1 Il existe, pour l'argent, des mines, pour l'or, un lieu où on l'épure.	1 There is indeed a mine for silver, and a place for gold which men refine.
2 Le fer est tiré du sol, la pierre fondue livre du cuivre.	2 Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is melted out of stone.
3 On met fin aux ténèbres, on fouille jusqu'à l'extrême limite la pierre obscure et sombre.	3 He has set a boundary for the darkness; to the farthest confines he penetrates.
4 Des étrangers percent les ravins en des lieux non fréquentés, et ils oscillent, suspendus, loin deshumains.
5 La terre d'où sort le pain est ravagée en dessous par le feu.	5 The earth, though out of it comes forth bread, is in fiery upheaval underneath.
6 Là, les pierres sont le gisement du saphir, et aussi des parcelles d'or.	6 Its stones are the source of sapphires, and there is gold in its dust.
7 L'oiseau de proie en ignore le sentier, l'oeil du vautour ne l'aperçoit pas.	7 The path to it no bird of prey knows, nor has the hawk's eye seen that path.
8 Il n'est point foulé par les fauves altiers, le lion ne l'a jamais frayé.	8 The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the lion gone that way.
9 L'homme s'attaque au silex, il bouleverse les montagnes dans leurs racines.	9 He sets his hand to the flinty rock, and overturns the mountains at their foundations.
10 Dans les roches il perce des canaux, l'oeil ouvert sur tout objet précieux.	10 He splits channels in the rocks; his eyes behold all that is precious.
11 Il explore les sources des fleuves, amène au jour ce qui restait caché.	11 He probes the wellsprings of the streams, and brings hidden things to light.
12 Mais la Sagesse, d'où provient-elle? Où se trouve-t-elle, l'Intelligence?	12 But whence can wisdom be obtained, and where is the place of understanding?
13 L'homme en ignore le chemin, on ne la découvre pas sur la terre des vivants.	13 Man knows nothing to equal it, nor is it to be had in the land of the living.
14 L'Abîme déclare: "Je ne la contiens pas!" et la Mer: "Elle n'est point chez moi!"	14 The abyss declares, "It is not in me"; and the sea says, "I have it not."
15 On ne peut l'acquérir avec l'or massif, la payer au poids de l'argent,	15 Solid gold cannot purchase it, nor can its price be paid with silver.
16 l'évaluer avec l'or d'Ophir, l'agate précieuse ou le saphir.	16 It cannot be bought with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx or the sapphire.
17 On ne lui compare pas l'or ou le verre, on ne l'échange point contre un vase d'or fin.	17 Gold or crystal cannot equal it, nor can golden vessels reach its worth.
18 Coraux et cristal ne méritent pas mention, mieux vaudrait pêcher la Sagesse que les perles.	18 Neither coral nor jasper should be thought of; it surpasses pearls and
19 Auprès d'elle, la topaze de Kush est sans valeur et l'or pur perd son poids d'échange.	19 Arabian topaz.
20 Mais la Sagesse, d'où provient-elle? Où se trouve-t-elle, l'Intelligence?	20 Whence, then, comes wisdom, and where is the place of understanding?
21 Elle se dérobe aux yeux de tout vivant, elle se cache aux oiseaux du ciel.	21 It is hid from the eyes of any beast; from the birds of the air it is concealed.
22 La Perdition et la Mort déclarent: "La rumeur de sa renommée est parvenue à nos oreilles."	22 Abaddon and Death say, "Only by rumor have we heard of it."
23 Dieu seul en a discerné le chemin et connu, lui, où elle se trouve.	23 God knows the way to it; it is he who is familiar with its place.
24 (Car il voit jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, il aperçoit tout ce qui est sous les cieux.)	24 For he beholds the ends of the earth and sees all that is under the heavens.
25 Lorsqu'il voulut donner du poids au vent, jauger les eaux avec une mesure;	25 He has weighed out the wind, and fixed the scope of the waters;
26 quand il imposa une loi à la pluie, une route aux roulements du tonnerre,	26 When he made rules for the rain and a path for the thunderbolts,
27 alors il la vit et l'évalua, il la pénétra et même la scruta.	27 Then he saw wisdom and appraised it, gave it its setting, knew it through and through.
28 Puis il dit à l'homme: "La crainte du Seigneur, voilà la sagesse; fuir le mal, voilà l'intelligence."	28 And to man he said: Behold, the fear of the LORD is wisdom; and avoiding evil is understanding.
