| 1 Dopo molto tempo, nel terzo anno, fu rivolta la parola di Jahvè a Elia: «Va’ a farti vedere da Akhab, perché voglio concedere la pioggia alla superficie del suolo». | 1 After many days the word of the LORD came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth." |
| 2 Elia andò pertanto a mostrarsi ad Akhab. La carestia era molto grave a Samaria. | 2 So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. |
| 3 Akhab chiamò Abdia, che era il sovrintendente della reggia. Abdia temeva molto Jahvè. | 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah revered the LORD greatly; |
| 4 Infatti, quando Gezabele voleva sterminare i profeti di Jahvè, egli ne prese cento, li nascose cinquanta alla volta nella caverna e li mantenne a pane e acqua. | 4 and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) |
| 5 Akhab dunque disse ad Abdia: «Orsù, andiamo per il paese a visitare le sorgenti d’acqua e i torrenti; forse troveremo un po’ d’erba e così terremo in vita i cavalli e i muli né dovremo uccidere il bestiame». | 5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys; perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals." |
| 6 Si divisero il paese da perlustrare; Akhab se ne andò da una parte per conto suo e Abdia se ne andò da un’altra. | 6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it; Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself. |
| 7 Ora, mentre Abdia era in cammino, ecco farglisi incontro Elia. Quegli lo riconobbe. e cadde con la faccia a terra, dicendo: «Sei proprio tu il mio signore Elia?» | 7 And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him; and Obadiah recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, "Is it you, my lord Elijah?" |
| 8 Gli rispose: «Sono io! Va’ a dire al tuo signore che Elia è qui». | 8 And he answered him, "It is I. Go, tell your lord, 'Behold, Elijah is here.'" |
| 9 L’altro replicò: «Che male ho fatto perché tu consegni il tuo servitore in mano ad Akhab per mettermi a morte? | 9 And he said, "Wherein have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? |
| 10 Per la vita di Jahvè tuo Dio! Non c'è gente o regno, dove il mio signore non ti abbia mandato a cercare; se sì diceva: “Non c'è egli faceva giurare quel regno o quella gente di non averti trovato. | 10 As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom whither my lord has not sent to seek you; and when they would say, 'He is not here,' he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you. |
| 11 Ora tu mi comandi: «“Va’ a dire al tuo signore che Elia è qui!”. | 11 And now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here."' |
| 12 Poi, quando mi sarò allontanato da te e lo spirito di Jahvè ti trasporterà non so dove, andrò intanto ad annunciarti ad Akhab il quale, non trovandoti, mi ucciderà. Eppure il tuo servitore teme Jahvè fino dalla giovinezza! | 12 And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the LORD will carry you whither I know not; and so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have revered the LORD from my youth. |
| 13 Forse non è stato riferito al mio signore ciò che ho fatto quando Gezabele voleva sterminare i profeti di Jahvè, come ne nascosi cento nella caverna, cinquanta per volta, e li ho mantenuti a pane e acqua? | 13 Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? |
| 14 Ora tu mi comandi: “Va’ a dire al tuo signore che Elia è qui”; così egli mi ucciderà!» | 14 And now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here"'; and he will kill me." |
| 15 Ma Elia soggiunse: «Per la vita di Jahvè degli eserciti davanti al quale sto: oggi stesso comparirò innanzi a lui!» | 15 And Elijah said, "As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today." |
| 16 Abdia andò incontro al re e gli riferì. Akhab allora si mosse verso Elia. | 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah. |
| 17 Appena Akhab vide Elia, gli disse: «Sei tu colui che mette in subbuglio Israele?» | 17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is it you, you troubler of Israel?" |
| 18 Ma quegli rispose: «Non io ho messo in subbuglio Israele, ma tu stesso e la casa di tuo padre, perché avete abbandonato Jahvè vostro Dio e hai seguito i Baal. | 18 And he answered, "I have not troubled Israel; but you have, and your father's house, because you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals. |
| 19 Ebbene, chiama a raccolta presso di me sul monte Carmelo tutto Israele e i quattrocentocinquanta profeti di Baal, i quali mangiano alla mensa di Gezabele». | 19 Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table." |
| 20 Akhab mandò a chiamare tutti i figli di Israele e radunò i profeti sul monte Carmelo. | 20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel, and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. |
| 21 Elia si accostò a tutto il popolo e disse: «Fino a quando andrete zoppicando da tutt’e due i piedi? Se Jahvè è Dio, seguitelo; se lo è Baal, andate dietro a lui». Il popolo non gli rispose neppure una parola. | 21 And Elijah came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." And the people did not answer him a word. |
| 22 Elia riprese a dire popolo: «Io solo sono rimasto come profeta di Jahvè, mentre i profeti di Baal sono quattrocentocinquanta! | 22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men. |
| 23 Datemi due giovenchi; loro se ne scelgano uno, lo facciano a pezzi e lo pongano sulla legna, senza accendervi il fuoco. Io preparerò l’altro giovenco senza appiccarvi il fuoco. | 23 Let two bulls be given to us; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it; and I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, and put no fire to it. |
| 24 Voi invocherete il nome del vostro dio mentre io invocherò il nome di Jahvè. Il dio che risponderà con il fuoco è Dio!» Allora il popolo rispose: «Ben detto!» | 24 And you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, he is God." And all the people answered, "It is well spoken." |
| 25 Poi Elia disse ai profeti di Baal: «Sceglietevi un giovenco e fate voi per primi, perché siete in molti. Invocate il nome del vostro dio, ma non appiccate il fuoco». | 25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it." |
| 26 Quelli presero il giovenco, lo prepararono e invocarono il nome di Baal dal mattino fino a mezzogiorno, dicendo: «O Baal, rispondici!» Nessuna voce, nessuna risposta! E danzavano zoppicando di fronte all’altare che avevano costruito. | 26 And they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped about the altar which they had made. |
| 27 A mezzogiorno Elia cominciò a beffarsi di loro: «Gridate più forte. Lui è certamente dio; ma forse è occupato, ha dovuto assentarsi o è in viaggio; forse sta dormendo e deve essere svegliato!» | 27 And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, "Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened." |
| 28 Quelli si misero a gridare più forte e a incidersi, alla loro maniera, con spade e lance, finché non grondarono di sangue. | 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. |
| 29 Passato mezzogiorno, continuarono a farneticare fino al tempo dell’oblazione. Ma neppure una voce; nessuno che rispondesse o prestasse attenzione! | 29 And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice; no one answered, no one heeded. |
| 30 Allora Elia disse a tutto il popolo: «Accostatevi a me!» Tutto il popolo si accostò a lui ed egli rimise in piedi l’altare di Jahvè, che era stato demolito. | 30 Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me"; and all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down; |
| 31 Quindi Elia prese dodici pietre, secondo il numero delle tribù dei figli di Giacobbe, cui Jahvè aveva detto: «Israele sarà il tuo nome!» | 31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, "Israel shall be your name"; |
| 32 Con le pietre edificò un altare al nome di Jahvè e costruì un fosso intorno all’altare, della capacità di due sea di semente. | 32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. |
| 33 Dispose la legna, fece a pezzi il giovenco e lo pose sopra la legna. | 33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, "Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the wood." |
| 34 Poi ordinò: «Riempite quattro brocche di acqua, versatela sopra la vittima e sopra la legna». L’ordine fu eseguito; poi soggiunse: «Ripetete la cosa». Fu fatto per la seconda volta. Continuò: «Per la terza volta!» Lo fecero per la terza volta. | 34 And he said, "Do it a second time"; and they did it a second time. And he said, "Do it a third time"; and they did it a third time. |
| 35 L’acqua scorreva intorno all’altare; anche il fosso fu da lui riempito di acqua. | 35 And the water ran round about the altar, and filled the trench also with water. |
| 36 Giunto il tempo dell’oblazione, il profeta Elia si accostò e disse: «Jahvè Dio di atrio, di Isacco e di Israele, oggi appaia che tu sei Dio in Israele, che io sono il tuo servitore e che la tua parola ha compiuto queste cose. | 36 And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. |
| 37 Esaudiscimi, o Jahvè, esaudiscimi affinché questo popolo sappia che tu sei Dio, o Jahvè, e hai permesso che il loro cuore si pervertisse». | 37 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that thou, O LORD, art God, and that thou hast turned their hearts back." |
| 38 Allora cadde il fuoco di Jahvè, che consumò l’olocausto, la legna, le pietre e la. polvere, prosciugando l’acqua del fosso. | 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. |
| 39 A tale vista, tutto il popolo cadde con la faccia a terra, esclamando: «Jahvè è Dio, Jahvè è Dio!» | 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, "The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God." |
| 40 Allora Elia parlò loro: «Prendete i profeti di Baal; non ne sfugga neppure uno!» Li presero ed Elia li condusse giù al torrente Kishon, dove li sgozzò. | 40 And Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape." And they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there. |
| 41 Quindi Elia disse ad Akhab: «Risali, mangia e bevi, perché già si ode il rumore della pioggia». | 41 And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of the rushing of rain." |
| 42 Akhab risalì per mangiare e bere, mentre Elia, raggiunta la cima del Carmelo, si piegò a terra, ponendo la faccia tra le ginocchia. | 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees. |
| 43 Poi disse al suo servitore: «Orsù, va’ a vedere dalla parte del mare». Quegli andò, osservò e riferì: «Non c’è nulla!» Elia replicò: «Ritornaci sette volte!» E il servitore vi ritornò sette volte. | 43 And he said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." And he went up and looked, and said, "There is nothing." And he said, "Go again seven times." |
| 44 Alla settima volta, quegli riferì: «Ecco una nuvoletta, come un palmo umano, salire dal mare». Disse allora Elia: «Va’ a dire ad Akhab che attacchi i cavalli e scenda, affinché la pioggia non lo sorprenda». | 44 And at the seventh time he said, "Behold, a little cloud like a man's hand is rising out of the sea." And he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.'" |
| 45 Poco alla volta il cielo si oscurò per le nubi e per il vento, e la pioggia cominciò a cadere dirotta. Akhab montò sul carro e andò a Jizreel. | 45 And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. |
| 46 La mano di Jahvè fu sopra Elia, che si cinse i fianchi e corse dinanzi ad Akhab fino all’ingresso di Jizreel. | 46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. |
