| 2 Sotto il governo dei giusti il popolo si rallegra, ma quando comanda un empio il popolo sospira. | 2 When the upright are on the increase, the people rejoice; when the wicked are in power, the peoplegroan. |
| 3 Chi ama la saggezza rallegra il padre; chi frequenta le prostitute dilapida le sue sostanze. | 3 The lover of Wisdom makes his father glad, but the patron of prostitutes fritters his wealth away. |
| 4 Un re con la giustizia consolida il paese, ma chi riceve regali lo rovina. | 4 A king gives a country stability by justice, an extortioner brings it to ruin. |
| 5 L’uomo che adula il prossimo gli tende un laccio sui suoi passi. | 5 Whoever flatters his companion spreads a net for his feet. |
| 6 Sul sentiero dell’uomo malvagio c’è un laccio, ma il giusto canta e si rallegra. | 6 In the sin of the wicked lies a snare, but the upright exults and rejoices. |
| 7 Il giusto si prende a cuore la causa dei deboli; l’empio non ha alcun criterio. | 7 The upright understands the cause of the weak, the wicked has not the wit to understand it. |
| 8 Gli uomini insolenti turbano la città; i saggi, invece, calmano i furori. | 8 Scoffers set a city in ferment, but the wise moderate anger. |
| 9 Se un uomo saggio litiga con uno stolto, sì adiri o scherzi, non avrà fine. | 9 Let someone wise argue with a fool, anger and good humour alike wil be wasted. |
| 10 L’uomo sanguinario odia l’uomo integro, ma gli uomini retti hanno cura della sua vita. | 10 The bloodthirsty hate the honest, but the upright seek them out. |
| 11 Lo stolto dà sfogo a tutta la sua ira, ma il saggio la frena. | 11 The fool blurts out every angry feeling, but the wise subdues and restrains them. |
| 12 Un principe che dà retta alle parole di menzogna avrà servitori tutti empi. | 12 When a ruler listens to false reports, al his ministers wil be scoundrels. |
| 13 Il povero e l’usuraio si incontrano: Jahvè illumina gli occhi di tutti e due. | 13 Poor and oppressor are found together, Yahweh gives light to the eyes of both. |
| 14 Il re che fa giustizia con lealtà ai deboli avrà il trono sempre fermo. | 14 The king who judges the weak with equity sees his throne set firm for ever. |
| 15 Verga e correzione danno sapienza, ma il fanciullo lasciato a se stesso fa la vergogna della madre. | 15 The stick and the reprimand bestow wisdom, a young man left to himself brings shame on his mother. |
| 16 Quando crescono gli empi cresce l’iniquità ma i giusti ne vedranno la rovina. | 16 When the wicked are on the increase, sin multiplies, but the upright wil witness their downfal . |
| 17 Correggi tuo figlio e ti farà contento; egli darà consolazione alla tua anima. | 17 Correct your child, and he wil give you peace of mind; he will delight your soul. |
| 18 Quando mancano le visioni il popolo è sfrenato; ma chi osservà la legge, beato lui! | 18 Where there is no vision the people get out of hand; happy are they who keep the law. |
| 19 Con sole parole non si corregge uno schiavo, perché egli intende ma non obbedisce. | 19 Not by words is a slave corrected: even if he understands, he will take no notice. |
| 20 Hai visto l’uomo precipitoso nel parlare? C'è più da sperare da uno stolto che da lui. | 20 You see someone too ready of speech? There is more to be hoped for from a fool! |
| 21 Chi accarezza lo schiavo quando è giovane, questi alla fine diventerà padrone. | 21 If a slave is pampered from childhood, he wil prove ungrateful in the end. |
| 22 L’uomo collerico suscita risse e l’iracondo fa molti affronti. | 22 The hot-head provokes disputes, someone in a rage commits al sorts of sins. |
| 23 L’orgoglio causa umiliazioni all’uomo, ma chi è umile di spirito ne avrà gloria. | 23 Pride brings humiliation, whoever humbles himself will win honour. |
| 24 Chi divide con il ladro odia la sua anima; egli ode l’imprecazione e non parla. | 24 To hear the curse and disclose nothing is to share with the thief and to hate oneself. |
| 25 Chi teme gli uomini cade in un laccio, ma chi confida in Jahvè è al sicuro. | 25 To be afraid of human beings is a snare, whoever trusts in Yahweh is secure. |
| 26 Molti cercano il favore del principe, ma da Jahvè dipende il giudizio di ciascuno. | 26 Many people seek a ruler's favour, but the rights of each come from Yahweh. |
| 27 L’uomo iniquo è in abominio ai giusti, e chi cammina rettamente è in abominio all’empio. | 27 Abhorrent to the upright is the sinful, abhorrent to the wicked is one whose way is straight. |
