religiosa, mentre Zebadia figlio di Ismaele, capo della casa di Giuda, vi guiderà in ogni questione che riguarda il re; in qualità di scribi sono a vostra disposizioni i leviti. Coraggio, mettetevi al lavoro. Il Signore sarà con il buono". | 11 And behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the governor of the house of Judah, in all the king's matters; and the Levites will serve you as officers. Deal courageously, and may the LORD be with the upright!" |
