Proverbios 22

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Más vale buen nombre que muchas riquezas, y mejor es favor que plata y oro.	1 Fame is preferable to great wealth, favour, to silver and gold.
2 El rico y el pobre se encuentran, a los dos los hizo Yahveh.	2 Rich and poor rub shoulders, Yahweh has made them both.
3 El hombre precavido ve el mal y se esconde, los simples pasan y reciben castigo.	3 The discreet sees danger and takes shelter, simpletons go ahead and pay the penalty.
4 Premio de la humildad, el temor de Yahveh, la riqueza, el honor y la vida.	4 The reward of humility is the fear of Yahweh, and riches, honour and life.
5 Espinas y lazos en la senda del malo, el que cuida de su vida, se aleja de ellos.	5 Thorns and snares line the path of the wilful, whoever values life will stay at a distance.
6 Instruye al joven según sus disposiciones, que luego, de viejo, no se apartará de ellas.	6 Give a lad a training suitable to his character and, even when old, he wil not go back on it.
7 El rico domina a los pobres, el deudor es esclavo de su acreedor.	7 The rich lords it over the poor, the borrower is the lender's slave.
8 Quien siembra injusticia cosecha miserias y la vara de su cólera desaparecerá.	8 Whoever sows injustice reaps disaster, and the rod of such anger wil disappear.
9 El de buena intención será bendito, porque da de su pan al débil.	9 A kindly eye wil earn a blessing, such a person shares out food with the poor.
10 Expulsa al arrogante y se irá el litigio, y pleitos e injurias cesarán.	10 Expel the mocker and strife goes too, law-suits and dislike die down.
11 El que ama los corazones puros, el de gracia en los labios, es amigo del rey.	11 Whoever loves the pure of heart and is gracious of speech has the king for a friend.
12 Los ojos de Yahveh custodian la ciencia, pero confunden las palabras del pérfido.	12 Yahweh's eyes protect knowledge, but he confounds deceitful speeches.
13 El perezoso dice: «Hay fuera un león; voy a ser muerto en medio de la calle».	13 'There is a lion outside,' says the idler, 'I shal be kil ed in the street!'
14 Fosa profunda la boca de las mujeres ajenas: aquel contra el que Yahveh se aíra, caerá en ella.	14 The mouth of an adulterous woman is a deep pit, into it fal s the man whom Yahweh rebukes.
15 La necedad está enraizada en el corazón del joven, la vara de la instrucción lo alejará de ella.	15 Fol y is anchored in the heart of a youth, the whip of instruction wil rid him of it.
16 El que oprime a un débil, lo engrandece; el que da a un rico, llega a empobrecerlo.	16 Harsh treatment enriches the poor, but a gift impoverishes the rich.
17 Presta oído y escucha las palabras de los sabios, y aplica tu corazón a mi ciencia,	17 Give ear, listen to the sayings of the sages, and apply your heart to what I know,
18 porque te será dulce guardarlas en tu seno, y tener todas a punto en tus labios.	18 for it wil be a delight to keep them deep within you to have them al ready on your lips.
19 Para que esté en Yahveh tu confianza también a ti hoy te enseñaré.	19 So that your trust may be in Yahweh, it is you whom I wish to instruct today.
20 ¿No he escrito para ti treinta capítulos de consejos y ciencia,	20 Have I not written for you thirty chapters of advice and knowledge,
21 para hacerte conocer la certeza de las palabras verdaderas, y puedas responder palabras verdaderas a quien te envíe?	21 to make you know the certainty of true sayings, so that you can return with sound answers to thosewho sent you?
22 No despojes al débil, porque es débil, y no aplastes al desdichado en la puerta,	22 Do not despoil the weak, for he is weak, and do not oppress the poor at the gate,
23 porque Yahveh defenderá su causa y despojará de la vida a los despojadores.	23 for Yahweh takes up their cause, and extorts the life of their extortioners.
24 No tomes por compañero a un hombre airado, ni vayas con un hombre violento,	24 Do not make friends with one who gives way to anger, make no one quick-tempered a companion ofyours,
25 no sea que aprendas sus senderos, y te encuentres con un lazo para tu vida.	25 for fear you learn such behaviour and in it find a snare for yourself.
26 No seas de los que chocan la mano, y salen fiadores de préstamos:	26 Do not be one of those who go guarantor, who go surety for debts:
27 porque si no tienes con qué pagar, te tomarán el lecho en que te acuestas.	27 if you have no means of paying your bed wil be taken from under you.
28 No desplaces el lindero antiguo que tus padres pusieron.	28 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone set by your ancestors.
29 ¿Has visto un hombre hábil en su oficio? Se colocará al servicio de los reyes. No quedará al servicio de gentes oscuras.	29 You see someone alert at his business? His aim wil be to serve kings; not for him the service of theobscure.
