NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Fratres, voluntas quidem cordis mei et obsecratio ad Deum pro illis insalutem.1 Brothers, my dearest wish and my prayer to God is for them, that they may be saved.
I readily testify to their fervour for God, but it is misguided.
Not recognising God's saving justice they have tried to establish their own, instead of submitting tothe saving justice of God.
4 finis enim legis Christus adiustitiam omni credenti.
4 But the Law has found its fulfilment in Christ so that al who have faith wil be justified.
5 Moyses enim scribit de iustitia, quae ex lege est: “ Qui fecerit homo, vivetin eis ”.5 Moses writes of the saving justice that comes by the Law and says that whoever complies with it wilfind life in it.
6 Quae autem ex fide est iustitia, sic dicit: “ Ne dixeris incorde tuo: Quis ascendet in caelum?”, id est Christum deducere;6 But the saving justice of faith says this: Do not think in your heart, 'Who wil go up to heaven?' --
7 aut: “Quis descendet in abyssum? ”, hoc est Christum ex mortuis revocare.7 that is to bring Christ down; or 'Who wil go down to the depths?' -- that is to bring Christ back fromthe dead.
8 Sed quiddicit? “ Prope te est verbum, in ore tuo et in corde tuo ”; hoc est verbumfidei, quod praedicamus.8 What does it say, then? The word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, theword of faith, the faith which we preach,
9 Quia si confitearis in ore tuo: “ Dominum Iesum!”, et in corde tuo credideris quod Deus illum excitavit ex mortuis, salvuseris.9 that if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe with your heart that Godraised him from the dead, then you wil be saved.
It is by believing with the heart that you are justified, and by making the declaration with your lipsthat you are saved.
11 Dicit enim Scriptura:
“ Omnis, qui credit in illo, non confundetur ”.
11 When scripture says: No one who relies on this wil be brought to disgrace,
12 it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: the same Lord is the Lord of all, and his generosityis offered to al who appeal to him,
13 Omnis enim, quicumque invocaverit nomen Domini, salvus erit.
13 for al who cal on the name of the Lord wil be saved.
14 Quomodo ergo invocabunt, in quem non crediderunt? Aut quomodo credent ei,quem non audierunt? Quomodo autem audient sine praedicante?14 How then are they to call on him if they have not come to believe in him? And how can they believein him if they have never heard of him? And how wil they hear of him unless there is a preacher for them?
15 Quomodo veropraedicabunt nisi mittantur? Sicut scriptum est:
“ Quam speciosi pedes evangelizantium bona ”.
15 And how wil there be preachers if they are not sent? As scripture says: How beautiful are the feet ofthe messenger of good news.
“ Domine, quis credidit auditui nostro? ”.
16 But in fact they have not all responded to the good news. As Isaiah says: Lord, who has givencredence to what they have heard from us?
17 But it is in that way faith comes, from hearing, and that means hearing the word of Christ.
18 Sed dico: Numquid non audierunt? Quin immo,
in omnem terram exiit sonus eorum,
et in fines orbis terrae verba eorum.
18 Wel then, I say, is it possible that they have not heard? Indeed they have: in the entire earth theirvoice stands out, their message reaches the whole world.
19 Sed dico: Numquid Israel non cognovit? Primus Moyses dicit:
“ Ego ad aemulationem vos adducam per Non gentem:
per gentem insipientem ad iram vos provocabo ”.
19 Wel , another question, then: is it possible that Israel did not understand? In the first place Mosessaid: I shal rouse you to jealousy with a non-people, I shal exasperate you with a stupid nation.
20 Isaias autem audet et dicit: “ Inventus sum in non quaerentibus me; palamapparui his, qui me non interrogabant ”.
20 And Isaiah is even bold enough to say: I have let myself be found by those who did not seek me; Ihave let myself be seen by those who did not consult me;
21 and referring to Israel, he says: Al day long I have been stretching out my hands to a disobedientand rebel ious people.
