| 1 « Ama perciò Jahve tuo Dio e osserva ogni giorno la sua osservanza, i suoi statuti, !suoi decreti e i suoi precetti. | 1 'You must love Yahweh your God and always keep his observances, his laws, his customs, hiscommandments. |
| 2 Oggi voi conoscete. E infatti i vostri figli non hanno conosciuto e visto la disciplina di Jahve vostro Dio, la sua grandezza, la forza della sua mano e il suo braccio teso: | 2 You are the ones who have had the experience, not your children. They have not had the experience,they have not witnessed the lessons of Yahweh your God, his greatness, his mighty hand and his outstretchedarm, |
| 3 i segni e le opere che ha compiuto in Egitto contro il Faraone, re d’Egitto e contro tutta la sua terra, | 3 the signs and the deeds which he performed in the heart of Egypt, against Pharaoh king of Egypt andhis entire country, |
| 4 ciò che Jahve ha fatto all’esercito d’Egitto, ai suoi cavalli e ai suoi carri, facendo rifluire su di essi le acque del Mare dei Giunchi, mentre vi stavano inseguendo e li ha annientati fino a oggi; | 4 what he did to the armies of Egypt, to their horses and their chariots, by overwhelming them with thewaters of the Sea of Reeds when they were pursuing you, and leaving no trace of them to this day; |
| 5 essi non hanno visto quanto fece per voi nel deserto fino vostro arrivo in questo luogo: | 5 what he did for you in the desert, until you arrived here; |
| 6 ciò che fece a Datan e Abiram, figli di Eliab, figlio di Ruben,quando la terra ha. aperto la bocca e li ha inghiottiti, in mezzo a tutto Israele, con le famiglie, le tende e ciò che apparteneva a essi, | 6 what he did to Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when, with al Israel standinground, the earth opened its mouth and swal owed them, with their families, their tents and al their supporters. |
| 7 ma i vostri occhi hanno visto la grande opera che Jahve ha compiuto. | 7 Al these great deeds of Yahweh you have seen with your own eyes. |
| 8 Osservate perciò tutto l’ordinamento che oggi vi prescrivo chè possiate essere forti ed entrare in possesso della terra di cui andate a impadronirvi, | 8 'You must keep al the commandments which I enjoin on you today, so that you may have the strengthto conquer the country into which you are about to cross, to take possession of it, |
| 9 e affinchè dimoriate a lungo sul suolo che Jahve ha giurato di dare ai vostri padri e est loro discendenza, terra dove scorre latte e miele. | 9 and so that you may live long in the country which Yahweh promised on oath to bestow on yourancestors and their descendants, a country flowing with milk and honey. |
| 10 Poichè la terra di cui tu entri in possesso non è come la terra d’Egitto, donde siete usciti, dove seminavi la tua semente e che innaffiavi con il piede come un giardino da erbaggi. | 10 'For the country which you are about to enter and make your own is not like the country of Egyptfrom which you have come, where, having done your sowing, you had to water the seed by foot, as though in avegetable garden. |
| 11 Invece, la terra di cui entrate in possesso è una terra di montagne e di valli che si disseta di acqua con la pioggia del cielo; | 11 No, the country which you are about to enter and make your own, is a country of hills and val eyswatered by the rain of heaven. |
| 12 una terra di cui ha cura Jahve tuo Dio: su di essa si posano continuamente gli occhi di Jahve tuo Dio dall’inizio dell’anno fino al suo termine. | 12 Yahweh your God looks after this country, the eyes of Yahweh your God are always on it, from thebeginning of the year to the end. |
| 13 Certo, se veramente ascolterete i precetti che oggi vi prescrivo, amando Jahve vostro Dio e rendendogli un culto con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima, | 13 Depend on it: if you faithfully obey the commandments I enjoin on you today, loving Yahweh yourGod and serving him with al your heart and al your soul, |
| 14 darò a tempo opportuno alla vostra terra la pioggia, la prima pioggia e l’ultima, così che potrai raccogliere il tuo frumento, il tuo mosto e il tuo olio nuovo, | 14 I shal give your country rain at the right time, rain in autumn, rain in spring, so that you can harvestyour wheat, your new wine and your oil. |
| 15 e al tuo campo darò erba per il tuo bestiame: tu mangerai e ti sentirai soddisfatto. | 15 I shal provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat to your heart's content. |
| 16 Guardate che il vostro cuore non sia sedotto: deviereste, rendereste culto ad altri dèi, vi prostrereste innanzi a loro | 16 Beware of letting your heart be seduced: if you go astray, serve other gods and bow down to them, |
| 17 e l’ira di Jahve si accenderebbe contro di voi: chiuderebbe il cielo, non vi sarebbe più pioggia, il suolo non darebbe più i suoi prodotti e rapidamente scomparireste dalla buona terra che Jahve sta per concedervi. | 17 Yahweh's anger wil be kindled against you, he wil shut the heavens, there wil be no more rain, thesoil wil not yield its produce and, in the fine country given you by Yahweh, you wil quickly perish. |
| 18 Ponete, dunque, queste mie parole sul vostro cuore e sulla vostra anima, legatele come segno sulle vostre mani e siano come pendenti tra i vostri occhi. | 18 'Let these words of mine remain in your heart and in your soul; fasten them on your hand as a signand on your forehead as a headband. |
| 19 Insegnatele ai vostri figli Parlando di esse quando ti trovi in casa, quando cammini per strada, quando sei coricato e quando sei in piedi; | 19 Teach them to your children, and keep on tel ing them, when you are sitting at home, when you areout and about, when you are lying down and when you are standing up. |
| 20 le scriverai sugli stipiti della tua casa e sulle tue porte: | 20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, |
| 21 così i tuoi giorni e i giorni dei tuoi figli sul suolo che Jahve ha giurato di concedere ai vostri padri si moltiplicheranno come i giorni del cielo sopra la terra. | 21 so that you and your children may live long in the country which Yahweh swore to your ancestorsthat he would give them for as long as there is a sky above the earth. |
| 22 Poichè se, veramente, osserverete tutto questo ordinamento che oggi vi prescrivo di lira care, amando Jahve vostro Dio, camminando integralmente sul suo cammino e aderendo a lui, | 22 'For if you faithful y keep and observe al these commandments that I enjoin on you today, lovingYahweh your God, following all his ways and holding fast to him, |
| 23 Jahve caccerà tutte quelle nazioni innanzi a voi e voi vi impadronirete di nazioni più grandi e potenti di voi. | 23 Yahweh wil dispossess al these nations before you, and you wil dispossess nations greater andmore powerful than yourselves. |
| 24 Sarà vostro ogni luogo che la pianta dei vostri piedi calcherà: i vostri confini saranno dal deserto al Libano, dal fiume, il fiume Eufrate, al Mare Occidentale. | 24 Wherever the sole of your foot treads wil be yours; your territory will run from the desert al the wayto the Lebanon; and from the River, from the River Euphrates, as far as the Western Sea, wil be your territory. |
| 25 Nessuno potrà resistere contro di te; Jahve vostro Dio vi renderà spavento e terrore di ogni terra che calcherete, come vi ha promesso. | 25 No one wil be able to resist you; Yahweh your God will make you feared and dreaded throughout theterritory you tread, as he has promised you. |
| 26 Vedi, oggi io pongo innanzi a voi benedizione e maledizione: | 26 'Today, look, I am offering you a blessing and a curse: |
| 27 benedizione se obbedirete ai precetti di Jahve vostro Dio, che oggi vi prescrivo; | 27 a blessing, if you obey the commandments of Yahweh your God which I enjoin on you today; |
| 28 maledizione, se non obbedirete ai precetti di Jahve vostro Dio e devierete dal cammino che oggi vi prescrivo, seguendo altri dèi che non avete conosciuto. | 28 a curse, if you disobey the commandments of Yahweh your God and leave the way which today Ihave marked out for you, by following other gods hitherto unknown to you. |
| 29 Quando Jahve tuo Dio ti avrà introdotto nella terra della quale vai a prendere possesso, tu porrai la benedizione sul monte Garizim e la maledizione sul monte Ebal. | 29 And when Yahweh your God has brought you into the country which you are about to enter andmake your own, you must set the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. |
| 30 Questi monti non si trovano forse al di là del Giordano, dietro il cammino del tramonto del sole nella terra del Cananeo che abita l’Araba, di fronte a Galgala presso le querce di More? | 30 (These mountains, as everyone knows, are on the other side of the Jordan on the westward road, inthe territory of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, near the Oak of Moreh.) |
| 31 Voi, infatti, state per attraversare il Giordano per entrare in possesso della terra che vi concede Jahve vostro Dio: voi ne prenderete possesso, dimorerete in essa | 31 For you are about to cross the Jordan, to enter and take possession of the country given you byYahweh your God. You wil possess it, you wil live in it, |
| 32 e baderete di eseguire tutti gli statuti e i decreti che oggi espongo a voi ». | 32 and you must keep and observe al the laws and customs promulgated by me to you today.' |
