1 Dopo non molto, il re mandò un vecchio Ateniese per costringere i Giudei ad abbandonare le leggi patrie e a non governarsi secondo le leggi di Dio,	1 Shortly afterwards, the king sent Gerontes the Athenian to force the Jews to violate their ancestralcustoms and live no longer by the laws of God;
2 a profanare il tempio di Gerusalemme, a dedicarlo a Giove Olimpio e quello di Garizim a Giove Ospitale, secondo il carattere degli abitanti del luogo.	2 and to profane the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicate it to Olympian Zeus, and the one on MountGerizim to Zeus, Patron of Strangers, as the inhabitants of the latter place had requested.
3 Grave e a tutti insopportabile era una tale invasione di mali.	3 The advent of these evils was painful y hard for al the people to bear.
4 Il tempio, infatti, fu pieno della lussuria e delle crapule dei Gentili che vi tripudiavano con le prostitute e nei sacri portici si univano con le donne introducendovi pratiche sconvenienti.	4 The Temple was fil ed with revel ing and debauchery by the gentiles, who took their pleasure withprostitutes and had intercourse with women in the sacred precincts, introducing other indecencies besides.
5 L'altare era pieno di cose abominevoli, proibite dalle leggi.	5 The altar of sacrifice was loaded with victims proscribed by the law as profane.
6 Non si poteva celebrare il sabato nè osservare le feste dei padri; insomma uno non poteva neppure dichiararsi Giudeo.	6 No one might either keep the Sabbath or observe the traditional feasts, or so much as admit to being aJew.
7 Nel giorno natalizio del re, per dura necessità i Giudei venivano condotti ogni mese ad assistere al sacrificio e, quando si celebravano le feste dionisiache, erano costretti ad andare in processione coronati di edera in onore di Dioniso.	7 People were driven by harsh compulsion to take part in the monthly ritual meal commemorating theking's birthday; and when a feast of Dionysus occurred, they were forced to wear ivy wreaths and walk in theDionysiac procession.
8 Uscì, poi, un decreto per istigazione dei Tolemaidesi, diretto alle vicine città ellenistiche, affinchè anch’esse usassero la stessa condotta con i Giudei, perchè li facessero partecipare ai banchetti sacri	8 A decree was issued at the instance of the people of Ptolemais for the neighbouring Greek cities,enforcing the same conduct on the Jews there, obliging them to share in the sacrificial meals,
9 e quelli non disposti a passare alle usanze elleniche fossero uccisi. Allora si potè constatare tutta la calamità incombente.	9 and ordering the execution of those who would not voluntarily conform to Greek customs. So it becameclear that disaster was imminent.
10 Due donne furono denunciate perchè avevano circonciso i figli. Dopo avere legato al petto i loro figli e averle fatte girare pubblicamente così per la città, le precipitarono dalle mura.	10 For example, two women were charged with having circumcised their children. They were paradedpublicly round the town, with their babies hung at their breasts, and then hurled over the city wal .
11 Altri, che si erano riuniti nelle vicine caverne per celebrare in segreto il sabato, denunciati a Filippo, vi furono bruciati vivi, poichè non vollero difendersi a causa della grande solennità del giorno.	11 Other people, who had assembled in some near-by caves to keep the seventh day without attractingattention, were denounced to Philip, and were then al burnt to death together, since their consciences would notal ow them to defend themselves, out of respect for the holiness of the day.
12 Ora io prego coloro che si imbatteranno in questo libro di non scandalizzarsi per tali avversità, ma di credere che le nostre sofferenze non sono per nostra rovina, ma solo per un giusto castigo della nostra gente.	12 Now, I urge anyone who may read this book not to be dismayed at these calamities, but to reflect thatsuch visitations are intended not to destroy our race but to discipline it.
13 Infatti, il non lasciare impuniti per molto tempo i peccatori, ma subito affliggerli con castighi è segno di grande benevolenza.	13 Indeed, when evil-doers are not left for long to their own devices but incur swift retribution, it is a signof great benevolence.
14 Mentre con gli altri popoli il Signore aspetta pazientemente per punirli quando sono giunti alla pienezza delle colpe, con noi ha deciso di comportarsi diversamente.	14 In the case of other nations, the Master waits patiently for them to attain the ful measure of their sinsbefore he punishes them, but with us he has decided to deal differently,
15 Egli non aspetta a punirci, quando i nostri peccati siano giunti al colmo.	15 rather than have to punish us later, when our sins come to ful measure.
16 Perciò egli non ritira mai da noi la sua misericordia; anche se punisce con avversità, non abbandona mai il suo popolo.	16 And so he never entirely withdraws his mercy from us; he may discipline us by some disaster, but hedoes not desert his own people.
17 Ciò sia detto per ricordare questa verità. Ora bisogna ritornare alla narrazione dopo queste poche parole.	17 Let this be said simply by way of reminder; we must return to our story without more ado.
18 Eleazaro, uno dei principali scribi, uomo già avanzato negli anni e dall’aspetto venerando, era costretto ad aprire la bocca e a mangiare carne suina.	18 Eleazar, one of the foremost teachers of the Law, a man already advanced in years and of most nobleappearance, had his mouth forced open, to make him eat a piece of pork.
19 Egli, però, preferendo una morte gloriosa a una vita ignominiosa si incamminò volontariamente al supplizio,	19 But he, resolving to die with honour rather than to live disgraced, walked of his own accord to thetorture of the wheel,
20 dopo avere sputato fuori la carne, come dovrebbero fare quanti con coraggio intendono astenersi da ciò che non è lecito gustare per amore della vita.	20 having spat the stuff out, as befits those with the courage to reject what is not lawful to taste, ratherthan live.
21 Coloro che erano incaricati dell’empio banchetto, per la vecchia amicizia verso l’uomo, presolo in disparte, lo esortavano a farsi portare carni, di cui era permesso l’uso e che lui Stesso aveva preparato, e così fingere di mangiare, secondo l’editto del re, quelle sacrificate,	21 The people supervising the ritual meal, forbidden by the Law, because of the length of time for whichthey had known him, took him aside and privately urged him to have meat brought of a kind he could properlyuse, prepared by himself, and only pretend to eat the portions of sacrificial meat as prescribed by the king;
22 affinchè, ciò facendo, scampasse dalla morte e approfittasse di questo favore dovuto alla loro antica amicizia.	22 this action would enable him to escape death, by availing himself of an act of kindness prompted bytheir long friendship.
23 Ma egli prese una risoluzione generosa, degna dell’età, della vecchiaia veneranda, dei capelli ormai bianchi, della condotta irreprensibile fino da fanciullo e, in modo particolare, delle sante leggi stabilite da Dio. Conseguentemente rispose subito che avrebbe preferito di essere mandato all’Ade.	23 But having taken a noble decision worthy of his years and the dignity of his great age and the wel -earned distinction of his grey hairs, worthy too of his impeccable conduct from boyhood, and above al of theholy legislation established by God himself, he answered accordingly, telling them to send him at once to Hades.
24 « Poichè » egli diceva «non è degno della nostra età il fingere in modo che molti giovani, credendo che il nonagenario Eleazaro sia passato alle usanze straniere,	24 'Pretence', he said, 'does not befit our time of life; many young people would suppose that Eleazar atthe age of ninety had conformed to the foreigners' way of life
25 sarebbero indotti in errore da me a causa della mia finzione e dell’amore a una esistenza breve e precaria; così io mi acquisterei onta e obbrobrio nella vecchiaia.	25 and, because I had played this part for the sake of a paltry brief spel of life, might themselves be ledastray on my account; I should only bring defilement and disgrace on my old age.
26 Poichè, anche se ora sfuggissi ai supplizi degli uomini, non sfuggirei mai nè vivo nè morto alle mani dell’Onnipotente.	26 Even though for the moment I avoid execution by man, I can never, living or dead, elude the grasp ofthe Almighty.
27 Perciò, rinunciando ora coraggiosamente a questa vita, mi mostrerò degno della mia età	27 Therefore if I am man enough to quit this life here and now, I shal prove myself worthy of my old age,
28 e lascerò un nobile esempio ai giovani, cioè di morire con prontezza e coraggio per le leggi sacrosante ». Ciò detto, subito si avviò al supplizio.	28 and I shal have left the young a noble example of how to make a good death, eagerly andgenerously, for the venerable and holy laws.' So saying, he walked straight to the wheel,
29 Coloro che ve lo conducevano, al sentire queste parole, cambiarono la simpatia di poco prima in avversione, perchè credevano che le suddette parole fossero una vera pazzia.	29 while those who were escorting him, recently so wel disposed towards him, turned against him afterthis declaration, which they regarded as sheer madness.
30 Stando per morire sotto i colpi, egli disse gemendo: « Al Signore, dotato di una santa scienza, è noto che, potendomi liberare dalla morte, sopporto nel corpo gli atroci dolori della flagellazione, ma nell’animo volentieri soffro questo per il suo timore ».	30 He for his part, just before he died under the blows, gave a sigh and said, 'The Lord whose knowledgeis holy sees clearly that, though I might have escaped death, from awe of him I gladly endure these agonies ofbody under the lash, and that in my soul I am glad to suffer.'
31 In tal modo egli lasciò la vita, lasciando non solo ai giovani, ma anche alla maggior parte della nazione, un esempio di coraggio e un ricordo di fortezza con la sua morte.	31 This was how he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a record of virtue not only forthe young but for the greater part of the nation.
