| 1 Allora il giusto si drizzerà con molta libertà innanzi a coloro che lo hanno oppresso e hanno vilipeso le sue pene. | 1 Then shall the just one with great assurance confront his oppressors who set at nought his labors. |
| 2 Vedendo saranno turbati da un timore orribile, e stupiranno per l’inaspettata salvezza. | 2 Seeing this, they shall be shaken with dreadful fear, and amazed at the unlooked-for salvation. |
| 3 Diranno dentro di sè, pensando diversamente e affannati nell’intimo gemeranno: | 3 They shall say among themselves, rueful and groaning through anguish of spirit: "This is he whom once we held as a laughingstock and as a type for mockery, |
| 4 « Questi è colui che un tempo abbiamo deriso e oltraggiato. Insensati! Giudicammo la sua vita una pazzia e la sua morte ignominiosa. | 4 fools that we were! His life we accounted madness, and his death dishonored. |
| 5 Come mai egli è annoverato tra i figli di Dio ed è toccata a lui la sorte tra i santi? | 5 See how he is accounted among the sons of God; how his lot is with the saints! |
| 6 Noi errammo lontani dalla via della verità, e il lume della giustizia non brillò per noi, e il sole non venne a sorgere! | 6 We, then, have strayed from the way of truth, and the light of justice did not shine for us, and the sun did not rise for us. |
| 7 Ci siamo saziati delle vie inique e perdute e abbiamo percorso deserti senza piste, abbiamo ignorato il cammino del Signore. | 7 We had our fill of the ways of mischief and of ruin; we journeyed through impassable deserts, but the way of the LORD we knew not. |
| 8 Che cosa ci è giovato l’orgoglio, e che cosa ci hanno portato le ricchezze e il vanto? | 8 What did our pride avail us? What have wealth and its boastfulness afforded us? |
| 9 Tutto questo è passato come un’ombra e come un messaggio veloce! | 9 All of them passed like a shadow and like a fleeting rumor; |
| 10 Come nave che fende l’onda agitata e di cui, dopo il passaggio, non si può trovare traccia, nè la scia della carena nei flutti. | 10 Like a ship traversing the heaving water, of which, when it has passed, no trace can be found, no path of its keel in the waves. |
| 11 O come dell’uccello che vola per l’aria non si trova indizio di cammino; eppure l’aria leggera, percossa dal battito delle ali e divisa per forza d’impeto, è stata attraversata dalle ali agitate e dopo non si trova in essa indizio di passaggio. | 11 Or like a bird flying through the air; no evidence of its course is to be found- But the fluid air, lashed by the beat of pinions, and cleft by the rushing force Of speeding wings, is traversed: and afterward no mark of passage can be found in it. |
| 12 O come di una freccia scagliata al bersaglio: divisa l’aria, ritorna subito al suo stato, così che si ignora il passaggio di quella. | 12 Or as, when an arrow has been shot at a mark, the parted air straightway flows together again so that none discerns the way it went through- |
| 13 Ugualmente noi, appena nati, abbiamo cessato di essere, e non abbiamo potuto mostrare segni di virtù e ci siamo spenti invece, nella nostra malizia ». | 13 Even so we, once born, abruptly came to nought and held no sign of virtue to display, but were consumed in our wickedness." |
| 14 Ora la speranza dell’empio è come pula portata dal vento, o come schiuma che si disperde nella procella; ed essa si dissipa come il fumo al vento, e si dilegua come la memoria dell’ospite di un sol giorno. | 14 Yes, the hope of the wicked is like thistledown borne on the wind, and like fine, tempest-driven foam; Like smoke scattered by the wind, and like the passing memory of the nomad camping for a single day. |
| 15 I giusti, invece, vivono per sempre e la loro ricompensa è nel Signore, e la loro preoccupazione è presso l’Altissimo! | 15 But the just live forever, and in the LORD is their recompense, and the thought of them is with the Most High. |
| 16 Così essi ricevono un regno splendido e un diadema meraviglioso dalla mano del Signore, che li protegge con la destra e li difende con il braccio. | 16 Therefore shall they receive the splendid crown, the beauteous diadem, from the hand of the LORD- For he shall shelter them with his right hand, and protect them with his arm. |
| 17 Egli prenderà per armi il suo zelo e armerà il creato per la vendetta contro i nemici; | 17 He shall take his zeal for armor and he shall arm creation to requite the enemy; |
| 18 si vestirà di giustizia come di corazza, e si cingerà del giudizio non ipocrita come di elmo; | 18 He shall don justice for a breastplate and shall wear sure judgment for a helmet; |
| 19 come scudo imbraccerà una inattaccabile santità | 19 He shall take invincible rectitude as a shield |
| 20 e affilerà l’ira severa come spada. E l’universo combatterà al suo fianco conti i dementi: | 20 and whet his sudden anger for a sword, And the universe shall war with him against the foolhardy. |
| 21 partiranno saette ben dirette, i lampi e dalle nubi, come da arco curvato a misura, voleranno nel segno, | 21 Well-aimed shafts of lightnings shall go forth and from the clouds as from a well-drawn bow shall leap to the mark; |
| 22 dalla fionda delle nuvole saranno scagliate grandini piene di furore; e l’acqua del mare infierirà coi flutti contro di essi e i fiumi, gonfi, dilagheranno. | 22 and as from his sling, wrathful hailstones shall be hurled. The water of the sea shall be enraged against them and the streams shall abruptly overflow; |
| 23 Li avvolgerà un soffio fortissimo e, qual turbine, li disperderà. Così l'iniquità desolerà tutta la terra, e il cattivo agire rovescierà i troni dei potenti! | 23 A mighty wind shall confront them and a tempest winnow them out; Thus lawlessness shall lay the whole earth waste and evildoing overturn the thrones of potentates. |
