| 1 « Quando Jahve tuo Dio avrà eliminato le nazioni, delle quali Jahve tuo Dio ti sta per assegnare la terra, quando tu abiterai nelle loro città e nelle loro case, | 1 When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses; |
| 2 in mezzo alla terra che Jahve tuo Dio sta per darti in possesso, ti sceglierai tre città; | 2 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it. |
| 3 ne sistemerai il cammino, dividerai in tre parti il territorio della terra che Jahve tuo Dio ti darà in eredità: qui si potrà rifugiare ogni omicida. | 3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither. |
| 4 Questo è il caso in cui l’omicida vi si può rifugiare e salvare la vita: quando uno colpirà il suo prossimo inavvertitamente, senza aver avuto prima odio contro di lui. | 4 And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past; |
| 5 Come quando uno va nel bosco con il suo prossimo a tagliare legna e, mentre la mano è diretta con l’accetta a recidere un albero, il ferro sfugge dal manico e quegli colpisce il suo prossimo che muore: quegli può rifugiarsi in una di quelle città e salvarsi la vita. | 5 As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live: |
| 6 Affinchè il vendicatore del sangue, con il cuore bollente, non insegua l’omicida e, qualora il cammino sia lungo, non lo raggiunga colpendo la sua persona: questi infatti non è reo di morte poichè egli prima non aveva odio contro di lui. | 6 Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past. |
| 7 Per questo io ti ordino: “ Scegliti tre città ”, | 7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee. |
| 8 Se, come ha giurato ai tuoi padri, Jahve tuo Dio amplierà i tuoi confini e ti concederà tutta la terra che ha promesso di dare ai tuoi padri, | 8 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers; |
| 9 poichè tu avrai osservato, mettendoli in pratica, tutti questi precetti che oggi ti prescrivo, amando Jahve tuo Dio e seguendo ogni giorno le sue vie, allora tu a quelle tre aggiungerai altre tre città. | 9 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three: |
| 10 Così non si spargerà sangue innocente in mezzo alla terra che Jahve tuo Dio sta per assegnarti in eredità, nè su di te ci sarà sangue. | 10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee. |
| 11 Ma se qualcuno odia il suo prossimo e gli prepara un’insidia, si leva contro di lui, lo, colpisce e questi muore, ed egli poi si rifugia in una di quelle città, | 11 But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities: |
| 12 gli anziani della sua città manderanno a prenderlo di là, lo consegneranno in mano al vendicatore del sangue affinchè quegli muoia. | 12 Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. |
| 13 Il tuo occhio non avrà misericordia di lui; ma sterminerai il sangue dell’innocente da Israele e sarai felice. | 13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee. |
| 14 Nella proprieà che erediterai sulla terra che Jahve tuo Dio sta per farti possedere, non sposterai i confini del tuo vicino, quelli che hanno posto gli antenati. | 14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it. |
| 15 Un solo testimonio non può bastare per incolpare un uomo di una qualsiasi colpa e di un qualsiasi peccato; per un qualsiasi peccato che uno può commettere, il fatto sarà stabilito sulla parola di due testimoni o sulla parola di tre testimoni. | 15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established. |
| 16 Se un testimonio ingiusto si leva a testimoniare contro un uomo per defezione, | 16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; |
| 17 tutti e due gli uomini tra i quali vi è la contesa compariranno al cospetto di Jahve, davanti ai sacerdoti e ai giudici che saranno in carica in quei giorni. | 17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; |
| 18 Essi indagheranno con cura e, se apparirà che è una testimonianza menzognera quella che il testimonio falso ha deposto contro il fratello, | 18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; |
| 19 farete a lui quanto egli tramava di fare al fratello. Così sterminerai il male in mezzo a te. | 19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. |
| 20 Gli altri lo sapranno, ne avranno paura e non commetteranno di nuovo in mezzo a te un’azione cattiva come questa. | 20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you. |
| 21 Il tuo occhio non avrà misericordia: una persona per una persona, un occhio per un occhio, un dente per un dente, una mano per una mano, un piede per un piede ». | 21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. |
