| 1 Dopo l’agitazione, quando tornò la calma tra coloro che stavano in cerchio intorno all'assemblea, Oloferne, generale in capo dell’esercito di Assur, alla presenza di ogni popolo di diversa stirpe e di tutti i figli di Moab, si rivolse ad Achior e disse: | 1 When the noise of the crowd surrounding the council had subsided, Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, said to Achior, in the presence of the whole throng of coastland peoples, of the Moabites, and of the Ammonite mercenaries: |
| 2 « Chi sei tu, Achior, e voi mercenari di Efraim, per impancarti, oggi come oggi, a profeta tra noi e suggerire di non combattere contro la stirpe di Israele? Il loro Dio si farebbe il loro scudo? Ma chi è Dio se non Nabucodonosor? Questi sferrerà l’attacco, li farà sparire dalla faccia della terra e il loro Dio non li salverà; | 2 "Who are you, Achior, to prophesy among us as you have done today, and to tell us not to fight against the Israelites because their God protects them? What god is there beside Nebuchadnezzar? He will send his force and destroy them from the face of the earth. Their God will not save them; |
| 3 ma noi, suoi servitori, li colpiremo come si colpisce un uomo solo e non sosterranno l’impeto della nostra cavalleria: | 3 but we, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, will strike them down as one man, for they will be unable to withstand the force of our cavalry. |
| 4 con essa li inonderemo, i loro monti saranno inebriati del loro sangue, le loro pianure saranno un cumulo di cadaveri. Innanzi a noi non rimarranno salde le piante dei loro piedi, ma saranno completamente distrutti, dice il re Nabucodonosor, il signore di tutta la terra. Così infatti egli ha parlato: non andranno a vuoto le parole dei suoi discorsi. | 4 We will overwhelm them with it, and the mountains shall be drunk with their blood, and their plains filled with their corpses. Not a trace of them shall survive our attack: they shall utterly perish, says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he has spoken, and his words shall not remain unfulfilled. |
| 5 E tu, Achior, mercenario di Ammon, che così hai parlato nel giorno della tua malvagità, d’ora innanzi non vedrai la mia faccia, finchè non mi sarò preso vendetta della stirpe di questi fuorusciti dall’Egitto. | 5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, for saying these things in a moment of perversity you shall not see my face after today, until I have taken revenge on this race of people from Egypt. |
| 6 Allora la spada dei miei soldati e tutta la moltitudine di coloro che stanno ai miei ordini ti trapasserà i fianchi e tu soccomberai in mezzo ai feriti di quella gente, quando ritornerò indietro. | 6 Then at my return, the sword of my army or the spear of my servants will pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their slain. |
| 7 Per ora i miei servitori ti collocheranno sulla regione montuosa e ti lasceranno in una delle città dei versanti di essa: | 7 My servants will now conduct you to the mountain region, and leave you at one of the towns along the ascent. |
| 8 non perirai finchè non sarai sterminato con quella gente. | 8 You shall not die till you are destroyed together with them. |
| 9 Se nel tuo cuore nutri la speranza che essa non sia presa, non si abbassi la tua fronte! Ho finito: nessuna delle mie parole cadrà senza effetto ». | 9 If you still cherish the hope that they will not be taken, then there is no need for you to be downcast. I have spoken, and my words shall not prove false in any respect." |
| 10 Oloferne quindi diede ordine ai servitori che stazionavano presso la sua tenda, di prendere Achior, portarlo a Betulia e consegnarlo nelle mani dei figli di Israele. | 10 Then Holofernes ordered the servants who were standing by in his tent to seize Achior, conduct him to Bethulia, and hand him over to the Israelites. |
| 11 Essi lo presero, lo condussero fuori dell’accampamento verso la pianura, dalla pianura lo trascinarono verso la regione montuosa e arrivarono presso le sorgenti che erano sotto Betulia. | 11 So the servants took him in custody and brought him out of the camp into the plain. From there they led him into the mountain region till they reached the springs below Bethulia. |
| 12 Quando gli uomini della città li videro, impugnarono le armi, uscirono fuori della città verso la vetta della montagna, mentre tutti i frombolieri presidiavano la via d’accesso e lanciavano pietre contro di essi. | 12 When the men of the city saw them, they seized their weapons and ran out of the city to the crest of the ridge; and all the slingers blocked the ascent of Holofernes' servants by hurling stones upon them. |
| 13 Questi allora piegarono sotto il monte e, legato Achior e lasciatolo disteso alle falde del monte, ritornarono dal loro signore. | 13 So they took cover below the mountain, where they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the mountain; then they returned to their lord. |
| 14 Scesi dalla loro città, i figli di Israele gli si avvicinarono, lo slegarono, lo condussero a Betulia e lo posero innanzi agli arconti della loro città, | 14 The Israelites came down to him from their city, loosed him, and brought him into Bethulia. They haled him before the rulers of the city, |
| 15 che in quei giorni erano Ozia figlio di Michea, della tribù di Simeone, Chabris figlio di Gotoniel e Charmis figlio di Melchiel. | 15 who in those days were Uzziah, son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris, son of Gothoniel, and Charmis, son of Melchiel. |
| 16 Convocarono tutti gli anziani della città: tutti i giovani e le donne accorsero all’adunanza. Collocarono Achior in mezzo a tutto il popolo e Ozia cominciò a interrogarlo su quanto gli era successo. | 16 They then convened all the elders of the city; and all their young men, as well as the women, gathered in haste at the place of assembly. They placed Achior in the center of the throng, and Uzziah questioned him about what had happened. |
| 17 Achior rispose riferendo tutto quanto era stato detto nell’assemblea di Oloferne: come egli Stesso si era espresso in mezzo ai capi di Assur e con quale orgoglio Oloferne aveva parlato contro la casa di Israele. | 17 He replied by giving them an account of what was said in the council of Holofernes, and of all his own words among the Assyrian officers, and of all the boasting threats of Holofernes against the house of Israel. |
| 18 Allora il popolo, prostratosi, adorò Dio e gridò: | 18 At this the people fell prostrate and worshiped God; and they cried out: |
| 19 « Signore, Dio del cielo, guarda l’orgoglio di questa gente, abbi pietà dell’umiliazione della nostra stirpe, mira in questo giorno la faccia di coloro che sono stati consacrati a te ». | 19 "Lord, God of heaven, behold their arrogance! Have pity on the lowliness of our people, and look with favor this day on those who are consecrated to you." |
| 20 Consolarono poi Achior e lo lodarono molto; | 20 Then they reassured Achior and praised him highly. |
| 21 Ozia dall’adunanza se lo portò a casa sua e offrì un banchetto agli anziani. Per tutta quella notte invocarono l’aiuto del Dio di Israele. | 21 Uzziah brought him from the assembly to his home, where he gave a banquet for the elders. That whole night they called upon the God of Israel for help. |
